Optical absorption of non-interacting tight-binding electrons in a Peierls-distorted chain at half band-filling
In this first of three articles on the optical absorption of electrons in
half-filled Peierls-distorted chains we present analytical results for
non-interacting tight-binding electrons. We carefully derive explicit
expressions for the current operator, the dipole transition matrix elements,
and the optical absorption for electrons with a cosine dispersion relation of
band width and dimerization parameter . New correction
(``''-)terms to the current operator are identified. A broad band-to-band
transition is found in the frequency range whose shape
is determined by the joint density of states for the upper and lower Peierls
subbands and the strong momentum dependence of the transition matrix elements.Comment: 17 pages REVTEX 3.0, 2 postscript figures; hardcopy versions before

Pattern equivariant functions and cohomology
The cohomology of a tiling or a point pattern has originally been defined via
the construction of the hull or the groupoid associated with the tiling or the
pattern. Here we present a construction which is more direct and therefore
easier accessible. It is based on generalizing the notion of equivariance from
lattices to point patterns of finite local complexity.Comment: 8 pages including 2 figure
A model for the interpretation of biofouling
The formation of biofilms on heat exchange surfaces
was studied using water with Pseudomonas fluorescens
as a contaminant and also a mixture of these bacteria
and kaolin particles. In every case increasing the
fluid velocity resulted in a decrease in the final
amount of deposit and in the deposition rate . The
effect of the fluid velocity was interpreted using a
mathematical model and it was found that cell
adhesion and reproduction were the fundamental
processes controlling the deposition rate .
The presence of inorganic particles in the
deposit enhanced the biofilm growth rate . This result
was explained by the differences in the structure of
the fouling layers
Some observations on asymmetrical separation in thermal diffusion columns
Data have been obtained in steady-state batch operated thermogravitational separation columns using different binary mixtures to test the theory recently published by Morgado et al. The experimental results confirm that separations by thermal diffusion are asymmetrical except when the initial concentration is 0.5 and that the asymmetry is larger as the initial concentration deviates from 0.5 and as the separation potential increases
Weak gauge principle and electric charge quantization
Starting from a weak gauge principle we give a new and critical revision of
the argument leading to charge quantization on arbitrary spacetimes. The main
differences of our approach with respect to previous works appear on spacetimes
with non trivial torsion elements on its second integral cohomology group. We
show that in these spacetimes there can be topologically non-trivial
configurations of charged fields which do not imply charge quantization.
However, the existence of a non-exact electromagnetic field always implies the
quantization of charges. Another consequence of the theory for spacetimes with
torsion is the fact that it gives rise to two natural quantization units that
could be identified with the electric quantization unit (realized inside the
quarks) and with the electron charge. In this framework the color charge can
have a topological origin, with the number of colors being related to the order
of the torsion subgroup. Finally, we discuss the possibility that the
quantization of charge may be due to a weak non-exact component of the
electromagnetic field extended over cosmological scales.Comment: Latex2e, 24 pages, no figure
Nonsymmetrical separations in thermal diffusion columns
The influence of the feed composition upon the actual degrees of separation attained at the top and bottom sections of a thermogravitational column is discussed using the classical phenomenological theory of Furry, Jones, and Onsager. It is shown that, except for a feed composition of C 0 = 0.5 (mass fraction), the separation profile is nonsymmetric, i.e., the separations in the top and bottom sections of the column are nonsymmetric with respect to the feed composition, the asymmetry increasing as the feed composition moves away from C 0 = 0.5. An equation for the determination of the optimum feed location as a function of the feed composition is derived
Sensemaking and Success in the Transition from Community Colleges to University IS/CS/CE Programs
Increasing the enrollment of women, minority, and other underrepresented populations in undergraduate information systems and computing programs is an important social issue. We explore ways of attracting and retaining community college transfer students—an important source of underrepresented students —by examining their sensemaking efforts as they transition to four-year universities. We conducted a qualitative study to test sensemaking theory and develop recommendations for retaining community college transfer students in undergraduate information systems, computer science, and computer engineering programs
Geometric combinatorial algebras: cyclohedron and simplex
In this paper we report on results of our investigation into the algebraic
structure supported by the combinatorial geometry of the cyclohedron. Our new
graded algebra structures lie between two well known Hopf algebras: the
Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra of permutations and the Loday-Ronco algebra of
binary trees. Connecting algebra maps arise from a new generalization of the
Tonks projection from the permutohedron to the associahedron, which we discover
via the viewpoint of the graph associahedra of Carr and Devadoss. At the same
time that viewpoint allows exciting geometrical insights into the
multiplicative structure of the algebras involved. Extending the Tonks
projection also reveals a new graded algebra structure on the simplices.
Finally this latter is extended to a new graded Hopf algebra (one-sided) with
basis all the faces of the simplices.Comment: 23 figures, new expanded section about Hopf algebra of simplices,

Formation of Episodic Magnetically Driven Radiatively Cooled Plasma Jets in the Laboratory
We report on experiments in which magnetically driven radiatively cooled
plasma jets were produced by a 1 MA, 250 ns current pulse on the MAGPIE pulsed
power facility. The jets were driven by the pressure of a toroidal magnetic
field in a ''magnetic tower'' jet configuration. This scenario is characterized
by the formation of a magnetically collimated plasma jet on the axis of a
magnetic ''bubble'', confined by the ambient medium. The use of a radial
metallic foil instead of the radial wire arrays employed in our previous work
allows for the generation of episodic magnetic tower outflows which emerge
periodically on timescales of ~30 ns. The subsequent magnetic bubbles propagate
with velocities reaching ~300 km/s and interact with previous eruptions leading
to the formation of shocks.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space
