Contextual expertise and the development of organization and management theory
Generating theory from research settings requires researchers to adeptly engage with the social intricacies of the field. They need to develop a contextual understanding by gaining in-depth insights into the setting, while retaining a critical distance from it. Researchers must practice this along the entire research journey, from site selection, through data collection and analyses, to theory development and explanation. However, contextual expertise has been assumed rather than actively considered as a critical component in organization and management studies. We lay out steps for understanding the nature of contextual expertise, offer systematic advice for research projects and outline methodological practices across the research process to choose, capture, comprehend, convey, and confirm contextual specificities. The growing social complexity of research settings renders the development of contextual expertise increasingly important for the generation of enriched and more diverse theory. It also has implications for organization and management studies as a scientific community
Confirmation of candidature: an autoethnographic reflection from the dual identities of student and research administrator
The confirmation of candidature is a significant milestone in Higher Degree by Research programs. As research administrators, and as doctoral candidates ourselves, we have observed and experienced many different approaches to the confirmation of candidature process. In this chapter we describe the confirmation of candidature process at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) with a brief comparison to other institutions’ processes. We use an autoethnographic approach to discuss the positive aspects of the confirmation of candidature process for research candidates with the aim of providing a rationale for the process and to answer the ‘why do I have to do this?’ question we are often asked in our research administrator roles. The chapter includes a set of useful and practical strategies that will assist research students to successfully complete the confirmation of candidature milestone. It is hoped that this information will be useful to research students, supervisors of research students, and the academic and administrative staff that are involved in the confirmation of candidature process
'A critical autoethnography of a doctoral students ’ research journey: learning to take risks in the academy
What is missing in present-day physical education teacher education research is the individual female doctoral student perspective and how individuals come to understand academic research culture within the neoliberal university. Through a critical autoethnography, this paper uncovered a transformative learning journey of one doctoral student as she encountered the field of research in higher education. After taking a critically orientated qualitative methods class, the doctoral student recognised that the neoliberal university includes a research agenda entwined in politics, finding that neophyte researchers should be aware of the ‘mess’ (Cheek, J. By questioning how one is disciplined in research and through becoming aware of normalising techniques, the doctoral student interrogated her research methods and philosophical orientation. Walnut Creek: Left Coast Press) and autoethnography provided the doctoral student with an opportunity for alternate meaning-making, which can be productive in understanding the journey of becoming in academia
Rhetoric of commonality: an Afrocentric analysis of Jesse Jackson's discourse and performance at the 1984 and 1988 Democratic National conventions
Despite the vast research by rhetorical scholars on political communication, scant attention has been paid to contemporary black political speech, which is becoming increasingly present. The present study provides an analysis of Jesse Jackson's 1984 and 1988 Democratic National Convention (DNC) discourse to discover how his rhetoric conforms to an Afrocentric rhetorical ideology. This study also examines how Jackson's performance of gender and race identity functions in the dominant American political sphere, employing three representative identities of black masculinity, the race man, the new black aesthetic, and the nigga. The significance of this study is punctuated by the idea Jackson used a culture-centered rhetorical approach to capture diverse audiences, when delivering speeches of major importance, while embracing his identity. Through examining his most popular pieces of discourse from 1984 and 1988, this study first attempts to analyze Jackson's rhetoric using the method of rhetorical criticism, specifically, Afrocentricity to examine his speech text. Second, this study examines Jackson's rhetorical performance of his black masculine identity. As a result, Jackson's discourse and rhetorical performance of his identity offers implications concerning Afrocentricity and black masculinity. (Published By University of Alabama Libraries
Work hard, fit in, and applaud her:Women developers blogging about their lived experiences
Women are under-represented in information technology (IT) professions, globally. It is widely discussed that there is an urgent need to tackle this issue by bringing more women into the IT industry. However, the spotlight is less often put on women currently working as developers in male-dominated environments. How do these women experience their work and deal with problems? International non-profit initiatives such as Women who Code (WwC) aim not only at supporting women in training for and entering IT professions: they also advise them in their daily lives and struggles as developers. Using this network and its blog as a case study, I show that the WwC bloggers are faced with contradictory work norms and experiences. They tend to resort to pragmatic advice, focused on DIY problem solving, and shouldered individual responsibility rather than highlighting systemic failures. This tendency shows similarities to neoliberal feminist rationales and speaks to the need for (re)emphasizing the need for structural changes within the broader discourse concerning women developers.</p
