The boundary Riemann solver coming from the real vanishing viscosity approximation
We study a family of initial boundary value problems associated to mixed
hyperbolic-parabolic systems:

The most interesting points are the following two.
First, the boundary characteristic case is considered, i.e. one eigenvalue of
can be .
Second, we take into account the possibility that is not invertible. To
deal with this case, we take as hypotheses conditions that were introduced by
Kawashima and Shizuta relying on physically meaningful examples. We also
introduce a new condition of block linear degeneracy. We prove that, if it is

Ages and Metallicities of Young Globular Clusters in the Merger Remnant NGC 7252
UV-to-visual spectra of eight young star clusters in the merger remnant and
protoelliptical galaxy NGC 7252, obtained with the Blanco 4-m telescope on
Cerro Tololo, are presented. These clusters lie at projected distances of 3-15
kpc from the center and move with a velocity dispersion of 140+/-35 km/s in the
line of sight. Seven of the clusters show strong Balmer absorption lines in
their spectra [EW(H-beta)= 6-13 Angstrom], while the eighth lies in a giant HII
region and shows no detectable absorption features.
Based on comparisons with model-cluster spectra by Bruzual & Charlot (1996)
and Bressan, Chiosi, & Tantalo (1996), six of the absorption-line clusters have
ages in the range of 400-600 Myr, indicating that they formed early on during
the recent merger. These clusters are globular clusters as judged by their
small effective radii and ages corresponding to ~100 core crossing times. The
one emission-line object is <10 Myr old and may be a nascent globular cluster
or an OB association.
The mean metallicities measured for three clusters are solar to within
+/-0.15 dex, suggesting that the merger of two likely Sc galaxies in NGC 7252
formed a globular-cluster system with a bimodal metallicity distribution. Since
NGC 7252 itself shows the characteristics of a 0.5-1 Gyr old protoelliptical,
its second-generation solar-metallicity globulars provide direct evidence that
giant ellipticals with bimodal globular-cluster systems can form through major

Acquisition efficiency of Flavescence dorée phytoplasma by Scaphoideus titanus Ball from infected tolerant or susceptible grapevine cultivars or experimental host plants
The rate of Flavescence dorée phytoplasma (FDP) acquisition by the leafhopper vector Scaphoideus titanus Ball was tested under field and glass house conditions confining healthy reared nymphs on canes of FDP-infected grapevines or on FDP-infected cuttings collected in the field during the dormant season. Acquisition tests were performed using FD-tolerant (Merlot) or highly susceptible (Pinot blanc) grapevine cultivars, or alternatively using experimentally infected broadbean plants. Frequency of FDP acquisition by leafhoppers was evaluated using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Different batches of insects were confined on the same infected source plants in the vineyard for acquisition access periods (AAP) of 7 d at a time at intervals of 15-20 d during spring and summer. When diseased Pinot blanc grapevines were used as source plants, acquisition by leafhoppers and transmission to healthy grapevines increased over summer, while almost no acquisition or transmission was observed when diseased Merlot grapevines were used as source plants. Tests conducted under controlled conditions confirmed that Merlot is a poorer source of FDP than Pinot blanc; the optimum FDP source for S. titanus was broadbean although this plant is not a natural host of the leafhopper. It is assumed that grapevine cultivars play an important role in influencing the proportion of FDP-infected leafhoppers in the vineyards and therefore influencing the rate of disease progress.
Development and applications of the Gas Electron Multiplier
The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) has been recently developed to cope with the severe requirements of high luminosity particle physics experimentation. With excellent position accuracy and very high rate capability, GEM devices are robust and easy to manufacture. The possibility of cascading two or more multipliers permits to achieve larger gains and more stable operation. We discuss major performances of the new detectors, particularly in view of possible use for high rate portal imaging and medical diagnostics
Rehabilitation strategies for low anterior resection syndrome. A systematic review
OBJECTIVE: To summarize the evidence in the literature about rehabilitative treatments that reduce low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) symptoms in patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer. METHODS: We have search in PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health and Scopus databases. Studies selected were limited to those including only patient undergone low rectal resection with sphincter preservation and with pre-post assessment with a LARS score. Five articles fit the criteria. RESULTS: The percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation demonstrated moderate results and sacral nerve stimulation was found to be the best treatment with greater symptom improvement. Only one study considered sexual and urinary problems in the outcomes assessment. CONCLUSIONS: In clinical practice patients should evaluate with the LARS and other score for evaluation of urinary and sexual problems. Future research must be implemented with higher quality studies to identify the least invasive and most effective treatment/s
The Distribution of Nearby Stars in Velocity Space Inferred from Hipparcos Data
(abridged) The velocity distribution f(v) of nearby stars is estimated, via a
maximum- likelihood algorithm, from the positions and tangential velocities of
a kinematically unbiased sample of 14369 stars observed by the HIPPARCOS
satellite. f(v) shows rich structure in the radial and azimuthal motions, v_R
and v_phi, but not in the vertical velocity, v_z: there are four prominent and
many smaller maxima, many of which correspond to well known moving groups.
While samples of early-type stars are dominated by these maxima, also up to 25%
of red main-sequence stars are associated with them. These moving groups are
responsible for the vertex deviation measured even for samples of late-type
stars; they appear more frequently for ever redder samples; and as a whole they
follow an asymmetric-drift relation, in the sense that those only present in
red samples predominantly have large |v_R| and lag in v_phi w.r.t. the local
standard of rest (LSR). The question arise, how these old moving groups got on
their eccentric orbits. A plausible mechanism, known from solar system
dynamics, which is able to manage a shift in orbit space involves locking into
an orbital resonance.
Apart from these moving groups, there is a smooth background distribution,
akin to Schwarzschild's ellipsoidal model, with axis ratio of about 1:0.6:0.35
in v_R, v_phi, and v_z. The contours are aligned with the direction, but
not w.r.t. the v_phi and v_z axes: the mean v_z increases for stars rotating
faster than the LSR. This effect can be explained by the stellar warp of the
Galactic disk. If this explanation is correct, the warp's inner edge must not
be within the solar circle, while its pattern rotates with frequency of about

The construction and performance of large size GEM~detectors for the COMPASS~experiment is described. Based on the experience gained during the operation of these detectors in high rate muon, proton, and pion beams we discuss the suitability of their use in harsh radiation environments
Laryngectomized patients caregivers' life experience: A phenomenological study
Background: Laryngectomized patients often depend on their caregivers who have a central and difficult role in supporting them dealing with financial, social, and relational issues. In fact, they feel very responsible and committed, especially considering the time devoted to take care of their beloved. Besides, providing care induces caregivers high stress levels, emotional distress, anxiety and the fear of cancer recurrence or progress. Few studies investigated laryngectomized patients caregivers\u2019 life experience during both the whole course of illness and at the end of the treatment. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to explore, through a phenomenological approach, the lived-experience of primary family caregivers of laryngectomized patients undergoing radical surgery. Methods: Qualitative semi-structured and audiotaped interviews were held with 12 laryngectomized patients\u2019 primary family caregivers. Data were analysed using the descriptive phenomenological approach outlined by Colaizzi. Results: Three key themes emerged: the caregivers lived experience of illness; the change of caregivers\u2019 daily life and how they support their sick beloved. The experience of caregivers\u2019 lived relations changes from being a family member to a supportive carer, and the illness of their beloved negatively affects their psychological lived experience. Their perception of time and Quality of Life change as their perception of the future becomes uncertain. Finally, they feel guilty mainly because of the limited amount of time they can devote to their beloved. Conclusions: The study findings allowed to understand in depth how the presence of a laryngectomized person in the family may affect the life of the caregiver, even after the treatment phase. This suggests the need for healthcare professionals to support caregivers throughout the whole care journey and especially in dealing with the perception of time during the diagnosis and care phases. Further research should be conducted on factors contributing to time perception alteration and possible interventions to support caregivers to cope with it
The Stellar Population of the M31 Spiral Arm Around OB Association A24
A study of the stellar population of the M31 spiral arm around OB association
A24 was carried out based on the photometric data obtained from deep V and JHK
imaging. The luminosity function was obtained for -7 <~ Mbol <~ -3.5 by
applying the extinction correction corresponding to Av=1 and the bolometric
correction BC(K) as an empirical function of (J-K)o. In comparing the observed
color-luminosity diagrams with semitheoretical isochrones modified for the
dust-shell effects, we found the young population of t <~ 30 Myr with
supergiants of Mbol <~ -5, the bulk of the intermediate-age population of t ~
0.2 - 2.5 Gyr with bright asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars of -5 <~ Mbol <~
-4, and old populations of t ~> 3 Gyr with AGB and red giant branch (RGB) stars
of Mbol ~> -4. The average star formation rate was estimated to be ~1.8x10^4
M_o/Myr and ~0.7x10^4 M_o/Myr per deprojected disk area of 1 kpc^2 from the
number density of B0 V stars around Mv=-4.0 (age ~10 Myr) and the number
density of bright AGB stars around Mbol = -4.3 (age ~1 Gyr), respectively. A
study of the local variation in the V and the J and H luminosity functions
revealed a kind of anticorrelation between the population of the young
component and that of the intermediate-age component when subdomains of ~100 pc
scales were concerned. This finding suggests that the disk domain around the
A24 area experienced a series of star formation episodes alternatively among
different subdomains with a timescale of a few spiral passage periods. Brief
discussions are given about the interstellar extinction and about the lifetimes

Cepheid Mass-loss and the Pulsation -- Evolutionary Mass Discrepancy
I investigate the discrepancy between the evolution and pulsation masses for
Cepheid variables. A number of recent works have proposed that non-canonical
mass-loss can account for the mass discrepancy. This mass-loss would be such
that a 5Mo star loses approximately 20% of its mass by arriving at the Cepheid
instability strip; a 14Mo star, none. Such findings would pose a serious
challenge to our understanding of mass-loss. I revisit these results in light
of the Padova stellar evolutionary models and find evolutionary masses are
()% greater than pulsation masses for Cepheids between 5<M/Mo<14. I
find that mild internal mixing in the main-sequence progenitor of the Cepheid
