    Energy-sensitive GaSb/AlAsSb separate absorption and multiplication avalanche photodiodes for X-Ray and gamma-ray detection

    Demonstrated are antimony‐based (Sb‐based) separate absorption and multiplication avalanche photodiodes (SAM‐APDs) for X‐ray and gamma‐ray detection, which are composed of GaSb absorbers and large bandgap AlAsSb multiplication regions in order to enhance the probability of stopping high‐energy photons while drastically suppressing the minority carrier diffusion. Well‐defined X‐ray and gamma‐ray photopeaks are observed under exposure to 241Am radioactive sources, demonstrating the desirable energy‐sensitive detector performance. Spectroscopic characterizations show a significant improvement of measured energy resolution due to reduced high‐peak electric field in the absorbers and suppressed nonradiative recombination on surfaces. Additionally, the GaSb/AlAsSb SAM‐APDs clearly exhibit energy response linearity up to 59.5 keV with a minimum full‐width half‐maximum of 1.283 keV. A further analysis of the spectroscopic measurement suggests that the device performance is intrinsically limited by the noise from the readout electronics rather than that from the photodiodes. This study provides a first understanding of Sb‐based energy‐sensitive SAM‐APDs and paves the way to achieving efficient detection of high‐energy photons for X‐ray and gamma‐ray spectroscopy

    Assessing awareness in severe Alzheimer’s disease

    There is an urgent need to understand the nature of awareness in people with severe Alzheimer’s disease (AD) to ensure effective person-centered care. Objective biomarkers of awareness validated in other clinical groups (e.g., anesthesia, minimally conscious states) offer an opportunity to investigate awareness in people with severe AD. In this article we demonstrate the feasibility of using Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with EEG, event related potentials (ERPs) and fMRI to assess awareness in severe AD. TMS-EEG was performed in six healthy older controls and three people with severe AD. The perturbational complexity index (PCIST) was calculated as a measure of capacity for conscious awareness. People with severe AD demonstrated a PCIST around or below the threshold for consciousness, suggesting reduced capacity for consciousness. ERPs were recorded during a visual perception paradigm. In response to viewing faces, two patients with severe AD provisionally demonstrated similar visual awareness negativity to healthy controls. Using a validated fMRI movie-viewing task, independent component analysis in two healthy controls and one patient with severe AD revealed activation in auditory, visual and fronto-parietal networks. Activation patterns in fronto-parietal networks did not significantly correlate between the patient and controls, suggesting potential differences in conscious awareness and engagement with the movie. Although methodological issues remain, these results demonstrate the feasibility of using objective measures of awareness in severe AD. We raise a number of challenges and research questions that should be addressed using these biomarkers of awareness in future studies to improve understanding and care for people with severe AD

    2+1 Dimensional Georgi-Glashow Instantons in Weyl Gauge

    Semiclassical instanton solutions in the 3D SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model are transformed into the Weyl gauge. This illustrates the tunneling interpretation of these instantons and provides a smooth regularization of the singular unitary gauge. The 3D Georgi-Glashow model has both instanton and sphaleron solutions, in contrast to 3D Yang-Mills theory which has neither, and 4D Yang-Mills theory which has instantons but no sphaleron, and 4D electroweak theory which has a sphaleron but no instantons.     Significant suppression of surface leakage in GaSb/AlAsSb heterostructure with Al2O3 passivation

    This work develops a (NH4)2S/Al2O3 passivation technique for photodiode-based GaSb/AlAsSb heterostructure. Surface-sulfurated GaSb/AlAsSb heterostructure mesas show a significant suppression of reversed-bias dark current by 4–5 orders of magnitude after they are further passivated by Al2O3 layers. So the mesa sidewalls treated with (NH4)2S/Al2O3 layers can effectively inhibit the shunt path of dark carriers. The activation energies for both bulk and surface components are extracted from temperature-dependent current–voltage characteristics, which suggest that the bulk characteristics remain unchanged, while Fermi-level pinning at surfaces is alleviated. Additionally, temperature coefficients of the breakdown voltage are extracted, confirming that the breakdown process is confined entirely in the large bandgap AlAsSb regions. This study shows that the implementation of (NH4)2S/Al2O3 passivation can lead to room temperature GaSb-based photodiodes and GaSb/AlAsSb-based avalanche photodiodes for highly efficient photodetection

    Flexible aggregation in multiple attribute decision making: Application to the Kuranda Range Road Upgrade

    The conventional method of aggregating the satisfaction of transport projects with respect to multiple attributes is commonly some variant of Simple Additive Weighting (SAW), which involves the sum of products of standardized outcomes of projects with respect to attributes and attribute importance weights. It is suggested that alternative forms of aggregation might be more useful, in particular, the Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operator introduced by Yager (1988). Attribute importance weights and satisfaction of attributes by projects may be aggregated prior to aggregation via an OWA operator. In this case OWA operator weights may be based on the "attitudinal character of the decision maker expressed in terms of the degree of "orness and "andness of the aggregation. A well-known approach is maximum entropy aggregation, in which weights are derived to be as "even (or as minimally dispersed) as a possible subject to satisfying a given "orness or "andness constraint. Recently, aggregation processes have been proposed by Larsen (199920022003) which have several desirable properties and also may be considered as alternative forms of aggregation. An example is given relating to the Kuranda Range Road upgrade (Queensland, Australia) which is limited by grade, poor overtaking opportunities, poor horizontal alignment, and other constraints, and the road is expected to become increasingly congested over the next few years.     Influence of Compensating Defect Formation on the Doping Efficiency and Thermoelectric Properties of Cu_(2-y)Se_(1–x)Br_x

    The superionic conductor Cu_(2−δ)Se has been shown to be a promising thermoelectric at higher temperatures because of very low lattice thermal conductivities, attributed to the liquid-like mobility of copper ions in the superionic phase. In this work, we present the potential of copper selenide to achieve a high figure of merit at room temperature, if the intrinsically high hole carrier concentration can be reduced. Using bromine as a dopant, we show that reducing the charge carrier concentration in Cu_(2−δ)Se is in fact possible. Furthermore, we provide profound insight into the complex defect chemistry of bromine doped Cu_(2−δ)Se via various analytical methods and investigate the consequential influences on the thermoelectric transport properties. Here, we show, for the first time, the effect of copper vacancy formation as compensating defects when moving the Fermi level closer to the valence band edge. These compensating defects provide an explanation for the often seen doping inefficiencies in thermoelectrics via defect chemistry and guide further progress in the development of new thermoelectric materials

    Modes of Foreign Entry under Asymmetric Information about Potential Technology Spillovers

    This paper studies the effect of technology spillovers on the entry decision of a multinational enterprise into a foreign market. Two alternative entry modes for a foreign direct investment are considered: Greenfield investment versus acquisition. We find that with quantity competition a spillover makes acquisitions less attractive, while with price competition acquisitions become more attractive. Asymmetric information about potential spillovers always reduces the number of acquisitions independently of whether the host country or the entrant has private information. Interestingly, we find that asymmetric information always hurts the entrant, while it sometimes is in favor of the host country

    Faecal Matrix Metalloprotease-9 Is a More Sensitive Marker For Diagnosing Pouchitis Than Faecal Calprotectin – Results From a Pilot Study

    Background. Potential non-invasive markers of pouchitis would have a great deal of significance within clinical practice. This study is aimed at assessing the diagnostic accuracy of faecal calprotectin and matrix metalloprotease-9 as potential markers in patients both with and without pouchitis. Patients and methods. Stool and blood samples were collected from 33 ileal pouch-anal anastomosis patients before a follow-up pouchoscopy. Biopsy samples were taken for histological purposes. The presence of cuffitis and stenosis was evaluated with an endoscopy. Calprotectin and matrix metalloprotease-9 were quantified with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results. Pouchitis was detected in 30.3% of the patients. The levels of faecal calprotectin and matrix metalloprotease-9 increased significantly in patients with pouchitis. The sensitivity and specificity of matrix metalloprotease-9 was higher than that of faecal calprotectin. Only matrix metalloprotease-9 correlated significantly with the severity of pouchitis. Conclusions. Faecal matrix metalloprotease-9 has a high specificity in the diagnosis of pouchitis
