    Assessing Oligopoly and Oligopsony Power in the U.S. Catfish Industry

    This paper addresses the issue of competition in the U.S. catfish industry. To this end, a conjectural variation oligopolistic model was developed. The model was estimated econometrically using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) procedure. Chi-square analysis implied that catfish processors do not exert market power over farmers or over consumers. The conjectural elasticity was estimated to be 0.073, the oligopoly power index 0.28, and the oligopsony power index 0.68, and none of these values were statistically significant.     Investigation of shock waves in the relativistic Riemann problem: A comparison of viscous fluid dynamics to kinetic theory

    We solve the relativistic Riemann problem in viscous matter using the relativistic Boltzmann equation and the relativistic causal dissipative fluid-dynamical approach of Israel and Stewart. Comparisons between these two approaches clarify and point out the regime of validity of second-order fluid dynamics in relativistic shock phenomena. The transition from ideal to viscous shocks is demonstrated by varying the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio η/s\eta/s.     Web Service Discovery in a Semantically Extended UDDI Registry: the Case of FUSION

    Service-oriented computing is being adopted at an unprecedented rate, making the effectiveness of automated service discovery an increasingly important challenge. UDDI has emerged as a de facto industry standard and fundamental building block within SOA infrastructures. Nevertheless, conventional UDDI registries lack means to provide unambiguous, semantically rich representations of Web service capabilities, and the logic inference power required for facilitating automated service discovery. To overcome this important limitation, a number of approaches have been proposed towards augmenting Web service discovery with semantics. This paper discusses the benefits of semantically extending Web service descriptions and UDDI registries, and presents an overview of the approach put forward in project FUSION, towards semantically-enhanced publication and discovery of services based on SAWSDL

    Identification of Alzheimer and vascular lesion thresholds for mixed dementia

    To explore the pathological substrates of mixed dementia, we performed a detailed analysis of lacunar and microvascular pathology in 156 autopsied, elderly individuals with various degrees of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Cognitive status was assessed prospectively using the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scale; neuropathological evaluation included Braak neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) and AĂź-protein deposition staging and bilateral semi-quantitative assessment of microvascular ischaemic pathology and lacunes; statistics included univariate and multiple regression models controlling for age, and receiver-operating characteristic analysis. Sensitivity analysis was performed in a randomized derivation sub-sample and tested in a validation sub-sample. White matter lacunes, periventricular and diffuse white matter demyelination and focal and diffuse cortical gliosis were not associated with cognition. Braak NFT, AĂź deposition, cortical microinfarcts (CMI) and thalamic and basal ganglia lacunes (TBGL) predicted 27% of CDR variability and 49% of the presence of dementia. Braak NFT, CMI and TBGL thresholds determined in a derivation sample yielded 0.88 sensitivity, 0.79 specificity and 0.85 correct classification rate for dementia in a validation sample. The same thresholds distinguished three groups of demented cases consistent with mixed dementia, pure vascular dementia and AD. These findings indicate that the clinical expression of the vascular component in mixed cases is highly dependent on lesion type and location as well as severity of concomitant AD-related pathology. Proposed thresholds for vascular and degenerative lesions predict the presence of dementia with great accuracy and provide a basis for distinguishing pure vascular dementia or AD from mixed case

    Extraction of shear viscosity in stationary states of relativistic particle systems

    Starting from a classical picture of shear viscosity we construct a stationary velocity gradient in a microscopic parton cascade. Employing the Navier-Stokes ansatz we extract the shear viscosity coefficient η\eta. For elastic isotropic scatterings we find an excellent agreement with the analytic values. This confirms the applicability of this method. Furthermore for both elastic and inelastic scatterings with pQCD based cross sections we extract the shear viscosity coefficient η\eta for a pure gluonic system and find a good agreement with already published calculations.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

    Regional Distribution of Neurofibrillary Tangles and Senile Plaques in the Cerebral Cortex of Elderly Patients: A Quantitative Evaluation of a One-Year Autopsy Population from a Geriatric Hospital

    Detailed analyses of the neuropathologic changes in the cerebral cortex of elderly individuals and Alzheimer's disease patients have demonstrated that certain components of the neocortical and hippocampal circuits are likely to be selectively vulnerable. Based on the distribution of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and senile plaques, it has been proposed that a global cortico-cortical disconnection leads to the loss of integrated functions observed in Alzheimer's disease. In order to investigate the distribution of lesions associated with aging as well as with the earliest symptoms of senile dementia, we performed a quantitative neuropathologic avaluation of a large series of elderly patients representing the entire autopsy population for the year 1989 from a geriatric hospital. Among the 145 cases quantitatively assessed, there were 102 nondemented patients, 33 patients presenting clinically with globally intact intellectual function but early signs of impairment of specific cognitive functions, and 10 cases with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type. All of the cases had NFTs in layer II of the entorhinal cortex, regardless of their clinical diagnosis, and most cases had some NFTs in the CA1 field of the hippocampus. Severe pathologic changes within the inferior temporal neocortex were observed only in the demented cases. The extent of amyloid deposition was not correlated with the clinical diagnosis and seemed to be present in the neocortical areas earlier than in the hippocampal formation. Also, several cases contained NFTs without amyloid deposition, but amyloid never occurred without NFTs. These results suggests that involvement of certain structures within the hippocampal formation is a consistent feature of aging. Thus, involvement of the hippocampal formation may be a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for the clinical expression of dementia, which is likely to be more closely related to the progressive degeneration of select neuronal populations in the neocorte

    Sleep and psychological factors are associated with meeting discharge criteria to return to sport following ACL reconstruction in athletes

    INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine if sleep quality and psychological factors were associated with time to meet the discharge criteria to return to sport (RTS) following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) among athletes experiencing better quality of sleep and psychological responses returning faster to full activity. METHOD: A cohort-study design included 89 athletes following ACL-R. Each participant completed a battery of questionnaires at 6 different time points: within 3 days of injury occurrence and at post-surgery (1.5m, 3m, 4.5m, 6m and when discharge criteria were met). Assessment included sleep quality and quantity, symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, psychological readiness to RTS and fear of re-injury. The primary outcome was the time needed to meet all discharge criteria to RTS. RESULTS: Sleep parameters and psychological factors were not associated with time to meet the discharge criteria to RTS. However, athletes that had low anxiety and insomnia scores at baseline and better sleep quality at 3m, 4.5m, 6m and at discharge were more adherent to the rehabilitation program and more likely to meet the RTS discharge criteria OR 1.2 (95% CI 1.0-1.34), 1.3 (95% CI 1.1, 1.7) and 2.0 (95% CI 1.1-3.4) respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Sleep quality and psychological factors were not associated with time to meet the discharge criteria to RTS but impacted whether athletes adhered and completed their rehabilitation program or not. Monitoring sleep quality and psychological factors of athletes before and following ACL-R surgery is important to identify athletes who could have difficulties in adhering to and completing their rehabilitation program to RTS
