Towards simultaneous meta-modeling for both the output and input spaces in the context of design shape optimization using asynchronous high-performance computing

ECCOMAS PhD Olympiads 2013International audience. In this paper, we propose a simultaneous meta-modeling protocol for both input and output spaces. We perform a reparametrization of the input space using constrained shape interpolation by introducing the concept of an α-manifold of admissible meshed shapes. The output space is reduced using constrained Proper Orthogonal Decomposition. By simultaneously using meta-modeling for both spaces, we facilitate interactive design space exploration for the purpose of design. The proposed approach is applied to several industrial problems

Intrinsic dimensionality detection criterion based on Locally Linear Embedding

We revisit in this work the Locally Linear Embedding (LLE) algorithm which is a widely employed technique in dimensionality reduction. With a particular interest on the correspondences of nearest neighbors in the original and em- bedded spaces, we observe that, when prescribing low-dimensional embedding spaces, LLE remains merely a weight preserving, rather than a neighborhood preserving algorithm. We propose thus a ”neighborhood preserving ratio” crite- rion to estimate a minimal intrinsic dimensionality required for neighbourhood preservation. We validate its efficiency on a set of synthetic data, including S-curve, swiss roll, as well as a dataset of grayscale images

A parallel algorithm of ICSYM for complex symmetric linear systems in quantum chemistry

    Get PDF
Computational effort is a common issue for solving large-scale complex symmetric linear systems, particularly in quantum chemistry applications. In order to alleviate this problem, we propose a parallel algorithm of improved conjugate gradient-type iterative (CSYM). Using three-term recurrence relation and orthogonal properties of residual vectors to replace the tridiagonalization process of classical CSYM, which allows to decrease the degree of the reduce-operator from two to one communication at each iteration and to reduce the amount of vector updates and vector multiplications. Several numerical examples are implemented to show that high performance of proposed improved version is obtained both in convergent rate and in parallel efficiency

Investigation of parameter-dependent material characteristics of additively manufactured specimens for data-driven part optimization

    Get PDF
Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is a complex production process including hosts of parameters and a multitude of physical phenomena, which make the simulation and modeling quite challenging. This work investigates the impact of modified printing parameters (e.g., hatch distance, laser power) on correlating material properties (e.g., Young's modulus, temperature gradient) of hardened aluminum specimens. The ultimate goal is to create a data model that enables data-driven and multi-physical optimization of mechanical components fabricated via DMLS

Automated identification of defect morphology and spatial distribution in woven composites

ABSTRACT: The performance of heterogeneous materials, for example, woven composites, does not always reach the predicted theoretical potential. This is caused by defects, such as residual voids introduced during the manufacturing process. A machine learning-based methodology is proposed to determine the morphology and spatial distribution of defects in composites based on X-ray microtomographic scans of the microstructure. A concept of defect "genome" is introduced as an indicator of the overall state of defects in the material, enabling a quick comparison of specimens manufactured under different conditions. The approach is illustrated for thermoplastic composites with unidirectional banana fiber reinforcement

Clinical Sequencing Exploratory Research Consortium: Accelerating Evidence-Based Practice of Genomic Medicine

    Get PDF
Despite rapid technical progress and demonstrable effectiveness for some types of diagnosis and therapy, much remains to be learned about clinical genome and exome sequencing (CGES) and its role within the practice of medicine. The Clinical Sequencing Exploratory Research (CSER) consortium includes 18 extramural research projects, one National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) intramural project, and a coordinating center funded by the NHGRI and National Cancer Institute. The consortium is exploring analytic and clinical validity and utility, as well as the ethical, legal, and social implications of sequencing via multidisciplinary approaches; it has thus far recruited 5,577 participants across a spectrum of symptomatic and healthy children and adults by utilizing both germline and cancer sequencing. The CSER consortium is analyzing data and creating publically available procedures and tools related to participant preferences and consent, variant classification, disclosure and management of primary and secondary findings, health outcomes, and integration with electronic health records. Future research directions will refine measures of clinical utility of CGES in both germline and somatic testing, evaluate the use of CGES for screening in healthy individuals, explore the penetrance of pathogenic variants through extensive phenotyping, reduce discordances in public databases of genes and variants, examine social and ethnic disparities in the provision of genomics services, explore regulatory issues, and estimate the value and downstream costs of sequencing. The CSER consortium has established a shared community of research sites by using diverse approaches to pursue the evidence-based development of best practices in genomic medicine
