A Case of Late-Onset Gemcitabine Lung Toxicity

Gemcitabine is a chemotherapeutic agent used for the treatment of a number of malignancies. Although its major dose-limiting side effect is myelosuppression, many pulmonary toxicities have been described with its use. Severe pulmonary toxicity is rare, but symptoms tend to be rapid in onset and potentially deadly. The average time from initiation of chemotherapy to onset of symptoms is less than two months. The most effective therapy is steroid administration, the efficacy of which has been variable. In this report, we describe a unique case of gemcitabine pulmonary toxicity in a patient who did not experience symptoms of pulmonary dysfunction until after 1 year of treatment. Her symptoms did not improve rapidly with steroids, nor did she rapidly decompensate as has been frequently described. To our knowledge, this is one of the first reported descriptions of late-onset gemcitabine lung toxicity

Let’s Get in Touch - Decision Making about Enterprise Architecture Using 3D Visualization in Augmented Reality

    Get PDF
Making informed decisions about historically grown and often complex business and Information Technology (IT) landscapes can be particularly difficult. Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) addresses this issue by enabling stakeholders to base their decisions on relevant information about the organization’s current and future Enterprise Architectures (EAs). However, visualization of EA is often confronted with low usefulness perceptions. Informed by the cognitive fit theory (CFT), we argue that decision-makers benefit from interacting with EA visualizations using Augmented Reality (AR), because it enables a consistent task-related mental representation based on the natural use of decision-makers’ visual-spatial abilities. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate ARs suitability for EA-related decision-making. We follow the design science research (DSR) approach to develop and evaluate an AR head-mounted display (HMD) prototype, using the Microsoft HoloLens. Our results suggest that EA-related decision-making can profit from applying AR, but users find the handling of the HMD device cumbersome

Gemcitabine, cisplatin and methylprednisolone (GEM-P) is an effective salvage regimen in patients with relapsed and refractory lymphoma

There is currently no standard salvage chemotherapy regimen in relapsed and refractory lymphoma. Gemcitabine is a novel nucleoside analogue, which acts synergistically with cisplatin both in vitro and in clinical studies. We evaluated the combination of gemcitabine, cisplatin and methylprednisolone (GEM-P) in 41 heavily pretreated patients with relapsed and refractory Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The best-achieved response rate (RR) was 79% (95% CI 64–91), with a complete RR of 21%. In patients with chemo-resistant disease, the RR was 63%. Myelosuppression was the main toxicity, the incidence of Grade 3 or 4 anaemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia was 17.1, 61.0 and 53.7% respectively. Only one patient had neutropenic sepsis and none of the patients suffered from haemorrhage. Grade 3 or 4 nonhaematological toxicity was minimal and stem cell mobilisation was not inhibited. GEM-P is an effective salvage regimen and its use prior to autologous stem cell transplant warrants further investigation

APICES - Rapid Application Development with Graph Pattern

    No full text
In this paper, we present the novel software design environment APICES. It is specifically tailored to support rapid application development based on network like data structures which are typical for CAD tools, system level design tools or DSP applications. APICES is based on graph patterns. These graph patterns offer high-level functionality far beyond manipulation of simple graphs consisting of nodes and edges. By making graph patterns re-usable within an object-oriented framework architecture and by offering multi-target code generators we are able to provide a powerful environment for prototyping and rapid development of graph-based applications. We demonstrate the productivity gains and the benefits of APICES by rapid application development of a multi-rate digital signal processing tool. 1. Introduction Re-use of software artifacts plays a central role to shorten software development cycles in order to minimize time-to-market. Recent work on design patterns [1][2] and object-o..

    Robot behavior engineering using DD-designer

We present a novel robotic software development framework for rapid simulation and programming of mobile robot teams. The framework uses a specification- centred generative approach. A robot control program is specified in an intuitive graphical representation of a hyper-graph of typed data processing elements. This specification is automatically refined to all design artifacts required in a robotic software development environment: simulation models, robot control programs, team communication infrastructure, documentation, and real-time monitoring. Although our framework was originally intended to design behavior-based robot control programs using the Dual Dynamics architecture, we demonstrate the flexibility of the environment by an example which integrates a "classical" control schema into a Dual Dynamics behavior system. Experimental validation was done on GMD-Robots, our team of mid-size league RoboCup robots
