    X-ray emission from the field of the hyperluminous IRAS galaxy IRASF15307+3252

    We report on a 20-ks observation of the z = 0.93 hyperluminous galaxy IRAS F15307+3252 with the ROSAT HRI. No X-ray source is detected at the position of F15307+3252 at an upper limit of ∌4 × 10⁎³ erg s⁻Âč. This is less than 2 × 10⁻⁎ of the bolometric luminosity of the object, and indicates either that the nucleus emits an unusually small fraction of its total power in X-rays, or that little of the nuclear X-ray flux is scattered into our line of sight by electrons. The lack of an X-ray detection around F15307+3252 also rules out it being at the centre of a cluster, such as is observed for IRAS P09104+4109. A weak, possibly extended, X-ray source is detected 13 arcsec south of the galaxy, spatially coincident with a clump of faint objects visible in a Keck K_s-band image of the field. This may be the core of a cluster near the line of sight to F15307+3252

    A Detailed Far-Ultraviolet Spectral Atlas of O-Type Stars

    In this paper we present a spectral atlas covering the wavelength interval 930--1188A for O2--O9.5 stars using Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer archival data. The stars selected for the atlas were drawn from three populations: Galactic main sequence (class III-V) stars, supergiants, and main sequence stars in the Magellanic Clouds, which have low metallicities. For each of these stars we have prepared FITS files comprised of paris of merged spectra for user access via the Multi-Mission Archives at Space Telescope. We chose spectra from the first population with spectral types O4, O5, O6, O7, O8, and O9.5 and used them to compile tables and figures with identifications of all possible atmospheric and ISM lines in the region 949-1188A. Our identified line totals for these six representative spectra are 821 (500), 992 (663), 1077 (749), 1178 (847), 1359 (1001), and 1798 (1392) lines, respectively, where the numbers in parentheses are the totals of lines formed in the atmospheres, according to spectral synthesis models. The total number of unique atmospheric identifications for the six main sequence O star template spectra is 1792, whereas the number of atmospheric lines in common to these spectra is 300. The number of identified lines decreases toward earlier types (increasing effective temperature), the whlle percentages of "missed" features (lines not predicted from our spectral syntheses) drops from a high of 8% at type B0.2, from our recently published B star far-UV atlas, to 1--3% for type O spectra. The percentages of overpredicted lines are similar, despite their being much higher for B star spectra. We also discuss the statistics of line populations among the various elemental ionization states. Finally, as an aid to users we list those isolated lines that can be used to determine stellar temperatures and the presence of possible chemical anomalies.Comment: To appear in Astrophysical Journal Supplements: 18 pages, 6 tables, 4 figures.     Evaluation of photosensitive films for light measurements in the fruiting zone of grapevine canopies

    The potential influence of fruit exposure and canopy manipulations on grape berry composition is well recognized. However, a simple and low cost method for quantifying the amount of light reaching the fruiting zone is lacking. The objective of the present study was to test the application of a commercial system of photosensitive azo-dye coated plastic films for characterizing light conditions within grapevine canopies. The fading rates of three films of differing light sensitivity were initially monitored in a fully exposed position, and these all showed a linear or near linear relationship with radiation measured by an adjacent global solar radiation sensor. When mounted in the fruiting zone of a vertically trained cool climate 'Riesling' vineyard for two periods following early and late leaf removal treatments, the films were able to quantify the change in light exposure within the fruiting zone. Total radiation values calculated using an on-site calibration or manufacturerÂŽs equation were comparable. While some consideration is needed with regard to the choice of film sensitivity and positioning within the canopy, these initial evaluations suggest these light sensitive films can provide a simple and accurate method for characterizing light conditions and quantifying cumulative radiation within the fruiting zone

    Discovery of a z=4.93, X-ray selected quasar by the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChamP)

    We present X-ray and optical observations of CXOMP J213945.0-234655, a high redshift (z=4.93) quasar discovered through the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP). This object is the most distant X-ray selected quasar published, with an X-ray luminosity of L(X)=5.9x10^44 erg/s (measured in the 0.3-2.5 keV band and corrected for Galactic absorption). CXOMP J213945.0-234655 is a g' dropout object (>26.2), with r'=22.87 and i'=21.36. The rest-frame X-ray to optical flux ratio is similar to quasars at lower redshifts and slightly X-ray bright relative to z>4 optically-selected quasars observed with Chandra. The ChaMP is beginning to acquire significant numbers of high redshift quasars to investigate the unobscured X-ray luminosity function out to z~5.Comment: Published in ApJ Letters; 4 pages; 3 figures; http://hea-www.harvard.edu/CHAMP

    The Dynamical Cluster Approximation: Non-Local Dynamics of Correlated Electron Systems

    We recently introduced the dynamical cluster approximation(DCA), a new technique that includes short-ranged dynamical correlations in addition to the local dynamics of the dynamical mean field approximation while preserving causality. The technique is based on an iterative self-consistency scheme on a finite size periodic cluster. The dynamical mean field approximation (exact result) is obtained by taking the cluster to a single site (the thermodynamic limit). Here, we provide details of our method, explicitly show that it is causal, systematic, Ί\Phi-derivable, and that it becomes conserving as the cluster size increases. We demonstrate the DCA by applying it to a Quantum Monte Carlo and Exact Enumeration study of the two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model. The resulting spectral functions preserve causality, and the spectra and the CDW transition temperature converge quickly and systematically to the thermodynamic limit as the cluster size increases.Comment: 19 pages, 13 postscript figures, revte

    Composition and distribution of the peracarid crustacean fauna along a latitudinal transect off Victoria Land (Ross Sea, Antarctica) with special emphasis on the Cumacea

    The following study was the first to describe composition and structure of the peracarid fauna systematically along a latitudinal transect off Victoria Land (Ross Sea, Antarctica). During the 19th Antarctic expedition of the Italian research vessel “Italica” in February 2004, macrobenthic samples were collected by means of a Rauschert dredge with a mesh size of 500 m at depths between 85 and 515 m. The composition of peracarid crustaceans, especially Cumacea was investigated. Peracarida contributed 63% to the total abundance of the fauna. The peracarid samples were dominated by amphipods (66%), whereas cumaceans were represented with 7%. Previously, only 13 cumacean species were known, now the number of species recorded from the Ross Sea increased to 34. Thus, the cumacean fauna of the Ross Sea, which was regarded as the poorest in terms of species richness, has to be considered as equivalent to that of other high Antarctic areas. Most important cumacean families concerning abundance and species richness were Leuconidae, Nannastacidae, and Diastylidae. Cumacean diversity was lowest at the northernmost area (Cape Adare). At the area off Coulman Island, which is characterized by muddy sediment, diversity was highest. Diversity and species number were higher at the deeper stations and abundance increased with latitude. A review of the bathymetric distribution of the Cumacea from the Ross Sea reveals that most species distribute across the Antarctic continental shelf and slope. So far, only few deep-sea records justify the assumption of a shallow-water–deep-sea relationship in some species of Ross Sea Cumacea, which is discussed from an evolutionary point of view

    Computer users rarely experience entirely trouble-free interaction. The natural variety ofindividuals ensures that no software systems yield constantly fluent interaction for allusers. In consequence, software designers often strive to ameliorate this situation bybuilding 'user support' into their systems. User support can take different forms but,conventionally, each aims to assist the needy end-user by means of facilities directly supporting the performance of certain operations, or through supply of information thatadvises the user on available system functionality.The present paper briefly characterises a range of user support facilities before describingone requirement in greater detail. This aspect considers the needs of users whose mother-tongue is not English, but who are obliged to use English-based information systems. Inthis context, 'helping the user' must reasonably extend beyond mere advice on systemoperation to selective elucidation of information content. We regard this move as alogical extension of the user support concept, by seeking to address specific interactionneeds in a target user population. An example of this approach is described through aninformation system, in the domain of civil engineering, for native Chinese speakers ofEnglish
