    Crystal Structure and Magnetism of the Linear-Chain Copper Oxides Sr5Pb3-xBixCuO12

    The title quasi-1D copper oxides (0=< x =<0.4) were investigated by neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies. Polyhedral CuO4 units in the compounds were found to comprise linear-chains at inter-chain distance of approximately 10 A. The parent chain compound (x = 0), however, shows less anisotropic magnetic behavior above 2 K, although it is of substantially antiferromagnetic (mu_{eff}= 1.85 mu_{B} and Theta_{W} = -46.4 K) spin-chain system. A magnetic cusp gradually appears at about 100 K in T vs chi with the Bi substitution. The cusp (x = 0.4) is fairly characterized by and therefore suggests the spin gap nature at Delta/k_{B} ~ 80 K. The chain compounds hold electrically insulating in the composition range.Comment: To be published in PR

    Simple Front End Electronics for Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers

    A simple circuit for the presentation of the signals from Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) to standard existing digitization electronics is described. The circuit is based on "off-the-shelf" discrete components. An optimization of the values of specific components is required to match the aspects of the MRPCs for the given application. This simple circuit is an attractive option for the initial signal processing for MRPC prototyping and bench- or beam-testing efforts, as well as for final implementations of small-area Time-of-Flight systems with existing data acquisition systems.Comment: submitted to Nucl.     Magnetic Properties of (VO)_2P_2O_7 from Frustrated Interchain Coupling

    Neutron-scattering experiments on (VO)_2P_2O_7 reveal both a gapped magnon dispersion and an unexpected, low-lying second mode. The proximity and intensity of these modes suggest a frustrated coupling between the alternating spin chains. We deduce the minimal model containing such a frustration, and show that it gives an excellent account of the magnon dispersion, static susceptibility and electron spin resonance absorption. We consider two-magnon states which bind due to frustration, and demonstrate that these may provide a consistent explanation for the second mode.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 6 figures, compressed from first versio

    Thermodynamic Density Matrix renormalization Group Study of the Magnetic Susceptibility of Half-integer Quantum Spin Chains

    It is shown that White's density matrix renormalization group technique can be adapted to obtain thermodynamic quantities. As an illustration, the magnetic susceptibility of Heisenberg S=1/2 and S=3/2 spin chains are computed. A careful finite size analysis is made to determine the range of temperatures where the results are reliable. For the S=1/2 chain, the comparison with the exact Bethe ansatz curve shows an agreement within 1% down to T=0.05J.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. To be published in PR

    Comment on piNN Coupling from High Precision np Charge Exchange at 162 MeV

    In this updated and expanded version of our delayed Comment we show that the np backward cross section, as presented by the Uppsala group, is seriously flawed (more than 25 sd.). The main reason is the incorrect normalization of the data. We show also that their extrapolation method, used to determine the charged piNN coupling constant, is a factor of about 10 less accurate than claimed by Ericson et al. The large extrapolation error makes the determination of the coupling constant by the Uppsala group totally uninteresting.Comment: 5 pages, latex2e with a4wide.sty.     Te-and Zn-Doped InSb Crystals Grown in Microgravity

    In 2002, within the SUBSA (Solidification Using a Baffle in Sealed Ampoules) investigation, seven doped InSb crystals were grown in microgravity at the International Space Station. The key goals of the SUBSA investigation are: (a) to clarify the origin of the melt convection in space laboratories; (b) to reduce melt convection to the level which allows reproducible diffusion-controlled segregation; (e) to explore the submerged baffle process and liquid encapsulation in microgravity. 30 crystal growth experiments were conducted in the ground unit, to optimize the design of flight ampoules and to test the transparent SUBSA furnace developed by TecMasters Inc. The specially designed furnace, allowed observation of the crystal growth process (melting, seeding, motion of the solid-liquid interface, etc.). In the summer of 2002, eight crystal growth experiments were conducted in the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) facility at the ISS. Four Te-doped (k = 0.5) and three Zn-doped (k2.9) crystals were grown on undoped seeds. In one experiment, we were not able to seed and grow. The seven grown crystals were sectioned and analyzed using SIMS. The design of the SUBSA ampoules, the segregation data and the video images obtained during the SUBSA flight experiments will be presented and discussed

UK television cook Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's TV programmes offer fertile ground not only for thinking about television personalities as lifestyle experts and moral entrepreneurs, but also for thinking about how the meanings and uses of their television image are inflected by genre. In this article we explore how the shift from the lifestyled downshifting narrative of the River Cottage series to the 'campaigning culinary documentary' Hugh's Chicken Run exposes issues of celebrity, class and ethics. While both series are concerned with ethical consumption, they work in different ways to reveal a distinction between 'ethical' and 'unethical' consumption practices and positions - positions that are inevitably classed

    On the basis of periodic boundary conditions we study perturbatively a large N asymptotics (N is the number of rungs) for the ground state energy density and gas parameter of a spin ladder with slightly destroyed rung-dimerization. Exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder is treated as the reference model. Explicit perturbative formulas are obtained for three special classes of spin ladders.Comment: 4 page
