On the background of growing environmental problems in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea area, co-operation between the adjacent states of both sea areas has intensified during the last decades. The article gives an overview over existing international environment agreements regarding the North Sea and the Baltic Sea areas and evaluates successes and failures of these agreements. Since the results indicate that international environment co-operation in the case of the Baltic Sea has been more successful compared to the North Sea area, possible reasons for these differences are finally discussed.Internationale Umweltpolitik, Umweltabkommen, Ostsee, Nordsee

Internationale Umweltkooperation im Fall von Ostsee und Nordsee – was erklärt die Unterschiede?

Vor dem Hintergrund wachsender Umweltprobleme im Bereich der Nordsee und der Ostsee ist die Zusammenarbeit der Anrainerstaaten dieser beiden Meere in den zurückliegenden Jahrzehnten enger geworden. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird ein Überblick über die bestehenden internationalen Umweltabkommen im Bereich von Nordsee und Ostsee gegeben und der Erfolg bzw. Misserfolg dieser Vereinbarungen überprüft. Da vieles darauf hindeutet, dass die Zusammenarbeit der Ostseeanrainerstaaten erfolreicher war als die der Anrainerstaaten der Nordsee, wird abschließend nach den Gründen dieser Unterschiede gefragt.On the background of growing environmental problems in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea area, co-operation between the adjacent states of both sea areas has intensified during the last decades.
