    Tangible landscapes and abstract narratives

The Tangible Landscapes range of interactive audiovisual and sculptural pieces offer audiences opportunities to explore abstract landscapes, recreating an embodied experience of the materials, through tangible interaction with found objects. The objects can contain sensors (tilt, orientation, movement, proximity, pressure, etc) which allow the audience to manipulate the video material through the sensors influencing the algorithms in the system. New meanings and new narratives can emerge from the audience interactions, explorations and interpretations, combining the individual and social, as well as the intimate and the spatial. Interactive art in general, and these pieces in particular, encourage and support the audience to create their own unique experiences, allowing for an individual sense of agency. The resulting patterns and images that emerge from the interaction, though these deliberate opportunities, a participative process of co-creating. This paper presents a range of these Tangible Landscape pieces, their relationship with earlier pieces and research, and placed in a context of artistic expression engaging with nature such as Landscape Art

    A systematic review of the cost-effectiveness of worksite physical activity and/or nutrition programs

    Objective The aim of this study was to appraise and summarize the evidence on the cost-effectiveness of worksite physical activity and/or nutrition programs. Methods We searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, SportDiscus, PsycInfo, NIOSHTIC-2, NHSEED, HTA, and Econlit for studies published up to 14 January 2011. Additionally, we searched for articles by reviewing references, searching authors' databases, and contacting authors of included studies. Two researchers independently selected articles. Articles had to include a cost-effectiveness and/or cost-utility analysis comparing a worksite physical activity and/or nutrition program to usual care or an abridged version of the program. Data were extracted on study characteristics and results. Two researchers independently assessed the risk of bias using the Consensus on Health Economic Criteria list (CHEC-list). Results Ten studies (18 programs) were included. More than 50% of the studies fulfilled 11 (58%) of the 19 CHEC-list items. From various perspectives, worksite nutrition and worksite physical activity and nutrition programs (N=6) were more costly and more effective in reducing body weight than usual care. When only intervention costs were considered, most worksite nutrition (N=4/5) and worksite physical activity and nutrition programs (N=5/6) were more costly and more effective in reducing cholesterol level and cardiovascular disease risks, respectively. Conclusions The cost-effectiveness of more costly and more effective programs depends on the "willingness to pay" for their effects. It is unknown how much decision-makers are willing to pay for reductions in body weight, cholesterol level, and cardiovascular disease risks. Therefore, conclusions about the cost-effectiveness of worksite physical activity and/or nutrition programs cannot be made. There is substantial need for improvement of the methodological quality of studies and particular emphasis should be placed on the handling of uncertainty.     Resolving discharge parameters from atomic oxygen emission

    A method is proposed to spatially resolve discharge parameters from experimental measurements of emission intensity and 1D numerical simulations including an O atom collisional-radiative model. The method can be used for different plasmas and conditions. Here, contracted microwave discharges for CO2 conversion are studied at intermediate to high pressures (100–300 mbar). Radial profiles of electron density (ne) are used as input in the model and corrected to successfully simulate the measured Gaussian profiles of emission intensity of the 777 nm transition (I777). As a result, radially-resolved parameters inaccessible in experiments, such as ne, power density (Pabs), electron temperature (Te), electric field and reaction rates, are numerically-obtained for several conditions. ne and Pabs approximately follow Gaussian profiles that are broader than that of I777. For pressures below 150 mbar, the difference in full width at half maximum is typically a factor 1.6. This consists in a phenomenon of optical contraction, which is due to concave profiles of O molar fraction and Te. The implications of the simulated profiles on the study of plasmas for CO2 conversion are discussed and it is shown that these profiles allow to explain high reactor performances at low pressures

That is, the entire process from goal activation to goal completion can take place without conscious awareness of the goal. This observation is somewhat paradoxical, because there is no denying that in daily life people are often consciously aware of the goals they pursue. The question is when and why? Here, we tested and confirmed the hypothesis that people become aware of their goals when goal pursuit is difficult. In two experiments, we demonstrated that unconsciously-activated goals are more likely to intrude into consciousness when goal progress is problematic

    Tactile display in electronic musical instruments

    Unlike acoustical instruments, electronic musical instruments display a synthetic sound source, which in fact can only be heard and not felt. Tactually displaying attributes of the sound (e.g., pitch, volume envelope, timbre) enables the performer to improve muscular control. Several technologies for enhancing tactual display of the sound source, as well as ways of control will be described. For example, input devices such as gloves and gesture trackers and other technologies were adapted from virtual reality research. These developments led to the realisation that the link between sound source and its "feel" was missing.
