    On-site Coulomb interaction and the magnetism of (GaMn)N and (GaMn)As

    We use the local density approximation (LDA) and LDA+U schemes to study the magnetism of (GaMn)As and (GaMn)N for a number of Mn concentrations and varying number of holes. We show that for both systems and both calculational schemes the presence of holes is crucial for establishing ferromagnetism. For both systems, the introduction of UU increases delocalization of the holes and, simultaneously, decreases the p-d interaction. Since these two trends exert opposite influences on the Mn-Mn exchange interaction the character of the variation of the Curie temperature (TC_C) cannot be predicted without direct calculation. We show that the variation of TC_C is different for two systems. For low Mn concentrations we obtain the tendency to increasing TC_C in the case of (GaMn)N whereas an opposite tendency to decreasing TC_C is obtained for (GaMn)As. We reveal the origin of this difference by inspecting the properties of the densities of states and holes for both systems. The main body of calculations is performed within a supercell approach. The Curie temperatures calculated within the coherent potential approximation to atomic disorder are reported for comparison. Both approaches give similar qualitative behavior.     Orbital Dependent Phase Control in Ca2-xSrxRuO4

    We present first-principles studies on the orbital states of the layered perovskites Ca2x_{2-x}Srx_xRuO4_4. The crossover from antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator for x<0.2x < 0.2 to nearly ferromagnetic (FM) metal at x=0.5x=0.5 is characterized by the systematic change of the xyxy orbital occupation. For the AF side (x<0.2x < 0.2), we present firm evidence for the xyxy ferro-orbital ordering. It is found that the degeneracy of t2gt_{2g} (or ege_g) states is lifted robustly due to the two-dimensional (2D) crystal-structure, even without the Jahn-Teller distortion of RuO6_6. This effect dominates, and the cooperative occupation of xyxy orbital is concluded. In contrast to recent proposals, the resulting electronic structure explains well both the observed X-ray absorption spectra and the double peak structure of optical conductivity. For the FM side (x=0.5x=0.5), however, the xyxy orbital with half filling opens a pseudo-gap in the FM state and contributes to the spin SS=1/2 moment (rather than SS=1 for xx=0.0 case) dominantly, while yz,zxyz,zx states are itinerant with very small spin polarization, explaining the recent neutron data consistently.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure

    A look at the other 90 per cent: Investigating British Sign Language vocabulary knowledge in deaf children from different language learning backgrounds

    In this study we present new data on deaf children's receptive and expressive vocabulary knowledge in British Sign Language (BSL) from a sample consisting of children with deaf parents, children with hearing parents, and children with additional needs. Their performance on three BSL vocabulary tasks was compared with (previously reported findings from) a sample of deaf fluent signers. We use these data to assess the effects of some key demographic/ child variables on deaf signing children's vocabulary and discuss findings in the relation to the meaning of 'normative' data and samples for this heterogeneous population. Findings show no effect of the presence of additional disabilities on participants' scores for any of the three tasks. As expected, chronological age is the most significant factor in performance on all vocabulary tasks while the number of deaf relatives only becomes statistically significant for the form recall task. This study contributes to the field of sign language assessment by seeking to identify key variables in heterogeneity and how these variables affect signed vocabulary acquisition with the long-term objective of informing intervention

    Will Improving My Marriage Improve My Sleep?

    An essential component to overall health and well-being is sleep. Likewise, being happily married is associated with better physical, mental, and emotional health. In the present study, we examined links between marital satisfaction (MS) and aspects of sleep quality (SQ) among married individuals (N = 88) aged 39 to 64 years. Data were collected at baseline and 6-month follow-up. Regression analyses showed that MS at baseline was positively associated with overall SQ and sleep disturbance frequency at baseline and was negatively associated with minutes to fall asleep at follow-up. Results suggested that participants with greater MS at baseline reported better overall SQ at baseline and falling asleep faster at follow-up. However, results varied when controlling for other relevant covariates (e.g., age, depression, pain). Additionally, a negative change in MS between baseline and follow-up was a positive predictor of sleep disturbance frequency at follow-up, suggesting that participants whose MS decreased over time were more likely to report more frequent sleep disturbances 6 months later. Findings indicate that MS is linked with various aspects of SQ in married, middle-aged adults. Clinical implications, limitations of the current study, and areas for future research are discussed
