    Evidence-Based or Just Good for the Soul? Examining the Efficacy of Peer Tutoring in College

    As peer tutoring programs have become pervasive on college campuses, it has become common to hear their benefits extolled. The goal of this paper is to examine the literature to determine in what ways accessing peer tutoring may impact college students. Specifically, the dual lenses of cognitive development and the generation and conversion of academic and social capital are employed to limit the scope of the research and focus the analysis. Conclusions include that while “peer tutoring” lacks a commonly accepted definition, students may receive intellectual benefits and their social networks may be broadened when accessing services that are intentionally structured. These ideas are connected to institutional mission statements and stated goals

    SOCIAL LEARNING IN THE CO-CURRICULUM: EXPLORING GROUP PEER TUTORING IN COLLEGE

    In a time of upheaval in American higher education, student retention continues to be a chief concern on most campuses. Peer tutoring, like other peer-based programming, is asked to serve multiple functions as a low-cost, high-impact model. This study explored the cultures of these semi-structured, co-curricular, academic-social spaces and sought to understand what happens in a group peer tutoring context that impacts students. Data was generated with students on two campuses during the spring 2014 semester using a two-phase qualitative approach. Data generating activities included observation of students and peer tutors in the tutoring spaces on each campus. The second phase of data generation included focus groups with more than 30 students on each campus. Findings suggest that the student participants on these two campuses conceive of tutoring spaces as unique, that they engage with their peers in such contexts differently than they do in other places, and that programmatic structures may influence the outcomes they achieve. Implications range from contributions to more nuanced understanding of social learning theory to the critical importance of vulnerability in student help-seeking behavior

    An ecological study of regional variation in work injuries among young workers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The investigation of geographic variation in occupational injuries has received little attention. Young workers 15 to 24 years are of particular concern because they consistently show elevated occupational injury rates compared to older workers. The present study sought to: (a) to describe the geographic variation of work injuries; (b) to determine whether geographic variation remained after controlling for relevant demographic and job characteristics; (c) to identify the region-level factors that correlate with the geographic variation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using workers compensation claims and census data, we estimated claim rates per 100 full-time equivalents for 15 to 24 year olds in 46 regions in Ontario. A total of 21 region-level indicators were derived primarily from Census and Labour Force Survey data to reflect social and material deprivation of the region as well as demographic and employment characteristics of youth living in those areas.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Descriptive findings showed substantial geographic variation in young worker injury rates, even after controlling for several job and demographic variables. Region-level characteristics such as greater residential stability were associated with low work injury rates. Also, regions with the lowest claim rates tended to have proportionally fewer cuts and burns than high-claim-rate regions.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The finding of substantial geographic variation in youth claim rates even after controlling for demographic and job factors can aid in targeting prevention resource. The association between region-level indicators such as residential stability and youth work injury suggests that work injury prevention strategies can be integrated with other local economic development measures. The findings partially support the notion that work safety measures may be unevenly distributed with respect to regional socio-economic factors.</p

    4.48-GHz fractional- N frequency synthesizer with spurious-tone suppression via probability mass redistribution

    A 4.48-GHz type-II charge pump fractional-N PLL implemented in a 0.18-ÎĽm BiCMOS process is presented. The divider controller's output is processed using a novel block, the probability mass redistributor, which statistically reconfigures the modulation noise such that fractional spurs are minimized. Measurements demonstrate in-band fractional spurs of -80 dBc. The solution, which is a drop-in modification of a conventional MASH structure, incurs a modulator area increase of 22%, and can be used in conjunction with other linearization strategies

    Retrospectively Estimating Energy Intake and Misreporting From a Qualitative Food Frequency Questionnaire: An Example Using Australian Cohort and National Survey Data

    Qualitative food frequency questionnaires (Q-FFQ) omit portion size information from dietary assessment. This restricts researchers to consumption frequency data, limiting investigations of dietary composition (i.e., energy-adjusted intakes) and misreporting. To support such researchers, we provide an instructive example of Q-FFQ energy intake estimation that derives typical portion size information from a reference survey population and evaluates misreporting. A sample of 1,919 Childhood Determinants of Adult Health Study (CDAH) participants aged 26-36 years completed a 127-item Q-FFQ. We assumed sex-specific portion sizes for Q-FFQ items using 24-h dietary recall data from the 2011-2012 Australian National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) and compiled energy density values primarily using the Australian Food Composition Database. Total energy intake estimation was daily equivalent frequency x portion size (g) x energy density (kJ/g) for each Q-FFQ item, summed. We benchmarked energy intake estimates against a weighted sample of age-matched NNPAS respondents (n = 1,383). Median (interquartile range) energy intake was 9,400 (7,580-11,969) kJ/day in CDAH and 9,055 (6,916-11,825) kJ/day in weighted NNPAS. Median energy intake to basal metabolic rate ratios were 1.43 (1.15-1.78) in CDAH and 1.35 (1.03-1.74) in weighted NNPAS, indicating notable underreporting in both samples, with increased levels of underreporting among the overweight and obese. Using the Goldberg and predicted total energy expenditure methods for classifying misreporting, 65 and 41% of CDAH participants had acceptable/plausible energy intake estimates, respectively. Excluding suspected CDAH misreporters improved the plausibility of energy intake estimates, concordant with expected body weight associations. This process can assist researchers wanting an estimate of energy intake from a Q-FFQ and to evaluate misreporting, broadening the scope of diet-disease investigations that depend on consumption frequency data

    Wandering spur suppression in a 4.9-GHz fractional-N frequency synthesizer

    Fractional-N frequency synthesizers that use a digital Δ-Σ modulator (DDSM) to control the feedback divider can exhibit spurious tones that move about in the frequency domain; these are known colloquially as ``walking'' or wandering spurs. Building upon a theoretical explanation of the origin of wandering spurs, this article presents two methods to suppress them. It describes a 4.9-GHz 180-nm SiGe BiCMOS charge-pump phase-locked loop (CP-PLL) fractional-N frequency synthesizer platform with a divider controller that can function as: 1) a standard MASH 1-1-1; 2) a MASH 1-1-1 with high-amplitude dither; and 3) a MASH 1-1-1 with a modified third stage.
