    Salinity Induced Changes in the Leaf Anatomy of the Mangrove Avicennia Marina Along the Anthropogenically Stressed Tropical Creek

    The mangrove Avicennia marina is a dominant mangrove along the anthropogenically stressed tropical Thane creek, west coast of India. Leaf anatomy of the mangrove along the Thane creek, was assessed in relation to stationwise and seasonwise variations in salinity. It was noticed that under the conditions of higher salinity, Avicennia marina showed increased thickness of hypodermal water storage tissue in the leaf (for conservation of water) and produced taller salt extruding glands at the lower epidermis to eliminate more salt; whereas, the thickness of the photosynthetic mesophyllic tissue significantly reduced. At lower salinity or with reduction in salinity in monsoon, contrary to above occurred. These changes probably explain the stunted growth of Avicennia marina in high salinity environment and its vigorous growth at lower salinity

    A CASE CONTROL STUDY OF TILKALKA (SESAMUM PASTE) MADHUSARPIVARTI IN THE MANAGEMENT OF VIDRADHI BHEDANA AND VISTRAVANA (I & D)

    The diseases Vidradhi (abscess) is a common ailment irritating humankind and incapacitate the sufferer for his routine work. The primary aim of the treatment was to give an effective and safe surgical approach to this perplexing problem. The healing of wound formed after I & D still remains a major problem to the surgeon as well as to the patient. Though systemic action of drugs are in prevalence, satisfactory local management still remains a pipe dream. Routinely in modern surgical practice H2O2 (Hydrogen peroxide) and Betadine is commonly used for cleaning and debridement of I&D wound. H2O2 produces heat when come in contact with tissues and disturb the newly formed granulation tissue which decreases wound healing rate. An attempt was made at the proper understanding of the historical aspect of Vidradhi Chikitsa (treatment), its etiopathogenesis, methodology of wound healing after I & D both in the light of Ayurvedic and modern knowledge. So present study reveals efficacy of Tilkalka (sesamum paste) madhusarpi Varti w.s.r. to Vidradhi after its Bhedan and Vistravana (I&D) procedure. The case control study was conducted on which randomly selected 2 patients and divided in 2 groups 1st is control group treated with H2O2 and Betadine, 2nd is trial group treated with Tilkalka madhusarpi Varti. The clinical assessment was done on the basis of grading criteria with basic symptomology of Vidradhi after I&D like pain, local temp, discharge, colour and smell. Then mean scores levels of these symptoms before and after the treatment of 2 groups were done & final conclusion was obtained

    Nonzero-sum Stochastic Games

    This paper treats of stochastic games. We focus on nonzero-sum games and provide a detailed survey of selected recent results. In Section 1, we consider stochastic Markov games. A correlation of strategies of the players, involving ``public signals'', is described, and a correlated equilibrium theorem proved recently by Nowak and Raghavan for discounted stochastic games with general state space is presented. We also report an extension of this result to a class of undiscounted stochastic games, satisfying some uniform ergodicity condition. Stopping games are related to stochastic Markov games. In Section 2, we describe a version of Dynkin's game related to observation of a Markov process with random assignment mechanism of states to the players. Some recent contributions of the second author in this area are reported. The paper also contains a brief overview of the theory of nonzero-sum stochastic games and stopping games which is very far from being complete

    Effect of surgical experience and spine subspecialty on the reliability of the {AO} Spine Upper Cervical Injury Classification System

    OBJECTIVE The objective of this paper was to determine the interobserver reliability and intraobserver reproducibility of the AO Spine Upper Cervical Injury Classification System based on surgeon experience (< 5 years, 5–10 years, 10–20 years, and > 20 years) and surgical subspecialty (orthopedic spine surgery, neurosurgery, and "other" surgery). METHODS A total of 11,601 assessments of upper cervical spine injuries were evaluated based on the AO Spine Upper Cervical Injury Classification System. Reliability and reproducibility scores were obtained twice, with a 3-week time interval. Descriptive statistics were utilized to examine the percentage of accurately classified injuries, and Pearson’s chi-square or Fisher’s exact test was used to screen for potentially relevant differences between study participants. Kappa coefficients (κ) determined the interobserver reliability and intraobserver reproducibility. RESULTS The intraobserver reproducibility was substantial for surgeon experience level (< 5 years: 0.74 vs 5–10 years: 0.69 vs 10–20 years: 0.69 vs > 20 years: 0.70) and surgical subspecialty (orthopedic spine: 0.71 vs neurosurgery: 0.69 vs other: 0.68). Furthermore, the interobserver reliability was substantial for all surgical experience groups on assessment 1 (< 5 years: 0.67 vs 5–10 years: 0.62 vs 10–20 years: 0.61 vs > 20 years: 0.62), and only surgeons with > 20 years of experience did not have substantial reliability on assessment 2 (< 5 years: 0.62 vs 5–10 years: 0.61 vs 10–20 years: 0.61 vs > 20 years: 0.59). Orthopedic spine surgeons and neurosurgeons had substantial intraobserver reproducibility on both assessment 1 (0.64 vs 0.63) and assessment 2 (0.62 vs 0.63), while other surgeons had moderate reliability on assessment 1 (0.43) and fair reliability on assessment 2 (0.36). CONCLUSIONS The international reliability and reproducibility scores for the AO Spine Upper Cervical Injury Classification System demonstrated substantial intraobserver reproducibility and interobserver reliability regardless of surgical experience and spine subspecialty. These results support the global application of this classification system

    'Statins in retinal disease'

    Statins are known for their blood cholesterol-lowering effect and are widely used in patients with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Research over the past three decades shows that statins have diverse effects on different pathophysiological pathways involved in angiogenesis, inflammation, apoptosis, and anti-oxidation, leading to new therapeutic options. Recently, statins have attracted considerable attention for their immunomodulatory effect. Since immune reactivity has been implicated in a number of retinal diseases, such as uveitis, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy, there is now a growing body of evidence supporting the beneficial effects of statins in these retinopathies. This review evaluates the relationship between statins and the pathophysiological basis of these diseases, focusing on their potential role in treatment. A PubMed database search and literature review was conducted. Among AMD patients, there is inconsistent evidence regarding protection against development of early AMD or delaying disease progression; though they have been found to reduce the risk of developing choroidal neovascular membranes (CNV). In patients with retinal vein occlusion, there was no evidence to support a therapeutic benefit or a protective role with statins. In patients with diabetic retinopathy, statins demonstrate a reduction in disease progression and improved resolution of diabetic macular oedema (DMO). Among patients with uveitis, statins have a protective effect by reducing the likelihood of uveitis development

    Mössbauer analysis of compositional tuning of magnetic exchange interactions in high entropy alloys

    We measured the change in the average hyperfine field strength of several high entropy alloys in relation to small compositional deviations from the equiatomic alloy, FeCoNiCuMn. Mössbauer spectra of four psuedo-binary systems, in which Mn content is increased and another element was decreased in equal measure, reveal several discrete peaks in the hyperfine field distribution that show evidence of the discrete exchange interactions between magnetic elements in the alloy. A simple linear regression modelling the perturbation of the average hyperfine field when the composition is altered calculates the contribution of each atom to the overall average. The average hyperfine field is linear with Tc, so these values allow us to estimate Tc for alloys with more complex compositional variation within the window of linearity (<24% Mn based on other alloys). The results were confirmed experimentally by calculating Tc of two new alloys, Fe19Co20Ni19Cu19Mn23 and Fe19Co20Ni19Cu20Mn22
