Direct Slicing of STEP Based NURBS Models for Solid Freeform Fabrication
Direct slicing of CAD models to generate process planning instructions for solid freeform
fabrication may overcome inherent disadvantages of using STL format in terms of the process
accuracy, ease of file management, and incorporation of multiple materials. This paper will
present the results of our development of a direct slicing algorithm for layered freeform
fabrication. The direct slicing algorithm was based on a neutral, international standard (ISO
10303) STEP-formatted NURBS geometric representation and is intended to be independent of
any commercial CAD software. The following aspects of the development effort will be
presented: 1) Determination of optimal build direction based upon STEP-based NURBS models;
2) Adaptive subdivision of NURBS data for geometric refinement; and 3) Ray-casting slice
generation into sets of raster patterns. Feasibility studies applying the direct slicing algorithm to
example models and the generation of fabrication planning instructions involving multi-material
structures will also be presented.Mechanical Engineerin
Hyperuniversality of Fully Anisotropic Three-Dimensional Ising Model
For the fully anisotropic simple-cubic Ising lattice, the critical
finite-size scaling amplitudes of both the spin-spin and energy-energy inverse
correlation lengths and the singular part of the reduced free-energy density
are calculated by the transfer-matrix method and a finite-size scaling for
cyclic L x L x oo clusters with L=3 and 4. Analysis of the data obtained shows
that the ratios and the directional geometric means of above amplitudes are
universal.Comment: RevTeX 3.0, 24 pages, 2 figures upon request, accepted for

Evidence for Intergalactic Absorption in the TeV Gamma-Ray Spectrum of Mkn 501
The recent HEGRA observations of the blazar Mkn 501 show strong curvature in
the very high energy gamma-ray spectrum. Applying the gamma-ray opacity derived
from an empirically based model of the intergalactic infrared background
radiation field (IIRF), to these observations, we find that the intrinsic
spectrum of this source is consistent with a power-law: dN/dE~ E^-alpha with
alpha=2.00 +/- 0.03 over the range 500 GeV - 20 TeV. Within current synchrotron
self-Compton scenarios, the fact that the TeV spectral energy distribution of
Mkn 501 does not vary with luminosity, combined with the correlated, spectrally
variable emission in X-rays, as observed by the BeppoSAX and RXTE instruments,
also independently implies that the intrinsic spectrum must be close to
alpha=2. Thus, the observed curvature in the spectrum is most easily understood
as resulting from intergalactic absorption.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, accepted in ApJ Letters 1999 April
Multiwavelength Observations of a Flare from Markarian 501
We present multiwavelength observations of the BL Lacertae object Markarian
501 (Mrk 501) in 1997 between April 8 and April 19. Evidence of correlated
variability is seen in very high energy (VHE, E > 350 GeV) gamma-ray
observations taken with the Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope, data from
the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment of the Compton Gamma-Ray
Observatory, and quicklook results from the All-Sky Monitor of the Rossi X-ray
Timing Explorer while the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope did not
detect Mrk 501. Short term optical correlations are not conclusive but the
U-band flux observed with the 1.2m telescope of the Whipple Observatory was 10%
higher than in March. The average energy output of Mrk 501 appears to peak in
the 2 keV to 100 keV range suggesting an extension of the synchrotron emission
to at least 100 keV, the highest observed in a blazar and ~100 times higher
than that seen in the other TeV-emitting BL Lac object, Mrk 421. The VHE
gamma-ray flux observed during this period is the highest ever detected from
this object. The VHE gamma-ray energy output is somewhat lower than the 2-100
keV range but the variability amplitude is larger. The correlations seen here
do not require relativistic beaming of the emission unless the VHE spectrum
extends to >5 TeV.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
On the distribution of career longevity and the evolution of home run prowess in professional baseball
Statistical analysis is a major aspect of baseball, from player averages to
historical benchmarks and records. Much of baseball fanfare is based around
players exceeding the norm, some in a single game and others over a long
career. Career statistics serve as a metric for classifying players and
establishing their historical legacy. However, the concept of records and
benchmarks assumes that the level of competition in baseball is stationary in
time. Here we show that power-law probability density functions, a hallmark of
many complex systems that are driven by competition, govern career longevity in
baseball. We also find similar power laws in the density functions of all major
performance metrics for pitchers and batters. The use of performance-enhancing
drugs has a dark history, emerging as a problem for both amateur and
professional sports. We find statistical evidence consistent with
performance-enhancing drugs in the analysis of home runs hit by players in the
last 25 years. This is corroborated by the findings of the Mitchell Report [1],
a two-year investigation into the use of illegal steroids in major league
baseball, which recently revealed that over 5 percent of major league baseball
players tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in an anonymous 2003
survey.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 2-column revtex4 format. Revision has change of

Direct slicing of STEP based NURBS models for layered manufacturing
Abstract Direct slicing of CAD models to generate process planning instructions for solid freeform fabrication may overcome inherent disadvantages of using stereolithography format in terms of the process accuracy, ease of file management, and incorporation of multiple materials. This paper will present the results of our development of a direct slicing algorithm for layered freeform fabrication. The direct slicing algorithm was based on a neutral, international standard (ISO 10303) STEP-formatted non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) geometric representation and is intended to be independent of any commercial CAD software. The following aspects of the development effort will be presented: (1) determination of optimal build direction based upon STEP-based NURBS models; (2) adaptive subdivision of NURBS data for geometric refinement; and (3) ray-casting slice generation into sets of raster patterns. The development also provides for multi-material slicing and will provide an effective tool in heterogeneous slicing processes.
