    Age effects in identifying and localising dichotic stimuli: a corpus callosum deficit?

    In the present study, dichotic listening performance of 31 older adults was compared with performance of 25 younger adults under free and focussed attention conditions. In addition to an age-related general decrease in performance, we observed in the focussed attention condition increased asymmetry in the elderly group: the decrease of recall performance was stronger for the left ear (LE) than for the right ear (RE), while the increase of localisation errors was greater for the RE than for the LE. Identifying and localising digits appear to be different processes mediated predominantly by the left and right hemisphere, respectively. Since age-related reduced performance is strongest for the ear ipsilateral to the hemisphere dominant to that particular function, these findings may be ascribed to decline of corpus callosum functioning resulting in decreased interhemispheric interaction rather than to a selective decline of right hemisphere functions

    Attention modulates hemispheric differences in functional connectivity: Evidence from MEG recordings

    The present study examined intrahemispheric functional connectivity during rest and dichotic listening in 8 male and 9 female healthy young adults measured with magnetoencephalography (MEG). Generalized synchronization within the separate hemispheres was estimated by means of the synchronization likelihood that is sensitive to linear as well as non-linear coupling of MEG signals. We found higher functional intrahemispheric connectivity of frontal and temporal areas within the right as compared to the left hemisphere in the lower and higher theta band during rest, and in the lower theta band during dichotic listening. In addition, higher synchronization in the lower theta band correlated with better task performance. In the upper alpha band, hemispheric differences in intrahemispheric connectivity of the frontal regions were found to be modulated by focused attention instructions.     WASP-4 Is Accelerating toward the Earth

    The orbital period of the hot Jupiter WASP-4b appears to be decreasing at a rate of −8.64 ± 1.26 ms yr⁻Âč, based on transit-timing measurements spanning 12 yr. Proposed explanations for the period change include tidal orbital decay, apsidal precession, and acceleration of the system along the line of sight. To investigate further, we performed new radial-velocity measurements and speckle imaging of WASP-4. The radial-velocity data show that the system is accelerating toward the Sun at a rate of −0.0422 ± 0.0028 m s⁻Âč day⁻Âč. The associated Doppler effect should cause the apparent period to shrink at a rate of −5.94 ± 0.39 ms yr⁻Âč, comparable to the observed rate. Thus, the observed change in the transit period is mostly or entirely produced by the line-of-sight acceleration of the system. This acceleration is probably caused by a wide-orbiting companion of mass 10–300 M_(Jup) and orbital distance 10–100 au, based on the magnitude of the radial-velocity trend and the nondetection of any companion in the speckle images. We expect that the orbital periods of one out of three hot Jupiters will change at rates similar to WASP-4b, based on the hot-Jupiter companion statistics of Knutson et al. Continued radial-velocity monitoring of hot Jupiters is therefore essential to distinguish the effects of tidal orbital decay or apsidal precession from line-of-sight acceleration

    When Interval Analysis Helps Inter-Block Backtracking

    International audienceInter-block backtracking (IBB) computes all the solutions of sparse systems of non-linear equations over the reals. This algorithm, introduced in 1998 by Bliek et al., handles a system of equations previously decomposed into a set of (small) k × k sub-systems, called blocks. Partial solutions are computed in the different blocks and combined together to obtain the set of global solutions. When solutions inside blocks are computed with interval-based techniques, IBB can be viewed as a new interval-based algorithm for solving decomposed equation systems. Previous implementations used Ilog Solver and its IlcInterval library. The fact that this interval-based solver was more or less a black box implied several strong limitations. The new results described in this paper come from the integration of IBB with the interval-based library developed by the second author. This new library allows IBB to become reliable (no solution is lost) while still gaining several orders of magnitude w.r.t. solving the whole system. We compare several variants of IBB on a sample of benchmarks, which allows us to better understand the behavior of IBB. The main conclusion is that the use of an interval Newton operator inside blocks has the most positive impact on the robustness and performance of IBB. This modifies the influence of other features, such as intelligent backtracking and filtering strategies

    Optimizing flushing parameters in intracoronary optical coherence tomography: an in vivo swine study

    Intracoronary optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI), requires the displacement of blood for clear visualization of the artery wall. Radiographic contrast agents are highly effective at displacing blood however, may increase the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy. Flushing media viscosity, flow rate, and flush duration influence the efficiency of blood displacement necessary for obtaining diagnostic quality OFDI images. The aim of this work was to determine the optimal flushing parameters necessary to reliably perform intracoronary OFDI while reducing the volume of administered radiographic contrast, and assess the influence of flushing media choice on vessel wall measurements. 144 OFDI pullbacks were acquired together with synchronized EKG and intracoronary pressure wire recordings in three swine. OFDI images were graded on diagnostic quality and quantitative comparisons of flushing efficiency and intracoronary cross-sectional area with and without precise refractive index calibration were performed. Flushing media with higher viscosities resulted in rapid and efficient blood displacement. Media with lower viscosities resulted in increased blood-media transition zones, reducing the pullback length of diagnostic quality images obtained. Flushing efficiency was found to increase with increases in flow rate and duration. Calculations of lumen area using different flushing media were significantly different, varying up to 23 % (p < 0.0001). This error was eliminated with careful refractive index calibration. Flushing media viscosity, flow rate, and flush duration influence the efficiency of blood displacement necessary for obtaining diagnostic quality OFDI images. For patients with sensitivity to contrast, to reduce the risk of contrast induced nephrotoxicity we recommend that intracoronary OFDI be conducted with flushing solutions containing little or no radiographic contrast. In addition, our findings show that careful refractive index compensation should be performed, taking into account the specific contrast agent used, in order to obtain accurate intravascular OFDI measurements.Merck & Co., Inc.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Grant Numbers R00CA134920, R01HL076398, R01HL093717

    Area-Independent Effects of Water-Retaining Features on Intertidal Biodiversity on Eco-Engineered Seawalls in the Tropics

    Over the last decade there has been a global effort to eco-engineer urban artificial shorelines with the aim of increasing their biodiversity and extending their conservation value. One of the most common and viable eco-engineering approaches on seawalls is to use enhancement features that increase habitat structural complexity, including concrete tiles molded with complex designs and precast “flowerpots” that create artificial rock pools. Increases in species diversity in pits and pools due to microhabitat conditions (water retention, shade, protection from waves, and/or biotic refugia) are often reported, but these results can be confounded by differences in the surface area sampled. In this study, we fabricated three tile types (n = 10): covered tile (grooved tile with a cover to retain water), uncovered tile (same grooved tile but without a cover) and granite control. We tested the effects of these tile types on species richness (S), total individual abundance (N), and community composition. All tiles were installed at 0.5 m above chart datum along seawalls surrounding two island sites (Pulau Hantu and Kusu Island) south of Singapore mainland. The colonizing assemblages were sampled after 8 months. Consistent with previous studies, mean S was significantly greater on covered tiles compared to the uncovered and granite tiles. While it is implied in much of the eco-engineering literature that this pattern results from greater niche availability allotted by microhabitat conditions, we further investigated whether there was an underlying species-individual relationship to determine whether increases in S could have simply resulted from covered tiles supporting greater N (i.e., increasing the probability of detecting more species despite a constant area). The species-individual relationship was positive, suggesting that multiple mechanisms are at play, and that biodiversity enhancements may in some instances operate simply by increasing the abundance of individuals, even when microhabitat availability is unchanged. This finding underscores the importance of testing mechanisms in eco-engineering studies and highlights ongoing mechanistic uncertainties that should be addressed to inform the design of more biodiverse seawalls and urban marine environments
