Interplay between solid state microstructure and photophysics for poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) within oriented polyethylene hosts
We present a study of isotropic and uniaxially oriented binary blend films comprising ≤1 wt % of the conjugated polymer poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (PFO) dispersed in both ultra‐high molecular weight (UHMW) and linear‐low‐density (LLD) polyethylene (PE). Polarized absorption, fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction are used to characterize the samples before and after tensile deformation. Results show that blend films can be prepared with PFO chains adopting a combination of several distinct molecular conformations, namely glassy, crystalline, and the so‐called β‐phase, which directly influences the resulting optical properties. Both PFO concentration and drawing temperature strongly affect the alignment of PFO chains during the tensile drawing of the blend films. In both PE hosts, crystallization of PFO takes place during drawing; the resulting ordered chains show optimal optical anisotropy. Our results clarify the PFO microstructure in oriented blends with PE and the processing conditions required for achieving the maximal optical anisotropy.ISSN:0887-6266ISSN:0098-1273ISSN:1099-048
Origin of ferroelectricity in the multiferroic barium fluorides BaMF4
We present a first principles study of the series of multiferroic barium
fluorides with the composition BaMF4, where M is Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni. We discuss
trends in the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties, and we show that
the ferroelectricity in these systems results from the "freezing in" of a
single unstable polar phonon mode. In contrast to the case of the standard
perovskite ferroelectrics, this structural distortion is not accompanied by
charge transfer between cations and anions. Thus, the ferroelectric instability
in the multiferroic barium fluorides arises solely due to size effects and the
special geometrical constraints of the underlying crystal structure.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 3 table
Scintillation Pulse Shape Discrimination in a Two-Phase Xenon Time Projection Chamber
The energy and electric field dependence of pulse shape discrimination in
liquid xenon have been measured in a 10 gm two-phase xenon time projection
chamber. We have demonstrated the use of the pulse shape and charge-to-light
ratio simultaneously to obtain a leakage below that achievable by either
discriminant alone. A Monte Carlo is used to show that the dominant fluctuation
in the pulse shape quantity is statistical in nature, and project the
performance of these techniques in larger detectors. Although the performance
is generally weak at low energies relevant to elastic WIMP recoil searches, the
pulse shape can be used in probing for higher energy inelastic WIMP recoils.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure
Parents' perceived obstacles to pediatric clinical trial participation: Findings from the clinical trials transformation initiative.
Enrollment of children into pediatric clinical trials remains challenging. More effective strategies to improve recruitment of children into trials are needed. This study used in-depth qualitative interviews with parents who were approached to enroll their children in a clinical trial in order to gain an understanding of the barriers to pediatric clinical trial participation. Twenty-four parents whose children had been offered the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial were interviewed: 19 whose children had participated in at least 1 clinical trial and 5 who had declined participation in any trial. Each study aspect, from the initial explanation of the study to the end of the study, can affect the willingness of parents to consent to the proposed study and future studies. Establishing trust, appropriate timing, a transparent discussion of risks and benefits oriented to the layperson, and providing motivation for children to participate were key factors that impacted parents' decisions. In order for clinical trial accrual to be successful, parents' priorities and considerations must be a central focus, beginning with initial trial design. The recommendations from the parents who participated in this study can be used to support budget allocations that ensure adequate training of study staff and improved staffing on nights and weekends. Studies of parent responses in outpatient settings and additional inpatient settings will provide valuable information on the consent process from the child's and parent's perspectives. Further studies are needed to explore whether implementation of such strategies will result in improved recruitment for pediatric clinical trials

Do attractive bosons condense?
Motivated by experiments on bose atoms in traps which have attractive
interactions (e.g. ^7Li), we consider two models which may be solved exactly.
We construct the ground states subject to the constraint that the system is
rotating with angular momentum proportional to the number of atoms. In a
conventional system this would lead to quantised vortices; here, for attractive
interactions, we find that the angular momentum is absorbed by the centre of
mass motion. Moreover, the state is uncondensed and is an example of a
`fragmented' condensate discussed by Nozi\`eres and Saint James. The same
models with repulsive interactions are fully condensed in the thermodynamic

Zero-temperature phase diagram of binary boson-fermion mixtures
We calculate the phase diagram for dilute mixtures of bosons and fermions at
zero temperature. The linear stability conditions are derived and related to
the effective boson-induced interaction between the fermions. We show that in
equilibrium there are three possibilities: a) a single uniform phase, b) a
purely fermionic phase coexisting with a purely bosonic one and c) a purely

Vortices in Bose-Einstein-Condensed Atomic Clouds
The properties of vortex states in a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of atoms
are considered at zero temperature. Using both analytical and numerical methods
we solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the case when a cloud
of atoms containing a vortex is released from a trap. In two dimensions we find
the simple result that the time dependence of the cloud radius is given by
, where is the trap frequency. We calculate and
compare the expansion of the vortex core and the cloud radius for different
numbers of particles and interaction strengths, in both two and three
dimensions, and discuss the circumstances under which vortex states may be

Perceived barriers to pediatrician and family practitioner participation in pediatric clinical trials: Findings from the Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative.
Despite legislation to stimulate pediatric drug development through clinical trials, enrolling children in trials continues to be challenging. Non-investigator (those who have never served as a clinical trial investigator) providers are essential to recruitment of pediatric patients, but little is known regarding the specific barriers that limit pediatric providers from participating in and referring their patients to clinical trials. We conducted an online survey of pediatric providers from a wide variety of practice types across the United States to evaluate their attitudes and awareness of pediatric clinical trials. Using a 4-point Likert scale, providers described their perception of potential barriers to their practice serving as a site for pediatric clinical trials. Of the 136 providers surveyed, 52/136 (38%) had previously referred a pediatric patient to a trial, and only 17/136 (12%) had ever been an investigator for a pediatric trial. Lack of awareness of existing pediatric trials was a major barrier to patient referral by providers, in addition to consideration of trial risks, distance to the site, and time needed to discuss trial participation with parents. Overall, providers perceived greater challenges related to parental concerns and parent or child logistical barriers than study implementation and ethics or regulatory barriers as barriers to their practice serving as a trial site. Providers who had previously been an investigator for a pediatric trial were less likely to be concerned with potential barriers than non-investigators. Understanding the barriers that limit pediatric providers from collaboration or inhibit their participation is key to designing effective interventions to optimize pediatric trial participation
