The paper presents a generalized Poisson-Nernst-Planck model of an yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte developed from first principles of nonequilibrium thermodynamics which allows for spatial resolution of the space charge layer. It takes into account limitations in oxide ion concentrations due to the limited availability of oxygen vacancies. The electrolyte model is coupled with a reaction kinetic model describing the triple phase boundary with electron conducting lanthanum strontium manganite and gaseous phase oxygen. By comparing the outcome of numerical simulations based on different formulations of the kinetic equations with results of EIS and CV measurements we attempt to discern the existence of separate surface lattice sites for oxygen adatoms and O2- from the assumption of shared ones. Furthermore, we discern mass-action kinetics models from exponential kinetics models

Overview: State-of-the Art Commercial Membranes for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis

One promising way to store and distribute large amounts of renewable energy is water electrolysis, coupled with transport of hydrogen in the gas grid and storage in tanks and caverns. The intermittent availability of renewal energy makes it difficult to integrate it with established alkaline water electrolysis technology. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is promising, but limited by the necessity to use expensive platinum and iridium catalysts. The expected solution is anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis, which combines the use of cheap and abundant catalyst materials with the advantages of PEM water electrolysis, namely a low foot print, large operational capacity, and fast response to changing operating conditions. The key component for AEM water electrolysis is a cheap, stable, gas tight and highly hydroxide conductive polymeric AEM. Here we present target values and technical requirements for AEMs, discuss the chemical structures involved and the related degradation pathways, and give an overview over the most prominent and promising commercial AEMs (Fumatech Fumasep® FAA3, Tokuyama A201, Ionomr Aemion™, Dioxide materials Sustainion®, and membranes commercialized by Orion Polymer), and review their properties and performances of water electrolyzers using these membranes

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a rate-determining process in alkaline water electrolysis (AWE). Herein, we report a novel one-step oxidation-electrodeposition (OSOE) approach to generate core@shell nanoarrays-based AWE electrode with outstanding OER performances: an overpotential of 245 mV at 10 mA cm−2 (Tafel slope: 37 mV dec−1), and excellent stability under huge current densities. Moreover, the alkaline (AEL) cell equipped with NM-OSOE-23 anode recorded significant performance improvement of 200 mV lower voltage (2 A cm−1) compared with a similar cell used bare Ni mesh as an anode, which was contributed by notable enhancements of interface contact, anodic charge transfer, and mass transfer. These promising results are attributed to the constructed specific core@shell Ni@Fe-doped Ni(oxy)hydroxide nanoarray architecture on commercial nickel mesh. This study demonstrates this first reported OSOE can be commercialized to make highly efficient anodes enabling next-generation AWE

Characterization of Commercial Polymer–Carbon Composite Bipolar Plates Used in PEM Fuel Cells

    No full text
Bipolar plates represent a crucial component of the PEM fuel cell stack. Polymer–carbon composites are recognized as state-of-the-art materials for bipolar plate manufacturing, but their use involves a compromise between electrical and heat conductivity, mechanical strength and costs. Thus, all key parameters must be considered when selecting a suitable plate satisfying the demands of the desired application. However, data relevant to commercial materials for such selection are scarce in the open literature. To address this issue, 13 commercially available polymer–carbon composites are characterised in terms of the following parameters: through-plane conductivity, hydrogen permeability, mechanical strength, water uptake, density, water contact angle and chemical stability. None of the materials tested reached the DOE target for electrical conductivity, while five of the materials met the target for flexural strength. The overall best-performing material showed a conductivity value of 50.4 S·cm−1 and flexural strength of 40.1 MPa. The data collected provide important supporting information in selecting the materials most suitable for the desired application. In addition, the key parameters determined for each bipolar plate supply important input parameters for the mathematical modelling of fuel cells

This paper is focused on designing and characterization of embroidered electroacoustic transducer placed on the magnet. This type of transducer can be used as a feedback or notification element in an advanced smart textile system. Multiple transducer designs and threads were used in the experiment. Results from measuring of acoustic level have showed, that embroidered electroacoustic transducer can be used as a full-featured speaker for the feedback system. The results have showed the ability to play simple sounds and melodies through this electroacoustic transducer. This paper is focused on designing and characterization of embroidered electroacoustic transducer placed on the magnet.
