The catalogue of the discrete sources in the declination range from -13 deg to -2 deg

The results of the discrete source measurements with declinations -13 deg or = delta or = -2 deg and right ascensions 0 sub h + 24 sub h are given and were obtained as part of the systematic decametric survey of the celestial sphere with the rotatiotelecope UTR-2. Three hundred sixteen sources were found in the given declination range, four of which were observed for the first time. The source coordinates measured in the survey were compared with those from the 4th Cambridge survey at 178 MHz and the Parkes survey at 408 MHz

    Collaborative working: who is responsible?

As delivery of healthcare becomes more complex, there is an increasing need for collaborative working between specialty teams. Recognition of this need has led to new models of care, for example surgeons, anaesthetists and geriatricians working together in the perioperative pathway. Although there is emerging evidence that these collaborative approaches are effective, there is little guidance on who is responsible for the patient throughout the healthcare episode. Government policy and legislation has increasingly focused on the need for a single named clinician to be responsible for the entirety of a patient’s episode of care, with overall liability resting with the hospital trust as the provider organisation. This discrepancy between delivery of healthcare by teams and responsibility resting with an individual raises questions: how can clinicians and hospital trusts ensure synergistic patient care while maintaining clear lines of responsibility? Who should provide information to patients throughout the pathway? Who should the patient expect to be the point of contact? This dichotomy emphasises the need for new guidance to support the patient, the clinician and the provider organisation as shared models of care evolve and become embedded into routine practice

organic selenium compounds as potential chemotherapeutic agents for improved cancer treatment

Abstract Selenium(Se)-containing compounds have attracted a growing interest as anticancer agents over recent decades, with mounting reports demonstrating their high efficacy and selectivity against cancer cells. Typically, Se compounds exert their cytotoxic effects by acting as pro-oxidants that alter cellular redox homeostasis. However, the precise intracellular targets, signalling pathways affected and mechanisms of cell death engaged following treatment vary with the chemical properties of the selenocompound and its metabolites, as well as the cancer model that is used. Naturally occurring organic Se compounds, besides encompassing a significant antitumor activity with an apparent ability to prevent metastasis, also seem to have fewer side effects and less systemic effects as reported for many inorganic Se compounds. On this basis, many novel organoselenium compounds have also been synthesized and examined as potential chemotherapeutic agents. This review aims to summarize the most well studied natural and synthetic organoselenium compounds and provide the most recent developments in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie their potential anticancer effects

Prevention of Pyelonephritis Due to Escherichia coli in Rats with Gentamicin Stored in Kidney Tissue

Although gentamicin is known to accumulate and persist in the kidneys after sys-temic administration, its antibacterial activity at this site has not been determined. In the present study the accumulation of gentamicin in rat kidneys before infection prevented obstructive pyelonephritis due to Escherichia coli despite heavy urinary tract infection in the obstructed pelvis; thus the kidneys were protected against in-fection in the absence of effective levels of gentamicin in the urine. Stored gentamicin also protected pyelonephritic rats from relapse after complete obstruction of the kidneys. The level of antimicrobial activity of gentamicin in whole kidney tissue was 95 % less than that anticipated on the basis of levels measured after dilution of kidney tissue homogenates; this low level of activity apparently was due in part to high concentrations of solutes. In view of these results in rats, the possibility must be considered that despite reduced activity, gentamicin storage might be useful in the prophylaxis of kidney infection in patients with abnormalities of the urinary tract. In the treatment of established kidney infection, the dose of gentamicin could be reduced and the interval of its administration increased for minimal toxicity

RC J1148+0455 identification: gravitational lens or group of galaxies ?

The structure of the radio source RC B1146+052 of the ``Cold'' catalogue is investigated by data of the MIT-GB-VLA survey at 4850 MHz. This source belongs to the steep spectrum radio sources subsample of the RC catalogue. Its spectral index is α\alpha = -1.04. The optical image of this source obtained with 6m telescope is analysed. The radio source center is situated in a group of 8 galaxies of about 24m^m in the R-filter. The possible explanations of the complex structure of radio components are considered.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, uses psfig.sty. This was the poster as presented on Gamow Memorial Internat.
