    Nonlinear coherent transport of waves in disordered media

    We present a diagrammatic theory for coherent backscattering from disordered dilute media in the nonlinear regime. The approach is non-perturbative in the strength of the nonlinearity. We show that the coherent backscattering enhancement factor is strongly affected by the nonlinearity, and corroborate these results by numerical simulations. Our theory can be applied to several physical scenarios like scattering of light in nonlinear Kerr media, or propagation of matter waves in disordered potentials.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Post Big Bang Processing of the Primordial Elements

    We explore the Gnedin-Ostriker suggestion that a post-Big-Bang photodissociation process may modify the primordial abundances of the light elements. We consider several specific models and discuss the general features that are necessary (but not necessarily sufficient) to make the model work. We find that with any significant processing, the final D and 3^3He abundances, which are independent of their initial standard big bang nucleosynthesis (SBBN) values, rise quickly to a level several orders of magnitude above the observationally inferred primordial values. Solutions for specific models show that the only initial abundances that can be photoprocessed into agreement with observations are those that undergo virtually no processing and are already in agreement with observation. Thus it is unlikely that this model can work for any non-trivial case unless an artificial density and/or photon distribution is invoked.Comment: 12 page Latex file (AASTEX style).     PAH in the laboratory and interstellar space

    The theory that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a constituent of the interstellar medium, and a source of the IR emission bands at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 microns is being studied using PAH containing acid insoluble residue of the Orgueil CI meteorite and coal tar. FTIR spectra of Orgueil PAH material that has undergone thermal treatment, and a solvent insoluble fraction of coal tar that has been exposed to hydrogen plasma are presented. The UV excided luminescence spectrum of a solvent soluble coal tar film is also shown. Comparison of the lab measurements with observations appears to support the interstellar PAH theory, and shows the process of dehydrogenation expected to take place in the interstellar medium

    Ion bombardment experiments suggesting an origin for organic particles in pre-cometary and cometary ices

    During the Giotto and Vega encounters with Comet Halley both organic particles called CHON and energetic ions were detected. The acceleration of ions to hundreds of keV in the vicinity of the bow shock and near the nucleus may be a demonstration of a situation occurring in the early solar system (perhaps during the T Tauri stage) that led to the formation of organic particles only now released. Utilizing a Van de Graaff accelerator and a target chamber having cryogenic and mass spectrometer capabilities, frozen gases were bombarded at 10 K with 175 keV protons with the result that fluffy solid material remains after sublimation of the ice. Initial experiments were carried out with a gas mixture in parts of 170 carbon monoxide, 170 argon, 25 water, 20 nitrogen, and 15 methane formulated to reflect an interstellar composition in experiments involving the freezing out of the products of a plasma. The plasma experiments resulted in a varnish-like film residue that exhibited luminescence when excited with ultraviolet radiation, while the ion bombardment created particulate material that was not luminescent

    Comment on form factor shape and extraction of |V_ub| from B --> pi l nu

    We point out that current experimental data for partial B --> pi l nu branching fractions reduce the theoretical input required for a precise extraction of |V_ub| to the form factor normalization at a single value of the pion energy. We show that the heavy-quark expansion provides a bound on the form factor shape that is orders of magnitude more stringent than conventional unitarity bounds. We find |V_ub| = (3.7 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.1) x [0.8/F_+(16 GeV^2)]. The first error is from the experimental branching fractions, and the second is a conservative bound on the residual form factor shape uncertainty, both of which will improve with additional data. Together with current and future lattice determinations of the form factor normalization this result gives an accurate, model independent determination of |V_ub|. We further extract semileptonic shape observables such as |V_ub F_+(0)| = 0.92 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.03 and show how these observables can be used to test factorization and to determine low-energy parameters in hadronic B decays.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures; journal version, results and conclusions unchange

    Is Islam Pro- or Anti-Environmental? Interpretations and Implications

    Religion has, throughout the centuries, been a powerful institution on the macro level, yet also stands as a force having significant influence in people’s personal lives. This does, however, lead to questions of how a traditional institution such as religion may or may not be adequate to address problems of the Late Industrial Era, most notably the environmental crisis. In this paper, we inquire how various dimensions of Islamic literature and thought can contribute to preserving the natural environment. We find that concepts such as “dominion of men over the earth” and “specialness of humankind” can lead to anti-environmental interpretations of Islam. Nevertheless, other interpretations of Islamic teachings emerge that are compatible with environmental stewardship. However, a number of Islamic governments have shown a decided bias against environmental stewardship, particularly in cases where there is an authoritarian government and one placing an emphasis on economic “development”. In counterpoint, Islamic Mysticism, or Sufism, can provide a spiritual context for environmentally conscious action

    Elective Affinities in the Anthropocene: Christianity and the Natural Environment Reconsidered

    To reach a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between religion and the natural environment, it is important to move beyond essentializing any religious tradition as having a pro-environmental or anti-environmental ethic. Rather, prior work has shown that the canonical, scholarly, and popular literatures and discourse of a number of religious traditions can and have been socially and rhetorically constructed as supporting an array of positions, from preservation to profligacy, and much in between those two ideal types. In this paper, we develop Max Weber’s theory of “elective affinities” and adapt it to the Anthropocene, to make the case that in a fragmented society, people and communities of convenience tend to choose the tropes and framing from the dominant culture to justify self-interested action. That often can take the form of religious discourse. In the sense of finding a wide array of practical interpretations relative to the environment, the theory is largely supported, although we do find important nuances. It is instructive to look at how the language and legitimacy of one institution (e.g. religion) has been used to justify and legitimate that of others (e.g. the polity). While these processes of institutional co-optation can be effective in the short run, they may have corrosive longer-term effects. Key rhetorical, and in fact political, battles in the Third Millennium, will likely be organized around how to adapt pre-industrial religion to late industrial and perhaps post-industrial times, and it remains to see how central the natural environment will be in what communities hold sacred

    Precision spectroscopy and density-dependent frequency shifts in ultracold Sr

    By varying the density of an ultracold 88^{88}Sr sample from 10910^9 cm3^{-3} to >1012> 10^{12} cm3^{-3}, we make the first definitive measurement of the density-related frequency shift and linewidth broadening of the 1S0^1S_0 - 3P1^3P_1 optical clock transition in an alkaline earth system. In addition, we report the most accurate measurement to date of the 88^{88}Sr 1S03P1^1S_0 - ^3P_1 optical clock transition frequency. Including a detailed analysis of systematic errors, the frequency is (434829121312334±20stat±33sys434 829 121 312 334 \pm 20_{stat} \pm 33_{sys}) Hz.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. submitte
