    The commercial crisis of 1847

    Get PDF
This study attempts to provide a descriptive and analytical account of the origins of the British Commercial Crisis of 1847. The approach adopted is as follows: An introductory chapter outlines the main questions to be studied and provides a brief narrative account of the development of the crisis. Subsequent chapters examine the development of the crisis through individual sectors of the economy and by way of certain key economic variables. Chapters II to VI concentrate on aspects of the railway investment boom, aggregate income and consumption, and the experience of four major industries - house-building, coal-mining, and iron and cotton goods manufacture. Chapter VII looks at money and banking aspects of the crisis and deals especially with the role of the Bank of England. It also considers other parts of the banking system as well as some aspects of railway investment not discussed in earlier chapters. Questions of trade and the balance of payments are examined in Chapter VIII. The chapter also considers the immediate causes of failure among mercantile houses during the crisis of 1847. The final chapter summarizes the principal conclusions contained in the preceding chapters

A Forest Census in Lyon County, Iowa

The northwest corner of Iowa has comparatively few native trees because of the xerophytic conditions which prevail there. The rainfall of this part of the state is the least in Iowa, at times going as low as eighteen inches for the year, and in exposed regions, the forest trees have been unable to obtain a footing. The native trees are nearly all found along the streams or in protected valleys. A good illustration of this is in Centennial Township in the southwestern corner of Lyon County, where the Big Sioux River flows in a westerly direction for several miles at the foot of a series of high bluffs. The north face of these bluffs is heavily timbered, and is the subject of this paper

    Meteor Mountain

One of the greatest natural curiosities in the world, though very little known, is Meteor Mountain, which is located about forty miles southeast of the town of Flagstaff, Arizona, and about ten miles south of the town of Sunshine, Arizona, that is, it is located in the north central part of the state. It is said by the men of the United States Geological Survey to be probably the most mysterious geological feature of the United States, lacking, as it does, all parallel anywhere in the world, and its exact cause being held in doubt by many geologists

In 1910 the writer was at work in Lincoln County, South Dakota, and had his attention called one morning to a curious piece of metal that had just been dug up by one of his neighbors. The find was apparently an old coin, but no one in that region could identify it. It was sent to the Smithsonian Institution and there identified as a coin of Septimius Severus, Emperor of Rome, A. D. 193 to 211. Some account of this Roman Emperor will be of interest in this connection

Monitoring of Rat Colonies for Antibodies to CAR Bacillus

    Get PDF
The cilia associated respiratory (CAR) bacillus is a respiratory pathogenic bacterium of rats and other species of animal. We determined by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibudies t0 CAR bacillus antigen in sera from 20 colonies of rats. Six out of 10 Mycoplasma pulmoms ELISA positive experimental colonies contained CAR bacillus seropositive rats, comprising 26 out of 45 (58 %) samples. CAR bacillus infection was not diagnosed by ELISA in 183 samples from 10 M. pulmonis free SPF-rat breeding colonies
