    Tuning the Hydrophobicity of Layer-Structure Silicates To Promote Adsorption of Nonaqueous Fluids: Effects of F– for OH– Substitution on CO2 Partitioning into Smectite Interlayers

    The intercalation of non-aqueous fluids in the nanopores of organic and inorganic materials is of significant interest, particularly in the energy science community. Recently, XRD and computational modeling results have shown that structural F- for OH- substitution in layered silicates makes them more hydrophobic. Here, we use Grand Canonical Molecular Dynamics (GCMD) calculations to investigate how increasing the F-/(F-+OH-) ratio of a prototypical layered silicate (the smectite Na-hectorite) impacts the intercalation behavior of CO2 and H2O at elevated temperature and pressure. At the conditions of this study (T = 323 K, P = 90 bar, water-saturated CO2), increasing F- for OH- substitution causes decreasing total CO2+H2O intercalation, increasing CO2/(CO2+H2O) ratios in the interlayer galleries, and an increasing energy barrier to CO2 and H2O intercalation. CO2 intercalation is greatest at monolayer basal spacings, and the results support the idea that with Na+ as the exchangeable cation the interlayers must be propped open by some H2O molecules to allow CO2 to enter the interlayer galleries. The computed immersion energies suggest that the bilayer or a more expanded structure is the stable state under these conditions, in agreement with experimental results, and that the basal spacings of the minimum energy 2L structures increase with increasing F- for OH- substitution. These results are consistent with a wide range of experimental data for smectites at ambient conditions and elevated pressures and temperatures and suggest that F- for OH- substitution in conjunction with reduced structural charge and exchange with large, low charge cations may increase the ability of smectite minerals to incorporate hydrophobic species such as CH4, CO2, H2, and other organic compounds

    High mobility titanium-doped indium oxide for use in tandem solar cells deposited via pulsed DC magnetron sputtering

The effects of pulsed DC (PDC) magnetron sputtering on the crystalline structure of the high mobility transparent conducting oxide (TCO), titanium-doped indium oxide (ITiO), are investigated. High mobility (μ >100 V-1s-1cm2) ITiO films are deposited by PDC magnetron sputtering and compared to RF deposited films using optimized conditions. These high mobility ITiO films have shown to extend the transmission in the NIR region compared to typical TCOs, such as ITO, exhibiting their potential in a tandem or multiple junction solar cell application. ITiO films deposited by PDC magnetron sputtering offer an increased deposition rate without a significant reduction in mobility when compared to RF sputtering, thus potentially offering PDC as a preferred industrial choice over RF sputtering. Structural characterization of the ITiO films prepared by PDC show a change in crystalline orientation and crystallite shape when compared to RF films, measured by XRD and SEM, which have been linked with the electrical parameters of the TCO

    Diagnosis and Decision-Making in Telemedicine

    This article provides an analysis of the skills that health professionals and patients employ in reaching diagnosis and decision-making in telemedicine consultations. As governmental priorities continue to emphasize patient involvement in the management of their disease, there is an increasing need to accurately capture the provider–patient interactions in clinical encounters. Drawing on conversation analysis of 10 video-mediated consultations in 3 National Health Service settings in England, this study examines the interaction between patients, General Practitioner (GPs), nurses, and consultants during diagnosis and decision-making, with the aim to identify the range of skills that participants use in the process and capture the interprofessional communication and patient involvement in the diagnosis and decision-making phases of telemedicine consultations. The analysis shows that teleconsultations enhance collaborative working among professionals and enable GPs and nurses to develop their skills and actively participate in diagnosis and decision-making by contributing primary care–specific knowledge to the consultation. However, interprofessional interaction may result in limited patient involvement in decisionmaking. The findings of this study can be used to inform training programs in telemedicine that focus on the development of effective skills for professionals and the provision of information to patients

    The Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) K3 viral gene product effectively down-regulates cell surface MHC Class I. K3 is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that promotes K63-linked polyubiquitination of MHC Class I, providing the signal for clathrin mediated endocytosis. Endocytosis is followed by sorting into the intralumenal vesicles (ILVs) of multivesicular bodies (MVBs) and eventual delivery to lysosomes. The sorting of MHC Class I into MVBs requires many individual proteins of the four endosomal sorting complexes required for transport (ESCRTs). In HeLa cells expressing the KSHV K3 ubiquitin ligase, the effect of RNA interference-mediated depletion of individual proteins of the ESCRT-0 and ESCRT-I complexes and three ESCRT-III proteins showed that these are required to down-regulate MHC Class I. However, depletion of proteins of the ESCRT-II complex or of the ESCRT-III protein, VPS20/CHMP6, failed to prevent the loss of MHC Class I from the cell surface. Depletion of His domain phosphotyrosine phosphatase (HD-PTP) resulted in an increase in the cell surface concentration of MHC Class I in HeLa cells expressing the KSHV K3 ubiquitin ligase. Rescue experiments with wild type and mutant HD-PTP supported the conclusion that HD-PTP acts as an alternative to ESCRT-II and VPS20/CHMP6 as a link between the ESCRT-I and those ESCRT-III protein(s) necessary for ILV formation. Thus, the down-regulation of cell surface MHC Class I, polyubiquitinated by the KSHV K3 ubiquitin ligase, does not employ the canonical ESCRT pathway, but instead utilizes an alternative pathway in which HD-PTP replaces ESCRT-II and VPS20/CHMP6

    Inter-rater reliability of malaria parasite counts and comparison of methods

    BACKGROUND: The introduction of artemesinin-based treatment for falciparum malaria has led to a shift away from symptom-based diagnosis. Diagnosis may be achieved by using rapid non-microscopic diagnostic tests (RDTs), of which there are many available. Light microscopy, however, has a central role in parasite identification and quantification and remains the main method of parasite-based diagnosis in clinic and hospital settings and is necessary for monitoring the accuracy of RDTs. The World Health Organization has prepared a proficiency testing panel containing a range of malaria-positive blood samples of known parasitaemia, to be used for the assessment of commercially available malaria RDTs. Different blood film and counting methods may be used for this purpose, which raises questions regarding accuracy and reproducibility. A comparison was made of the established methods for parasitaemia estimation to determine which would give the least inter-rater and inter-method variation METHODS: Experienced malaria microscopists counted asexual parasitaemia on different slides using three methods; the thin film method using the total erythrocyte count, the thick film method using the total white cell count and the Earle and Perez method. All the slides were stained using Giemsa pH 7.2. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) models were used to find the inter-rater reliability for the different methods. The paired t-test was used to assess any systematic bias between the two methods, and a regression analysis was used to see if there was a changing bias with parasite count level. RESULTS: The thin blood film gave parasite counts around 30% higher than those obtained by the thick film and Earle and Perez methods, but exhibited a loss of sensitivity with low parasitaemia. The thick film and Earle and Perez methods showed little or no bias in counts between the two methods, however, estimated inter-rater reliability was slightly better for the thick film method. CONCLUSION: The thin film method gave results closer to the true parasite count but is not feasible at a parasitaemia below 500 parasites per microlitre.     Stellar models with Schwarzschild and non-Schwarzschild vacuum exteriors

    A striking characteristic of non-Schwarzschild vacuum exteriors is that they contain not only the total gravitational mass of the source, but also an {\it arbitrary} constant. In this work, we show that the constants appearing in the "temporal Schwarzschild", "spatial Schwarzschild" and "Reissner-Nordstr{\"o}m-like" exteriors are not arbitrary but are completely determined by star's parameters, like the equation of state and the gravitational potential. Consequently, in the braneworld scenario the gravitational field outside of a star is no longer determined by the total mass alone, but also depends on the details of the internal structure of the source. We show that the general relativistic upper bound on the gravitational potential M/R<4/9M/R < 4/9, for perfect fluid stars, is significantly increased in these exteriors. Namely, M/R<1/2M/R < 1/2, M/R<2/3M/R < 2/3 and M/R<1M/R < 1 for the temporal Schwarzschild, spatial Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstr{\"o}m-like exteriors, respectively. Regarding the surface gravitational redshift, we find that the general relativistic Schwarzschild exterior as well as the braneworld spatial Schwarzschild exterior lead to the same upper bound, viz., Z<2Z < 2. However, when the external spacetime is the temporal Schwarzschild metric or the Reissner-Nordstr{\"o}m-like exterior there is no such constraint: Z<Z < \infty. This infinite difference in the limiting value of ZZ is because for these exteriors the effective pressure at the surface is negative.     CD4+ T Cell Effects on CD8+ T Cell Location Defined Using Bioluminescence

    T lymphocytes of the CD8+ class are critical in delivering cytotoxic function and in controlling viral and intracellular infections. These cells are “helped” by T lymphocytes of the CD4+ class, which facilitate their activation, clonal expansion, full differentiation and the persistence of memory. In this study we investigated the impact of CD4+ T cells on the location of CD8+ T cells, using antibody-mediated CD4+ T cell depletion and imaging the antigen-driven redistribution of bioluminescent CD8+ T cells in living mice. We documented that CD4+ T cells influence the biodistribution of CD8+ T cells, favoring their localization to abdominal lymph nodes. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that this was associated with an increase in the expression of specific integrins. The presence of CD4+ T cells at the time of initial CD8+ T cell activation also influences their biodistribution in the memory phase. Based on these results, we propose the model that one of the functions of CD4+ T cell “help” is to program the homing potential of CD8+ T cells

    ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS AND THEIR ROLE IN EXTREME PRECIPITATION IN THE MIDWEST U.S.

    Two case studies are presented of atmospheric rivers (ARs) that produced heavy precipitation in the Midwest U.S. during March 2008 and October 2009. A third case study demonstrating an AR with normal precipitation in the Midwest is also included for comparison. The analyses used the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) data sets for identification of ARs and analysis. The study documents several key ingredients that contribute to differentiating between events of extreme precipitation and normal precipitation. The primary findings of this study are as follows 1) the induced flow due to the low-level/surface temperature anomaly plays an important role in transporting moisture from the Caribbean northward to the Midwest, 2) the induced wind field from a strong upper-level potential vorticity (PV) anomaly increases moisture flux from the Gulf and decreases static stability, which favors convective precipitation, and 3) heavy precipitation events are preceded approximately 9 hours by an increasing, positive moisture flux occurring across the northern Gulf Coast.http://archive.org/details/atmosphericriver1094532835Captain, United States Air ForceApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    First report of generalized face processing difficulties in möbius sequence.

    Reverse simulation models of facial expression recognition suggest that we recognize the emotions of others by running implicit motor programmes responsible for the production of that expression. Previous work has tested this theory by examining facial expression recognition in participants with Möbius sequence, a condition characterized by congenital bilateral facial paralysis. However, a mixed pattern of findings has emerged, and it has not yet been tested whether these individuals can imagine facial expressions, a process also hypothesized to be underpinned by proprioceptive feedback from the face. We investigated this issue by examining expression recognition and imagery in six participants with Möbius sequence, and also carried out tests assessing facial identity and object recognition, as well as basic visual processing. While five of the six participants presented with expression recognition impairments, only one was impaired at the imagery of facial expressions. Further, five participants presented with other difficulties in the recognition of facial identity or objects, or in lower-level visual processing. We discuss the implications of our findings for the reverse simulation model, and suggest that facial identity recognition impairments may be more severe in the condition than has previously been noted

    Memories of being injured and patients' care trajectory after physical trauma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The purpose of this study was to acquire a deeper understanding of patients' memories of being injured and the trajectory of care before, during and after their Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Interviews were conducted with eighteen informants who after physical trauma had been cared for in the ICU. The interviews were analyzed by using a phenomenological hermeneutical method.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The memories of injury during the trajectory of care are illustrated in a figure in which the injured informants have memories from five scenes; the scene of the accident, emergency unit, ICU, nursing ward and of coming home. Twelve subthemes were abstracted and four themes emerged; a surrealistic world, an injured body, care, and gratitude for life. After the accident, a "surrealistic world" appeared along with bad memories of being in a floating existence where plans had to be changed. This world was unfamiliar, sometimes including delusional and fragmentary memories from the ICU, and it was experienced as uncontrollable. They felt connected to an "injured body", experiencing bad memories from the ICU of being injured, from the nursing ward of simply enduring and of being in a No Man's Land when coming home; their lives had become limited. At the same time they were "connected to care" with good memories of receiving attention from others at the scene of the accident, being taken cared of at the emergency unit and cared for in the ICU. This care made them realise that people are responsible for each other, and they felt comforted but also vulnerable. Finally, they experienced "gratitude for life". This included good memories of being loved together with support from their families at the ICU, wanting to win life back at the nursing ward and acceptance when returning home. The support from their families made them realise that they fit in just as they are.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>When bad memories of a surrealistic world and of being injured are balanced by good ones of care and love with a gratitude for life, there are more possibilities to move on despite an uncertain future following the injury.</p
