The Athenian Regulations for Samos (IG I3 48) Again

Am Ende des Krieges zwischen Athen und Samos in den Jahren 441–439 v.Chr. waren die Bürger von Samos von ihren athenischen Verbündeten vollständig besiegt worden. Von dem Friedensvertrag blieben mehrere Bruchstücke erhalten. Dieser Vertrag bereitet der wissenschaftlichen Forschung zum Attischen Seereich seit langer Zeit Probleme. Scheinbar belegt er ein unerwartet hohes Maß an Milde der Athener gegenüber Samos. Er legt auch nahe, dass die Athener am Ende des Krieges in Samos die Demokratie eingeführt hätten, was ansonsten nicht nachzuweisen ist. Gegenüber dieser Sicht versucht der Aufsatz zu zeigen, dass all diese Ansichten auf fehlerhaften Rekonstruktionen des inschriftlich überlieferten Textes beruhen. H. T. Wade-Gery und B. D. Meritt rekonstruierten den Stein auf der Basis einer mutmaßlichen Zeilenlänge von 35 Buchstaben, vor allem im Hinblick auf die Liste der Strategen am Ende des Dekrets. Ich stimme mit anderen Wissenschaftlern darin überein, dass eine größere Zeilenlänge nicht nur möglich, sondern auch vorzuziehen ist, da sie mehrere der Probleme der historischen Interpretation aus dem Weg räumt.The Samian War of 441–439 BC ended in the complete defeat of the Samians by their Athenian allies. The remains of their peace treaty are preserved in several fragments. This treaty has long presented problems for scholars of the Athenian Empire; it appears to show a great deal of unexpected leniency on the Athenians’ part towards the Samians. It also suggests that the Athenians established a democracy on Samos at the end of the Samian War, which is not supported historically. In fact, I believe that this impression is based upon an erroneous restoration of the text on the stone. H. T. Wade-Gery and B. D. Meritt restored the stone on a 35-letter line length, largely to make sense of a strategic list at the end of the decree. I follow other scholars in suggesting a longer line-length is not only feasible, but preferable, since it removes several of these historical puzzles.La guerre samienne de 441 à 439 a.C. s’est terminée par la défaite complète des Samiens face à leurs anciens alliés athéniens. Plusieurs fragments de leur traité de paix ont été conservés, un traité qui a longtemps posé des problèmes aux spécialistes de l’empire athénien. Il semble en effet montrer un degré surprenant d’indulgence de la part des Athéniens envers les Samiens; par ailleurs, il suggère que les Athéniens auraient instauré à la fin de la guerre samienne une démocratie sur l’île de Samos, ce qui n’est pas confirmé par l’histoire connue. Je pense en réalité que cette impression s’appuie sur une mauvaise restitution de l’inscription. La restitution proposée par H. T. Wade-Gery et B. D. Meritt est établie sur la base d’une ligne de 35 lettres de longueur, en grande partie pour donner son sens à une liste des stratèges placée à la fin du décret. En suivant d’autres spécialistes, je suggère que l’idée de lignes plus longues est non seulement possible, mais qu’elle est préférable dans la mesure où elle permet d’écarter plusieurs de ces problèmes historiques
