Contribute a Verse

In response to the Affordable Learning Georgia initiative, Dr. Tanya Bennett and ten colleagues from the University of North Georgia have written Contribute a Verse: A Guide to First Year Composition. The South Korean Kwangju Uprising Of 1980: Through The Eyes Of The American Media

This thesis reviews the history of the American-Korean relationship from the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War through the rise of Chun Doo-hwan. Special emphasis is placed on the Kwangju Uprising as a watershed moment in American-Korean relations. While a great deal has already been written on the American government’s response to Kwangju, little is available on the general American public\u27s response. Though this thesis does not claim to answer this very general question, it does examine public news coverage of major media sources in the United States, including newspapers such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times, as well as weekly news magazines such as Time and Newsweek. Mind over media: Conscious and unconscious responses to media messages

Advisor: Professor Dan Sullivan. 1 computer file (PDF); iii, 112 pages.Human response to media images is a product of both conscious and preconscious processing, involving structural mechanisms within the brain as well as individual self-concepts, issues of identity, ideological beliefs, and relevance. Visual and auditory processing incorporates both conscious and preconscious mechanisms, which influence reception and integration of incoming data. Depending upon the goals or physiological cues relevant to the subject, specific data are absorbed from the media and passed on to the higher cognitive functions in the brain. Once in the conscious mind, attitudes from the conscious and unconscious may further filter incoming data. The remaining concepts and information are used as a platform for action and response in social situations. The resulting ideological platform also informs the pre-conscious mechanisms, creating a constantly evolving cycle of relevant information filtering. Recommendations are provided for a methodological approach to media research that incorporates cognitive function, identity, and ideological platforms. Interkulturellt arbetssätt? : Hur arbetar förberedelseklass- & modersmålslärare med andraspråkselever samt hur förhåller de sig till ett språkligt och matematiskt bemötande i undervisningen?

The purpose with this essay is to analyze teachers (in mother language and preparatory classes) perspective and see how they choose to work with different tools, and at the same time see how the teachers approach the pupils from an intercultural, mathematical and linguistical perspective. We also want to observe if there are any similarities and/or differences between the teachers in how they choose to work with the pupils with second language in the classroom. Our keywords are intercultural approach, mathematical treatment and linguistical treatment. We study the working methods and tactics practiced by the teachers, which we find relevant to use in this essay. To get a wider perspective we decided to observe two different schools in different districts. We use a qualitative method as the basis in our research which provides a deeper view of the school environment. Result: This essay shows that the teachers have similarities in their approach to students which contains an intercultural perspective. It was also shown in different ways in both schools how the teachers approached the pupils on the subjects of mathematic and linguistic. Regarding cooperation with teachers of mother language it is said to play a crucial role in how pupils with second language will develop their understanding and vocabulary.

Stabilität und Effizienz des deutschen Bankensektors im Lichte der Subprime-Krise

In autumn 2008 a swift worldwide political response was called for to avert the imminent collapse of the global financial system. Besides these immediate measures, to which there was no alternative, the financial sector needs to be reformed in the medium to long term. Improved stability will help to mitigate the harmful impact of future crises and reduce the frequency of severe financial market turmoil. The optimal combination of financial-sector stability and productivity is currently being impeded by avoidable structural inefficiencies and what is in some cases a misguided institutional and regulatory framework. Some of the reform measures under discussion unnecessarily restrict productivity again. The efforts that are undisputedly required to strengthen stability should go hand in hand with steps to enhance financial-sector efficiency. This is the only way to improve the performance of the banking sector and sustainably ensure growth funding and employment in Germany. Im Herbst 2008 war weltweit ein schnelles Handeln der Politik erforderlich, um den drohenden Kollaps des globalen Finanzsystems abzuwenden. Neben diesen alternativlosen Sofortmaßnahmen muss in der mittleren bis langen Frist der Finanzsektor reformiert werden. Eine verbesserte Stabilität soll zukünftige Krisen in ihrer schädlichen Wirkung abschwächen und die Häufigkeit von extremen Finanzmarktturbulenzen verringern. Die optimale Kombination von Stabilität und volkswirtschaftlicher Leistungsfähigkeit des Finanzsektors wird zurzeit durch vermeidbare strukturelle Ineffizienzen und falsche ordnungspolitische Rahmenbedingungen erschwert. Die diskutierten Reformmaßnahmen schränken zum Teil die Leistungsfähigkeit erneut unnötig ein. Eine unzweifelhaft notwendige Stärkung der Stabilität sollte aber mit einer verbesserten Effizienz des Finanzsektors verbunden werden. Nur so kann die Leistungsfähigkeit des Bankensektors gestärkt und die Finanzierung von Wachstum und Beschäftigung in Deutschland dauerhaft gesichert werden.Financial crises, banking sector stability, banking sector efficiency
