    Corrections to Scaling in the Phase-Ordering Dynamics of a Vector Order Parameter

    Corrections to scaling, associated with deviations of the order parameter from the scaling morphology in the initial state, are studied for systems with O(n) symmetry at zero temperature in phase-ordering kinetics. Including corrections to scaling, the equal-time pair correlation function has the form C(r,t) = f_0(r/L) + L^{-omega} f_1(r/L) + ..., where L is the coarsening length scale. The correction-to-scaling exponent, omega, and the correction-to-scaling function, f_1(x), are calculated for both nonconserved and conserved order parameter systems using the approximate Gaussian closure theory of Mazenko. In general, omega is a non-trivial exponent which depends on both the dimensionality, d, of the system and the number of components, n, of the order parameter. Corrections to scaling are also calculated for the nonconserved 1-d XY model, where an exact solution is possible.Comment: REVTeX, 20 pages, 2 figure

    Dynamical properties of the hypercell spin glass model

    The spreading of damage technique is used to study the sensibility to initial conditions in a heath bath Monte Carlo simulation of the spin glass hypercubic cell model. Since the hypercubic cell in dimension 2D and the hypercubic lattice in dimension D resemble each other closely at finite dimensions and both converge to mean field when dimension goes to infinity, it allows us to study the effect of dimensionality on the dynamical behavior of spin glasses.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, 8 ps figure

    Phase Ordering Dynamics of the O(n) Model - Exact Predictions and Numerical Results

    We consider the pair correlation functions of both the order parameter field and its square for phase ordering in the O(n)O(n) model with nonconserved order parameter, in spatial dimension 2≤d≤32\le d\le 3 and spin dimension 1≤n≤d1\le n\le d. We calculate, in the scaling limit, the exact short-distance singularities of these correlation functions and compare these predictions to numerical simulations.     Automation of Vapor-Diffusion Growth of Protein Crystals

    Some improvements have been made in a system of laboratory equipment developed previously for studying the crystallization of proteins from solution by use of dynamically controlled flows of dry gas. The improvements involve mainly (1) automation of dispensing of liquids for starting experiments, (2) automatic control of drying of protein solutions during the experiments, and (3) provision for automated acquisition of video images for monitoring experiments in progress and for post-experiment analysis. The automation of dispensing of liquids was effected by adding an automated liquid-handling robot that can aspirate source solutions and dispense them in either a hanging-drop or a sitting-drop configuration, whichever is specified, in each of 48 experiment chambers. A video camera of approximately the size and shape of a lipstick dispenser was added to a mobile stage that is part of the robot, in order to enable automated acquisition of images in each experiment chamber. The experiment chambers were redesigned to enable the use of sitting drops, enable backlighting of each specimen, and facilitate automation

    Self Consistent Screening Approximation For Critical Dynamics

    We generalise Bray's self-consistent screening approximation to describe the critical dynamics of the ϕ4\phi^4 theory. In order to obtain the dynamical exponent zz, we have to make an ansatz for the form of the scaling functions, which fortunately can be much constrained by general arguments. Numerical values of zz for d=3d=3, and n=1,...,10n=1,...,10 are obtained using two different ans\"atze, and differ by a very small amount. In particular, the value of z≃2.115z \simeq 2.115 obtained for the 3-d Ising model agrees well with recent Monte-Carlo simulations.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX file + 4 (EPS) figure

    Modified Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass: Numerical solutions

    For large but finite systems the static properties of the infinite ranged Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model are numerically investigated in the entire the glass regime. The approach is based on the modified Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations in combination with a phenomenological relaxational dynamics used as a numerical tool. For all temperatures and all bond configurations stable and meta stable states are found. Following a discussion of the finite size effects, the static properties of the state of lowest free energy are presented in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field for all temperatures below the spin glass temperature. Moreover some characteristic features of the meta stable states are presented. These states exist in finite temperature intervals and disappear via local saddle node bifurcations. Numerical evidence is found that the excess free energy of the meta stable states remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. This implies a the `multi-valley' structure of the free energy on a sub-extensive scale.Comment: Revtex 10 pages 13 figures included, submitted to Phys.Rev.B.     Aging in the glass phase of a 2D random periodic elastic system

    Using RG we investigate the non-equilibrium relaxation of the (Cardy-Ostlund) 2D random Sine-Gordon model, which describes pinned arrays of lines. Its statics exhibits a marginal (θ=0\theta=0) glass phase for T<TgT<T_g described by a line of fixed points. We obtain the universal scaling functions for two-time dynamical response and correlations near TgT_g for various initial conditions, as well as the autocorrelation exponent. The fluctuation dissipation ratio is found to be non-trivial and continuously dependent on TT.Comment: 5 pages, RevTex, Modified Versio
