The Spectrum of Angiographic Findings in Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Kidney

The spectrum of angiographic finding in 20 patients with transitional cell carcinomas of the kidney is described. In 15 of 20 patients (75%), prospective diagnosis of transitional cell carcinomas were made because of a combination of the angiographic findings; tumour vessels, tumour stain, prominent pelviureteric arteries and arterial encasement. In 4 patients with negative angiograms the lesions were relatively small in size and were situated within the renal parenchyma, primarily involving the calyces. The use of pharmacoangiographic agents such as epine-phrine and priscoline improved the angiographic visualization of transitional cell carcinomas of the kidney. For the past several years angiography has had a central role in the evaluation of patients with hematuria and renal masses 1 . 5,6,7,8. Although the use of diagnostic ultrasound and renal puncture have eliminated angiography from the diagnosis of renal cysts, most renal masses which are solid or which have equivocal findings at ultrasound still undergo angiography. At the same time, the decreasing use of retrograde urography has resulted in more frequent angiography in patients with unilateral nonfunctioning kidneys. Transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis are an important cause of both hematuria and non-functioning kidneys. We have therefore reviewed our material to reassess the angiographic abnormalities caused by the transitional cell carcinomas and the overall accuracy of the angiography in the diagnosis of these lesions.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73228/1/j.1440-1673.1977.tb03191.x.pd

ArteFill® Permanent Injectable for Soft Tissue Augmentation: II. Indications and Applications

Patients ask for procedures with long-lasting effects. ArteFill is the first permanent injectable approved in 2006 by the FDA for nasolabial folds. It consists of cleaned microspheres of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) suspended in bovine collagen. Over the development period of 20 years most of its side effects have been eliminated to achieve the same safety standard as today’s hyaluronic acid products. A 5-year follow-up study in U.S. clinical trial patients has shown the same wrinkle improvement as seen at 6 months. Long-term follow-up in European Artecoll patients has shown successful wrinkle correction lasting up to 15 years. A wide variety of off-label indications and applications have been developed that help the physician meet the individual needs of his/her patients. Serious complications after ArteFill injections, such as granuloma formation, have not been reported due to the reduction of PMMA microspheres smaller than 20 μm to less than 1% “by the number.” Minor technique-related side effects, however, may occur during the initial learning curve. Patient and physician satisfaction with ArteFill has been shown to be greater than 90%

Hyper-precarious lives : Migrants, work and forced labour in the Global North

This paper unpacks the contested inter-connections between neoliberal work and welfare regimes, asylum and immigration controls, and the exploitation of migrant workers. The concept of precarity is explored as a way of understanding intensifying and insecure post-Fordist work in late capitalism. Migrants are centrally implicated in highly precarious work experiences at the bottom end of labour markets in Global North countries, including becoming trapped in forced labour. Building on existing research on the working experiences of migrants in the Global North, the main part of the article considers three questions. First, what is precarity and how does the concept relate to working lives? Second, how might we understand the causes of extreme forms of migrant labour exploitation in precarious lifeworlds? Third, how can we adequately theorize these particular experiences using the conceptual tools of forced labour, slavery, unfreedom and precarity? We use the concept of ‘hyper-precarity’ alongside notions of a ‘continuum of unfreedom’ as a way of furthering human geographical inquiry into the intersections between various terrains of social action and conceptual debate concerning migrants’ precarious working experiences

Governing immigrants and citizenship regimes: the case of France, 1950s–1990s

Does sustained and increasingly transnational immigration weaken the national character of citizenship regimes? This paper addresses this issue by examining French responses to immigration over a 40-year period. In spite of the changing character of immigration and changing state strategies, all governments throughout this period have sought to maintain the national character by making full access to rights contingent on one's conformity to national values and moralities. As the government made accessing rights dependent on conformity to national norms, the legitimacy of immigrant activists seeking to expand their rights has depended on their abilities to conform to the rules of the national political game. Resisting marginalization therefore requires the assimilation of the immigrants into nationally specific political cultures, which contributes to reinforcing the national character of citizenship regimes. By examining the particular case of France, the paper aims to show how top-down and bottom-up processes by states and activists work in different ways to keep the nation at the center of citizenship regimes in spite of the ongoing and very real challenges presented by transnationalism and globalization

Some technique-dependent patterns of collateral flow during cerebral angiography

During selective transfemoral catheter cerebral angiography, anastomoses between external carotid branches and the vertebral artery, between the vertebral and deep or ascending cervical arteries, and between the middle meningeal and ophthalmic arteries can be demonstrated fairly frequently in patients with no known vascular abnormalities. One can occasionally show bidirectional filling of these anastomoses depending on the vessel injected. Visualization of these anastomoses occurs to a variable degree and is sometimes entirely technique-dependent, reflecting a transient increase in the intraluminal pressure during the injection of contrast medium.-Thus, demonstration of extracranial collateral arterial flow during cerebral angiography should not necessarily be interpreted as an abnormal phenomenon, such as may be seen with arterial occlusive disease, vascular malformation, or a very vascular tumor. Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/46671/1/234_2004_Article_BF00341594.pd
