An Advanced, Three-Dimensional Plotting Library for Astronomy
We present a new, three-dimensional (3D) plotting library with advanced
features, and support for standard and enhanced display devices. The library -
S2PLOT - is written in C and can be used by C, C++ and FORTRAN programs on
GNU/Linux and Apple/OSX systems. S2PLOT draws objects in a 3D (x,y,z) Cartesian
space and the user interactively controls how this space is rendered at run
time. With a PGPLOT inspired interface, S2PLOT provides astronomers with
elegant techniques for displaying and exploring 3D data sets directly from
their program code, and the potential to use stereoscopic and dome display
devices. The S2PLOT architecture supports dynamic geometry and can be used to
plot time-evolving data sets, such as might be produced by simulation codes. In
this paper, we introduce S2PLOT to the astronomical community, describe its

The Detection and Characterization of cm Radio Continuum Emission from the Low-mass Protostar L1014-IRS
Observations by the Cores to Disk Legacy Team with the Spitzer Space
Telescope have identified a low luminosity, mid-infrared source within the
dense core, Lynds 1014, which was previously thought to harbor no internal
source. Followup near-infrared and submillimeter interferometric observations
have confirmed the protostellar nature of this source by detecting scattered
light from an outflow cavity and a weak molecular outflow. In this paper, we
report the detection of cm continuum emission with the VLA. The emission is
characterized by a quiescent, unresolved 90 uJy 6 cm source within 0.2" of the
Spitzer source. The spectral index of the quiescent component is between 6 cm and 3.6 cm. A factor of two increase in 6 cm
emission was detected during one epoch and circular polarization was marginally
detected at the level with Stokes {V/I} % . We have
searched for 22 GHz H2O maser emission toward L1014-IRS, but no masers were
detected during 7 epochs of observations between June 2004 and December 2006.
L1014-IRS appears to be a low-mass, accreting protostar which exhibits cm
emission from a thermal jet or a wind, with a variable non-thermal emission
component. The quiescent cm radio emission is noticeably above the correlation
of 3.6 cm and 6 cm luminosity versus bolometric luminosity, indicating more
radio emission than expected. We characterize the cm continuum emission in
terms of observations of other low-mass protostars, including updated
correlations of centimeter continuum emission with bolometric luminosity and
outflow force, and discuss the implications of recent larger distance estimates
on the physical attributes of the protostar and dense molecular core.Comment: 14 pages. Accepted for publication in Ap
On the Identification of High Mass Star Forming Regions using IRAS: Contamination by Low-Mass Protostars
We present the results of a survey of a small sample (14) of low-mass
protostars (L_IR < 10^3 Lsun) for 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission performed
using the ATNF Parkes radio telescope. No new masers were discovered. We find
that the lower luminosity limit for maser emission is near 10^3 Lsun, by
comparison of the sources in our sample with previously detected methanol maser
sources. We examine the IRAS properties of our sample and compare them with
sources previously observed for methanol maser emission, almost all of which
satisfy the Wood & Churchwell criterion for selecting candidate UCHII regions.
We find that about half of our sample satisfy this criterion, and in addition
almost all of this subgroup have integrated fluxes between 25 and 60 microns
that are similar to sources with detectable methanol maser emission. By
identifying a number of low-mass protostars in this work and from the
literature that satisfy the Wood & Churchwell criterion for candidate UCHII
regions, we show conclusively for the first time that the fainter flux end of
their sample is contaminated by lower-mass non-ionizing sources, confirming the

Evaluating an interactive acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) workshop delivered to trained therapists working with cancer patients in the United Kingdom: a mixed methods approach
Background
SURECAN (SUrvivorsâ Rehabilitation Evaluation after CANcer) is a multi-phase study developing and evaluating an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention integrated with exercise and work when highly valued (thus we called the intervention ACT+), for people who have completed treatment for cancer but who have low quality of life. We developed a training programme for therapists working in different psychological services to be delivered over 2â3âdays. Our aim was to evaluate the extent to which the training could improve therapistsâ knowledge and confidence to deliver ACT+ to cancer patients in a trial setting.
Methods
Three interactive workshops were delivered to 29 therapists from three clinical settings in London and in Sheffield. A mixed-methods approach was used. Questionnaires were designed to assess knowledge and confidence in using ACT+ with people who have low quality of life after cancer treatment. They were self-administered immediately prior to and after each workshop. Open text-based questions were used to elicit feedback about the workshops alongside a satisfaction scale. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of therapists (nâ=â12) to explore their views about the training more deeply, and how it might be optimised.
Results
Quantitative analysis showed that knowledge of ACT, as well as confidence in using the ACT+ intervention in this setting increased significantly after training (28.6 and 33.5% increase in the median score respectively). Qualitative analysis indicated that most therapists were satisfied with the content and structure of the programme, valued the rich resources provided and enjoyed the practice-based approach. Potential barriers/facilitators to participation in the trial and to the successful implementation of ACT+ were identified. For some therapists, delivering a manualised intervention, as well as supporting exercise- and work-related goals as non-specialists was seen as challenging. At the same time, therapists valued the opportunity to be involved in research, whilst training in a new therapy model.
Conclusions
Training can effectively improve the knowledge and confidence of therapists from different clinical backgrounds to deliver a modified ACT intervention to cancer patients in a trial setting
Do good health and material circumstances protect older people from the increased risk of death after bereavement?
This is an open access Article. Copyright @ 2012 The AuthorsAn increased risk of death in persons who have suffered spousal bereavement has been described in many populations. The impact of modifying factors, such as chronic disease and material circumstances, is less well understood. The authors followed 171,120 couples 60 years of age or older in a United Kingdom primary care database between 2005 and 2010 for an average of 4 years. A total of 26,646 (15.5%) couples experienced bereavement, with mean follow up after bereavement of 2 years. In a model adjusted for age, sex, comorbid conditions at baseline, material deprivation based on area of residence, season, and smoking status, the hazard ratio for mortality in the first year after bereavement was 1.25 (95% confidence interval: 1.18, 1.33). Further adjustment for changes in comorbid conditions throughout follow up did not alter the hazard ratio for bereavement (hazard ratio = 1.27, 95% confidence interval: 1.19, 1.35). The association was strongest in individuals with no significant chronic comorbid conditions throughout follow up (hazard ratio = 1.50, 95% confidence interval: 1.28, 1.77) and in more affluent couples (P = 0.035). In the first year after bereavement, the association between bereavement and death is not primarily mediated through worsening or new onset of chronic disease. In the paper âA new conformal FDTD for lossy thin panelsâ by M. R. Cabello et al., the appearance of spiky antiresonances in the simulation of the shielding properties of lossy thin-shell spherical cavities by FDTD, was categorised as spurious solutions. In this document, we briefly clarify this topic, and show that these solutions are not really spurious in the common interpretation of the term. Actually, they correspond to physical solutions, appearing due to lack of symmetry inherent to the staggered co-location nature of field components in FDTD
