Autonomy, Competence, Relatedness, and Personal Growth Initiative Among Postpartum Women

    Get PDF
Prior research on maternal postpartum care, the transition to motherhood, pelvic floor dysfunction, and pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) has revealed that postpartum women are often denied the basic information, instruction, and preventive strategies necessary for optimal postbirth rehabilitation and psychological well-being. Employing a dual framework of self-determination theory and personal growth initiative (PGI) theory, this quantitative study utilized a cross-sectional design to investigate if autonomy, competence, and relatedness satisfaction predicted PGI in postpartum women. Differences in autonomy, competence, relatedness, and PGI between PFMT practicing and nonpracticing postpartum women were also examined. A web-based survey method was employed to collect data from 229 postpartum women, which consisted of 121 women not practicing PFMT and 108 women practicing PFMT. The Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale measured autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The PGI Scale-II measured PGI. Standard multiple regression and 4 independent-samples t tests were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that autonomy, competence, and relatedness predicted PGI. There were no significant mean differences between PFMT practicing and nonpracticing women. These findings have implications for positive social change such that the medical community and policy makers can utilize the fulfillment of postpartum women\u27s needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness to improve women\u27s odds for optimal adjustment and adaptation to life after childbirth

Auger electron spectroscopy study of oxidation of a PdCr alloy used for high-temperature sensors

    Get PDF
A Pd-13 wt. percent Cr solid solution is a promising high-temperature strain gage alloy. In bulk form it has a number of properties that are desirable in a resistance strain gage material, such as a linear electrical resistance versus temperature curve to 1000 C and stable electrical resistance in air at 1000 C. However, unprotected fine wire gages fabricated from this alloy perform well only to 600 C. At higher temperatures severe oxidation degrades their electrical performance. In this work Auger electron spectroscopy was used to study the oxidation chemistry of the alloy wires and ribbons. Results indicate that the oxidation is caused by a complex mechanism that is not yet fully understood. As expected, during oxidation, a layer of chromium oxide is formed. This layer, however, forms beneath a layer of metallic palladium. The results of this study have increased the understanding of the oxidation mechanism of Pd-13 wt. percent Cr

An Exploratory Study into the Nonprofit Communication Profession - A Job Description Content Analysis

    Get PDF
Nonprofit public relations and role theory have both been studied in-depth, but this study seeks to employ an innovative method that will not only answer research questions on nonprofit public relations but also has the potential to change the way researchers study public relations and nonprofit public relations role theories (Dozier & Broom, 2006; Dyer, Harrison, & Weber, 2002; Grunig, 2006). A content analysis of job descriptions from nonprofit organizations for communications positions was conducted to study the responsibilities and tasks the organizations want to emphasize. Specifically, this study illuminates the tasks that are common within nonprofit public relations roles and examine tasks that are unique to public relations like fundraising and marketing. This content analysis also focused on the how the positions fit within the management-technician dichotomy. The management roles were further dissected into four management categories (Fieseler et al., 2015). The results of this study confirm that marketing and fundraising are both prominent factors in nonprofit public relations practitioners’ roles. The results also show that the coaching and liaison management types are by far the most-frequent, encompassing advising management, coaching employees, media relations, and donor relations. This research impacts nonprofits, practitioners, educators, and academia. Furthermore, this exploratory study provides the opportunity for much more research of this variety.Master of Art

Introduction of Problem-based Learning in a School of Physiotherapy

    Get PDF
This change project consisted of designing and implementing a module to the Final year undergraduate physiotherapy students using a problem-based learning approach. During this module the students were divided into four groups and each group was facilitated throughout the module by a member of the academic staff. The students were presented with two problems. The students discussed the problems in their small groups. Afterwards, the students engaged in independent study on the learning issues identified outside the small group session. They returned to their group some days later and shared / applied what they had learnt. The initiative was driven by the challenge to prepare the students for the diversity of the working environment in which they will practice. In addition, this initiative was also driven by a need to meet the challenge of providing students with highest quality in teaching and learning experience. The HSE Change model (2008) guided the change process. The module was implemented in May 2013. Evaluation of the process was undertaken using Stufflebeam’s (2007) Context, Input, Process and Product (CIPP) evaluation model. Acknowledgment and positive feedback from the staff and students were considered as significant enablers by the change leader. Further implementation is recommended on a gradual basis

The relationship between admission criteria and pre-service teacher preparedness for a small rural educator preparation provider

    Get PDF
Pre-service teacher preparedness is a measurement of a teacher candidate’s ability to become an effective teacher (Clark, Byrnes, & Sudweeks, 2015). A growing number of Educator Preparation Providers’ (EPPs’) accrediting agencies are insisting that to improve pre-service teacher preparedness, EPPs must increase the rigor of their admission criteria. However, the research is inconclusive regarding whether a relationship exists between admission criteria and pre-service teacher preparedness. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the Educator Preparation Provider’s (EPP’s) current teacher education program admission criteria and pre-service teacher preparedness measurements to determine if the EPP should increase its admission criteria. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between the three independent variables of admission criteria and the dependent variable of teacher preparedness. Results indicate no significant relationship between admission criteria and teacher preparedness. Findings were used to create a recommendation regarding the EPP’s admission criteria to the teacher education program
