We surveyed bats at 49 sites in the Loess Hills Ecoregion of southeastern Nebraska, along the western edge of the eastern forest biome in eastern Richardson, Nemaha, and Otoe counties. We completed this study shortly before the northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) was listed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act. The expectation of listing, along with potential presence of the endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), motivated the study. We captured 183 bats of five species: eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis) (n = 103; 56 %), big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) (n = 47; 26 %), evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis) (n = 27; 15 %), hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) (n = 4; 2 %), and northern long-eared bat (n = 2; 1 %). The mean catch per net site was 3.7 bats (SD = 4.8). The Eastern red bat was captured most commonly and at the most sites. We established the first record of this species from Nemaha County, with reproduction documented in all three counties. More reproductive female red bats were captured than adult males. Big brown bat captures consisted of approximately equal proportions adult males, reproductive females, and volant young of year. We established the first records for big brown bat reproduction in Otoe and Nemaha counties. Only reproductive female and juvenile evening bats were captured, with geographic and reproductive records established for all three counties. Captures of the hoary bat, a lactating female at one site and two juveniles at another, represented a Nemaha County geographic and reproductive record. We radio-tagged a non-reproductive female and an adult male northern long-eared bat from Otoe County and tracked them to roosts along the Missouri River, 3.43 and 2.03 km from the net site, respectively. We completed four emergence counts at each roost, with each bat exiting its respective roost on only one evening and neither bat visiting the other roost. We never documented more than three individuals exiting each roost on a given night. Overall, this study documented relatively low abundance, species richness, and species diversity when compared to studies in the eastern United States

How harmonic is dipole resonance of metal clusters?

    Get PDF
We discuss the degree of anharmonicity of dipole plasmon resonances in metal clusters. We employ the time-dependent variational principle and show that the relative shift of the second phonon scales as N−4/3N^{-4/3} in energy, NN being the number of particles. This scaling property coincides with that for nuclear giant resonances. Contrary to the previous study based on the boson-expansion method, the deviation from the harmonic limit is found to be almost negligible for Na clusters, the result being consistent with the recent experimental observation.Comment: RevTex, 8 page

Occurrence of periodic Lam\'e functions at bifurcations in chaotic Hamiltonian systems

    Get PDF
We investigate cascades of isochronous pitchfork bifurcations of straight-line librating orbits in some two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with mixed phase space. We show that the new bifurcated orbits, which are responsible for the onset of chaos, are given analytically by the periodic solutions of the Lam\'e equation as classified in 1940 by Ince. In Hamiltonians with C_2v{2v} symmetry, they occur alternatingly as Lam\'e functions of period 2K and 4K, respectively, where 4K is the period of the Jacobi elliptic function appearing in the Lam\'e equation. We also show that the two pairs of orbits created at period-doubling bifurcations of touch-and-go type are given by two different linear combinations of algebraic Lam\'e functions with period 8K.Comment: LaTeX2e, 22 pages, 14 figures. Anomalous Fisher-like zeros for the canonical partition function of noninteracting fermions

Noninteracting fermions, placed in a system with a continuous density of states, may have zeros in the NN-fermion canonical partition function on the positive real ÎČ\beta axis (or very close to it), even for a small number of particles. This results in a singular free energy, and instability in other thermal properties of the system. In the context of trapped fermions in a harmonic oscillator, these zeros are shown to be unphysical. By contrast, similar bosonic calculations with continuous density of states yield sensible results.Noninteracting fermions, placed in a system with a continuous density of states yield sensible results.Comment: 5 pages and 5 figure

Beyond the local approximation to exchange and correlation: the role of the Laplacian of the density in the energy density of Si

We model the exchange-correlation (XC) energy density of the Si crystal and atom as calculated by variational Monte Carlo (VMC) methods with a gradient analysis beyond the local density approximation (LDA). We find the Laplacian of the density to be an excellent predictor of the discrepancy between VMC and LDA energy densities in each system. A simple Laplacian-based correction to the LDA energy density is developed by means of a least square fit to the VMC XC energy density for the crystal, which fits the homogeneous electron gas and Si atom without further effort.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Stable classical structures in dissipative quantum chaotic systems

We study the stability of classical structures in chaotic systems when a dissipative quantum evolution takes place. We consider a paradigmatic model, the quantum baker map in contact with a heat bath at finite temperature. We analyze the behavior of the purity, fidelity and Husimi distributions corresponding to initial states localized on short periodic orbits (scar functions) and map eigenstates. Scar functions, that have a fundamental role in the semiclassical description of chaotic systems, emerge as very robust against environmental perturbations. This is confirmed by the study of other states localized on classical structures. Also, purity and fidelity show a complementary behavior as decoherence measures.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Coupling of Surface and Volume Dipole Oscillations in C-60 Molecules

We first give a short review of the ``local-current approximation'' (LCA), derived from a general variation principle, which serves as a semiclassical description of strongly collective excitations in finite fermion systems starting from their quantum-mechanical mean-field ground state. We illustrate it for the example of coupled translational and compressional dipole excitations in metal clusters. We then discuss collective electronic dipole excitations in C60_{60} molecules (Buckminster fullerenes). We show that the coupling of the pure translational mode (``surface plasmon'') with compressional volume modes in the semiclasscial LCA yields semi-quantitative agreement with microscopic time-dependent density functional (TDLDA) calculations, while both theories yield qualitative agreement with the recent experimental observation of a ``volume plasmon''.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, 5 figures (8 *.eps files); Contribution to XIV-th Nuclear Physics Workshop at Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, Sept. 26-29, 200

Analytical relationship for the cranking inertia

    Get PDF
The wave function of a spheroidal harmonic oscillator without spin-orbit interaction is expressed in terms of associated Laguerre and Hermite polynomials. The pairing gap and Fermi energy are found by solving the BCS system of two equations. Analytical relationships for the matrix elements of inertia are obtained function of the main quantum numbers and potential derivative. They may be used to test complex computer codes one should develop in a realistic approach of the fission dynamics. The results given for the 240^{240}Pu nucleus are compared with a hydrodynamical model. The importance of taking into account the correction term due to the variation of the occupation number is stressed.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

Duality between quantum and classical dynamics for integrable billiards

We establish a duality between the quantum wave vector spectrum and the eigenmodes of the classical Liouvillian dynamics for integrable billiards. Signatures of the classical eigenmodes appear as peaks in the correlation function of the quantum wave vector spectrum. A semiclassical derivation and numerical calculations are presented in support of the results. These classical eigenmodes can be observed in physical experiments through the auto-correlation of the transmission coefficient of waves in quantum billiards. Exact classical trace formulas of the resolvent are derived for the rectangle, equilateral triangle, and circle billiards. We also establish a correspondence between the classical periodic orbit length spectrum and the quantum spectrum for integrable polygonal billiards.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

Stability of bubble nuclei through Shell-Effects

    Get PDF
We investigate the shell structure of bubble nuclei in simple phenomenological shell models and study their binding energy as a function of the radii and of the number of neutron and protons using Strutinsky's method. Shell effects come about, on the one hand, by the high degeneracy of levels with large angular momentum and, on the other, by the big energy gaps between states with a different number of radial nodes. Shell energies down to -40 MeV are shown to occur for certain magic nuclei. Estimates demonstrate that the calculated shell effects for certain magic numbers of constituents are probably large enough to produce stability against fission, alpha-, and beta-decay. No bubble solutions are found for mass number A < 450.Comment: 9 pages and 9 figures in the eps format include
