    Do it Right or Not at All: A Longitudinal Evaluation of a Conflict Managment System Implementation

    We analyzed an eight-year multi-source longitudinal data set that followed a healthcare system in the Eastern United States as it implemented a major conflict management initiative to encourage line managers to consistently perform Personal Management Interviews (or PMIs) with their employees. PMIs are interviews held between two individuals, designed to prevent or quickly resolve interpersonal problems before they escalate to formal grievances. This initiative provided us a unique opportunity to empirically test key predictions of Integrated Conflict Management System (or ICMS) theory. Analyzing survey and personnel file data from 5,449 individuals from 2003 to 2010, we found that employees whose managers provided high-quality interviews perceived significantly higher participative work climates and had lower turnover rates. However, retention was worse when managers provided poor-quality interviews than when they conducted no interviews at all. Together these findings highlight the critical role that line mangers play in the success of conflict management systems

    Increased concentration of an apparently identical cellular protein in cells transformed by either Abelson murine leukemia virus or other transforming agents

    Abelson murine leukemia virus (A-MuLV)-transformed cells, simian virus 40 (SV40)-transformed cells, and chemically transformed cells all have increased levels of a 50,000-molecular-weight host cell protein. The protein was detected with sera raised to the A-MuLV-transformed and chemically transformed cells and was tightly bound to T-antigen in extracts of SV40-transformed cells. Partial protease digests showed that the proteins from all three sources were indistinguishable. The three proteins were phosphorylated in cells, and the linkage of phosphate to the A-MuLV-associated P50 was to a serine residue. By immunofluorescence methods, P50-related protein was found on the surface of both normal lymphoid cells and A-MuLV-transformed lymphoid cells, but cell fractionation showed that the majority of P50 was free in the cytoplasm of the transformed cells. Immunofluorescence also showed that P50 was found in granules in the cytoplasm of both untransformed and SV40-transformed fibroblasts. Other cells gave indistinct patterns. Cocapping experiments showed that the A-MuLV-specified P120 protein is weakly associated with the surface P50-related protein of lymphoid cells, but no association of P120 and P50 could be demonstrated by immunoprecipitation methods. Although a monoclonal antiserum to P50 was used in many of these studies, the identity of the bulk P50 protein with the molecules that are reactive at the cell surface requires further study

    Modelling circumstellar discs with 3D radiation hydrodynamics

    We present results from combining a grid-based radiative transfer code with a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code to produce a flexible system for modelling radiation hydrodynamics. We use a benchmark model of a circumstellar disc to determine a robust method for constructing a gridded density distribution from SPH particles. The benchmark disc is then used to determine the accuracy of the radiative transfer results. We find that the SED and the temperature distribution within the disc are sensitive to the representation of the disc inner edge, which depends critically on both the grid and SPH resolution. The code is then used to model a circumstellar disc around a T-Tauri star. As the disc adjusts towards equilibrium vertical motions in the disc are induced resulting in scale height enhancements which intercept radiation from the central star. Vertical transport of radiation enables these perturbations to influence the mid-plane temperature of the disc. The vertical motions decay over time and the disc ultimately reaches a state of simultaneous hydrostatic and radiative equilibrium.Comment: MNRAS accepted; 15 pages; 17 figures, 4 in colou

    A Keck HIRES Doppler Search for Planets Orbiting Metal-Poor Dwarfs. II. On the Frequency of Giant Planets in the Metal-Poor Regime

    We present an analysis of three years of precision radial velocity measurements of 160 metal-poor stars observed with HIRES on the Keck 1 telescope. We report on variability and long-term velocity trends for each star in our sample. We identify several long-term, low-amplitude radial-velocity variables worthy of follow-up with direct imaging techniques. We place lower limits on the detectable companion mass as a function of orbital period. Our survey would have detected, with a 99.5% confidence level, over 95% of all companions on low-eccentricity orbits with velocity semi-amplitude K > 100 m/s, or M_p*sin(i) > 3.0 M_JUP*(P/yr)^(1/3), for orbital periods P< 3 yr. None of the stars in our sample exhibits radial-velocity variations compatible with the presence of Jovian planets with periods shorter than the survey duration. The resulting average frequency of gas giants orbiting metal-poor dwarfs with -2.0 < [Fe/H] < -0.6 is f_p<0.67% (at the 1-sigma confidence level). We examine the implications of this null result in the context of the observed correlation between the rate of occurrence of giant planets and the metallicity of their main-sequence solar-type stellar hosts. By combining our dataset with the Fischer & Valenti (2005) uniform sample, we confirm that the likelihood of a star to harbor a planet more massive than Jupiter within 2 AU is a steeply rising function of the host's metallicity. However, the data for stars with -1.0 < [Fe/H] < 0.0 are compatible, in a statistical sense, with a constant occurrence rate f_p~1%. Our results can usefully inform theoretical studies of the process of giant planet formation across two orders of magnitude in metallicity.Comment: 59 pages, 7 tables, 8 figures.     This design project will aim to provide archery hunters with a platform to simulate shooting at string jumping deer. String jumping refers to a spooked deer hearing the snap of a bow string and instintivly ducking up to ten inches. This often results in wounded or missed deer. We will design and build a control system that uses the sound of a bow string as a trigger to operate a mechanical target system. A sound sensor will mimic a deer’s hearing in close range hunting and then send a signal to the mechanical system to replicate the dropping motion of the spooked deer. If successful, the system will allow hunters to improve their marksmanship and minimize missed or wounded deer that result in lost time, money, and resources

    Capabilities, Configurations, and Leveraging Strategies: an Investigation of the Leveraging Process of Resource Orchestration

    Resource orchestration research has focused primarily on aspects associated with the structuring and bundling of resources to form capabilities. However, questions remain regarding the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of the leveraging process, particularly as it relates to the types of capabilities needed to form capability configurations that are coordinated and deployed. Further, principles of configuration theory have yet to be applied to the resource-based view of the firm. Herein, I propose a study to (1) conceptualize and operationalize specific firm-level capabilities, (2) draw upon configuration theory to explain how these capabilities are coordinated into capability configurations in preparation for the deployment of specific leveraging strategies, and (3) examine the relationship between leveraging strategy and firm performance. I propose a typology of capability configuration that varies in the type of capability configurations coordinated based on different alternatives of leveraging strategies. Using data from the National Basketball Association, I find that strategies mediate the relationship between capabilities and performance. This study utilizes the theoretical tenants of the resource-based view of the firm to extend our understanding of capabilities, capability configurations, and leveraging strategies

    We describe a high-precision Doppler search for giant planets orbiting a well-defined sample of metal-poor dwarfs in the field. This experiment constitutes a fundamental test of theoretical predictions which will help discriminate between proposed giant planet formation and migration models.
