Robust coding of flow-field parameters by axo-axonal gap junctions between fly visual interneurons
Complex flight maneuvers require a sophisticated system to exploit the optic flow resulting from moving images of the environment projected onto the retina. In the fly's visual course control center, the lobula plate, 10 so-called vertical system (VS) cells are thought to match, with their complex receptive fields, the optic flow resulting from rotation around different body axes. However, signals of single VS cells are unreliable indicators of such optic flow parameters in the context of their noisy, texture-dependent input from local motion measurements. Here we propose an alternative encoding scheme based on network simulations of biophysically realistic compartmental models of VS cells. The simulations incorporate recent data about the highly selective connectivity between VS cells consisting of an electrical axo-axonal coupling between adjacent cells and a reciprocal inhibition between the most distant cells. We find that this particular wiring performs a linear interpolation between the output signals of VS cells, leading to a robust representation of the axis of rotation even in the presence of textureless patches of the visual surround
A stochastic network with mobile users in heavy traffic
We consider a stochastic network with mobile users in a heavy-traffic regime.
We derive the scaling limit of the multi-dimensional queue length process and
prove a form of spatial state space collapse. The proof exploits a recent
result by Lambert and Simatos which provides a general principle to establish
scaling limits of regenerative processes based on the convergence of their
excursions. We also prove weak convergence of the sequences of stationary joint
queue length distributions and stationary sojourn times.Comment: Final version accepted for publication in Queueing Systems, Theory

Annual Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program Report for the Fort St. Vrain Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (2005)
This report presents the results of the 2003 Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program conducted in accordance with 10 CFR 72.44 for the Fort St. Vrain Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation. A description of the facility and the monitoring program is provided. The results of monitoring the predominant radiation exposure pathway, direct radiation exposure, indicate the facility operation has not contributed to any increase in the estimated maximum potential dose commitment to the general public
Asymptotic Expansions for the Conditional Sojourn Time Distribution in the -PS Queue
We consider the queue with processor sharing. We study the
conditional sojourn time distribution, conditioned on the customer's service
requirement, in various asymptotic limits. These include large time and/or
large service request, and heavy traffic, where the arrival rate is only
slightly less than the service rate. The asymptotic formulas relate to, and
extend, some results of Morrison \cite{MO} and Flatto \cite{FL}.Comment: 30 pages, 3 figures and 1 tabl

Mechanism of action of PD-1 receptor/ligand targeted cancer immunotherapy
Immunotherapy targeting the Programmed Death (PD-1) receptor/ligand (L) "checkpoint" rapidly gains ground in the treatment of many cancer types. To increase treatment scope and efficacy, predictive biomarkers and rational selection of co-treatments are required. To meet these demands, we must understand PD-1 function in detail. We here outline recent insights into the regulation of the CD8(+) T cell response by PD-1. The prevailing view has been that blockade of PD-1/ligand (L) interaction "reinvigorates" cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) that were rendered dysfunctional in the tumor microenvironment (TME). However, this review stresses that tumors continuously communicate with adjacent draining lymph nodes (LNs) and that the PD-1 checkpoint also operates during T cell priming. We clarify the role of the PD-(L)1 system at the T cell/DC interface, where it regulates T cell receptor (TCR) signaling and CD28 costimulation and thus controls activation of tumor-specific T cells. We also highlight the importance of CD4(+) T cell help during priming, which allows DCs to provide other costimulatory and cytokine signals required for optimal CTL differentiation and likely avoidance of a dysfunctional state. Therefore, we pose that PD-(L)1 blockade should exploit LN function and be combined with "help" signals to optimize CTL efficacy.Tumorimmunolog
Deformation of the Fermi surface in the extended Hubbard model
The deformation of the Fermi surface induced by Coulomb interactions is
investigated in the t-t'-Hubbard model. The interplay of the local U and
extended V interactions is analyzed. It is found that exchange interactions V
enhance small anisotropies producing deformations of the Fermi surface which
break the point group symmetry of the square lattice at the Van Hove filling.
This Pomeranchuck instability competes with ferromagnetism and is suppressed at
a critical value of U(V). The interaction V renormalizes the t' parameter to
smaller values what favours nesting. It also induces changes on the topology of
the Fermi surface which can go from hole to electron-like what may explain
recent ARPES experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 4 ps figure
An unidentified TeV source in the vicinity of Cygnus OB2
Deep observation (∼113 hrs) of the Cygnus region at TeV energies using the HEGRA stereoscopic system of air Čerenkov telescopes has serendipitously revealed a signal positionally inside the core of the OB association Cygnus OB2, at the edge of the 95% error circle of the EGRET source 3EG J2033+4118, and ∼0.5° north of Cyg X-3. The source centre of gravity is RA αJ2000: 20hr32m07s± 9.2stats±2.2syss, Dec δJ2000: +41°30′30″2.0stat±0.4′sys. The source is steady, has a post-trial significance of +4.6σ, indication for extension with radius 5.6′ at the ∼3σ level, and has a differential power-law flux with hard photon index of - 1.9 ± 0.3stat ± 0.3sys. The integral flux above 1 TeV amounts ∼3% that of the Crab. No counterpart for the TeV source at other wavelengths is presently identified, and its extension would disfavour an exclusive pulsar or AGN origin. If associated with Cygnus OB2, this dense concentration of young, massive stars provides an environment conducive to multi-TeV particle acceleration and likely subsequent interaction with a nearby gas cloud. Alternatively, one could envisage γ-ray production via a jet-driven termination shock.F. A. Aharonian, ... G. P. Rowell, ... [et al
