[1] Waves with frequencies in the vicinity of the proton cyclotron frequency and its harmonics are commonly observed from the Fast Auroral Snapshot spacecraft when traversing regions of auroral particle acceleration. In areas of upward current, largeamplitude electromagnetic waves with frequencies within 5% of the local proton gyrofrequency p and its harmonics are often observed where upstreaming ion beams exist. These waves have electric field (E 1 ) and magnetic field (B 1 ) amplitudes of up to 1 V m À1 and 2 nT with the ratio E 1 /B 1 as small as c. The waves occur in the low-altitude portion of the primary auroral acceleration potential, where plasma densities are 1 cm À3 . It is shown how these waves grow through inverse Landau resonance with a cold field-aligned electron beam superimposed on an accelerated and magnetically mirrored plasma sheet electron component in the absence of any significant plasma densities at energies below $100 eV. Significantly, the drift velocity of the cold beam (v oeb ) is several times larger than its thermal velocity v eb , and it is this feature that allows the wave to become electromagnetic at cyclotron harmonics while simultaneously giving rise to broadband electrostatic emissions spanning the first few cyclotron harmonics as is observed
Solving ill-posed bilevel programs
This paper deals with ill-posed bilevel programs, i.e., problems admitting multiple lower-level solutions for some upper-level parameters. Many publications have been devoted to the standard optimistic case of this problem, where the difficulty is essentially moved from the objective function to the feasible set. This new problem is simpler but there is no guaranty to obtain local optimal solutions for the original optimistic problem by this process. Considering the intrinsic non-convexity of bilevel programs, computing local optimal solutions is the best one can hope to get in most cases. To achieve this goal, we start by establishing an equivalence between the original optimistic problem an a certain set-valued optimization problem. Next, we develop optimality conditions for the latter problem and show that they generalize all the results currently known in the literature on optimistic bilevel optimization. Our approach is then extended to multiobjective bilevel optimization, and completely new results are derived for problems with vector-valued upper- and lower-level objective functions. Numerical implementations of the results of this paper are provided on some examples, in order to demonstrate how the original optimistic problem can be solved in practice, by means of a special set-valued optimization problem

Differential wedging of vertebral body and intervertebral disc in thoracic and lumbar spine in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis – A cross sectional study in 150 patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hueter-Volkmann's law regarding growth modulation suggests that increased pressure on the end plate of bone retards the growth (Hueter) and conversely, reduced pressure accelerates the growth (Volkmann). Literature described the same principle in Rat-tail model. Human spine and its deformity i.e. scoliosis has also same kind of pattern during the growth period which causes wedging in disc or vertebral body.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This cross sectional study in 150 patients of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis was done to evaluate vertebral body and disc wedging in scoliosis and to compare the extent of differential wedging of body and disc, in thoracic and lumbar area. We measured wedging of vertebral bodies and discs, along with two adjacent vertebrae and disc, above and below the apex and evaluated them according to severity of curve (curve < 30° and curve > 30°) to find the relationship of vertebral body or disc wedging with scoliosis in thoracic and lumbar spine. We also compared the wedging and rotations of vertebrae.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In both thoracic and lumbar curves, we found that greater the degree of scoliosis, greater the wedging in both disc and body and the degree of wedging was more at apex supporting the theory of growth retardation in stress concentration area. However, the degree of wedging in vertebral body is more than the disc in thoracic spine while the wedging was more in disc than body in lumbar spine. On comparing the wedging with the rotation, we did not find any significant relationship suggesting that it has no relation with rotation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>From our study, we can conclude that wedging in disc and body are increasing with progression on scoliosis and maximum at apex; however there is differential wedging of body and disc, in thoracic and lumbar area, that is vertebral body wedging is more profound in thoracic area while disc wedging is more profound in lumbar area which possibly form 'vicious cycle' by asymmetric loading to spine for the progression of curve.</p
Localization of Secondary Metabolites in Marine Invertebrates: Contribution of MALDI MSI for the Study of Saponins in Cuvierian Tubules of H. forskali
BACKGROUND: Several species of sea cucumbers of the family Holothuriidae possess a particular mechanical defense system called the Cuvierian tubules (Ct). It is also a chemical defense system as triterpene glycosides (saponins) appear to be particularly concentrated in Ct. In the present study, the precise localization of saponins in the Ct of Holothuria forskali is investigated. Classical histochemical labeling using lectin was firstly performed but did not generate any conclusive results. Thus, MALDI mass spectrometry Imaging (MALDI-MSI) was directly applied and completed by statistical multivariate tests. A comparison between the tubules of relaxed and stressed animals was realized. RESULTS: These analyses allowed the detection of three groups of ions, corresponding to the isomeric saponins of the tubules. Saponins detected at m/z 1287 and 1303 were the most abundant and were apparently localized in the connective tissue of the tubules of both relaxed and stressed individuals. Saponins at m/z 1125 and 1141 were detected in lower amount and were present in tissues of relaxed animals. Finally, saponin ions at 1433, 1449, 1463 and 1479 were observed in some Ct of stressed holothuroids in the outer part of the connective tissue. The saponin group m/z 14xx seems therefore to be stress-specific and could originate from modifications of the saponins with m/z of 11xx. CONCLUSIONS: All the results taken together indicate a complex chemical defense mechanism with, for a single organ, different sets of saponins originating from different cell populations and presenting different responses to stress. The present study also reflects that MALDI-MSI is a valuable tool for chemical ecology studies in which specific chemical signalling molecules like allelochemicals or pheromones have to be tracked. This report represents one of the very first studies using these tools to provide a functional and ecological understanding of the role of natural products from marine invertebrates
Structural Integration in Language and Music: Evidence for a Shared System.
In this study, we investigate whether language and music share cognitive resources for structural processing. We
report an experiment that used sung materials and manipulated linguistic complexity (subject-extracted relative
clauses, object-extracted relative clauses) and musical complexity (in-key critical note, out-of-key critical note,
auditory anomaly on the critical note involving a loudness increase). The auditory-anomaly manipulation was
included in order to test whether the difference between in-key and out-of-key conditions might be due to any salient,
unexpected acoustic event. The critical dependent measure involved comprehension accuracies to questions
about the propositional content of the sentences asked at the end of each trial. The results revealed an interaction
between linguistic and musical complexity such that the difference between the subject- and object-extracted relative
clause conditions was larger in the out-of-key condition than in the in-key and auditory-anomaly conditions.
These results provide evidence for an overlap in structural processing between language and music

Full field electroretinogram in autism spectrum disorder
Purpose
To explore early findings that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have reduced scotopic ERG b-wave amplitudes.
Methods
Dark adapted (DA) ERGs were acquired to a range of flash strengths, (-4.0 to 2.3 log phot cd.s.m-2), including and extending the ISCEV standard, from two subject groups: (ASD) N=11 and (Control) N=15 for DA and N=14 for light adapted (LA) ERGs who were matched for mean age and range. Naka-Rushton curves were fitted to DA b-wave amplitude growth over the first limb (-4.0 to -1.0 log phot cd.s.m-2). The derived parameters (Vmax, Km and n) were compared between groups. Scotopic 15 Hz flicker ERGs (14.93Hz) were recorded to 10 flash strengths presented in ascending order from -3.0 to 0.5 log Td.s to assess the slow and fast rod pathways respectively. LA ERGs were acquired to a range of flash strengths, (-0.5 to 1.0 log phot cd.s.m-2). Photopic 30 Hz, flicker ERGs, oscillatory potentials (OPs) and the responses to prolonged 120 ms ON- OFF stimuli were also recorded.
Results
For some individuals the DA b-wave amplitudes fell below the control 5th centile of the controls with up to four ASD participants (36%) at the 1.5 log phot cd.s.m-2 flash strength and two (18%) ASD participants at the lower -2 log phot cd.s.m-2 flash strength. However, across the thirteen flash strengths there were no significant group differences for b-wave amplitude’s growth (repeated measures ANOVA p=0.83). Nor were there any significant differences between the groups for the Naka-Rushton parameters (p>0.09). No group differences were observed in the 15Hz scotopic flicker phase or amplitude (p>0.1), DA ERG a- wave amplitude or time to peak (p>26). The DA b-wave time to peak at 0.5 log phot cd.s.m-2 were longer in the ASD group (corrected p=0.04). The single ISCEV LA 0.5 log phot cd.s.m-2 (p0.08) to the single flash stimuli although there was a significant interaction between group and flash strength for the b-wave amplitude (corrected p=0.006). The prolonged 120 ms ON-responses were smaller in the ASD group (corrected p=0.003), but the OFF response amplitude (p>0.6) and ON and OFF times to peaks (p>0.4) were similar between groups. The LA OPs showed an earlier bifurcation of OP2 in the younger ASD participants, however no other differences were apparent in the OPs or 30Hz flicker waveforms.
Conclusion
Some ASD individuals show subnormal DA ERG b-wave amplitudes. Under LA conditions the b-wave is reduced across the ASD group along with the ON response of the ERG. These exploratory findings, suggest there is altered cone-ON bipolar signalling in ASD
The Disk Wind in the Young Binaries and the Origin of the Cyclic Activity of Young Stars
We present results of numerical modeling of the cyclic brightness modulation
in the young binary systems with the eccentric orbits and low-mass secondary
components. Brightness variations of the primary is due to the periodical
extinction variations on the line-of-sight caused by the disk wind of the
secondary and a common envelope it produces. A matter distribution in the
envelope has been calculated in the ballistic approach. Calculations showed
that for the young binaries with the elliptic orbits parameters of the
photometric minima (their depth, duration and the shape of light curves) depend
not only on the disk wind parameters and an inclination of the binary orbit to
the line-of-sight but also on the longitude of the periastron. A modulation of
the scattered radiation of the common envelope with a phase of the orbital
period has been investigated in the single scattering approach. It is shown
that an amplitude of the modulation is maximal when the system is seen edge-on
and has also a non-zero value in the binaries observed pole-on. Possible
applications of the theory to the young stellar objects are discussed. In
particular, an attention is payed to a resemblance of the light curves in some
models with light curves of the objects suspected as candidates to FUORs.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted by Astronomy Letter
Visual perceptual load induces inattentional deafness
In this article, we establish a new phenomenon of “inattentional deafness” and highlight the level of load on visual attention as a critical determinant of this phenomenon. In three experiments, we modified an inattentional blindness paradigm to assess inattentional deafness. Participants made either a low- or high-load visual discrimination concerning a cross shape (respectively, a discrimination of line color or of line length with a subtle length difference). A brief pure tone was presented simultaneously with the visual task display on a final trial. Failures to notice the presence of this tone (i.e., inattentional deafness) reached a rate of 79% in the high-visual-load condition, significantly more than in the low-load condition. These findings establish the phenomenon of inattentional deafness under visual load, thereby extending the load theory of attention (e.g., Lavie, Journal of Experimental Psychology.
