    Quantum-Hall plateau-plateau transition in top-gated epitaxial graphene grown on SiC (0001)

    We investigate the low-temperature magneto-transport properties of monolayer epitaxial graphene films formed on the Si-face of semi-insulating 4H-SiC substrates by a high temperature sublimation process. A high-k top-gate on the epitaxial graphene is realized by inserting a fully oxidized nanometer thin aluminum film as a seeding layer, followed by an atomic layer deposition process. At low temperatures, the devices demonstrate a strong field effect by the top gate with an on/off ratio of ~7 and an electron mobility up to ~3250 cm^2/Vs. After the observation of the half-integer quantum Hall effect for monolayer epitaxial graphene films, detailed magneto-transport measurements have been carried out including varying densities, temperatures, magnetic fields and currents. We study the width of the distinguishable quantum-Hall plateau to plateau transition (Landau level index n=0 to n=1) as temperature (T) and current are varied. For both gate voltage and magnetic field sweeps and T>10 K the transition width goes as T^{-\kappa} with exponent \kappa ~0.42. This universal scaling exponent agrees well with those found in III-V heterojunctions with short range alloy disorders and in exfoliated graphene.Comment: accepted by Journal of Applied Physic

    Self-Reported Sexual Assault in Convicted Sex Offenders and Community Men

    Although self-reported sexual assault perpetrated by men against women has been well documented among college men, less is known about self-reported perpetration among convicted sex offenders and community men. This study provides unique descriptive and comparative information on sexual assaults in these understudied populations. Participants were 40 convicted sex offenders and 49 demographically-comparable community men who completed the Sexual Experiences Survey (SES; Abbey, Parkhill, & Koss, 2005; Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987) and other surveys to capture the promiscous sex and hostile masculinity pathways posited by the confluence model (Malamuth, 2003). We found notably few differences between sex offenders and community men in the rate and severity of sexual assault perpetration and the tactics used to obtain unwanted sexual contact. Specifically, 68% of sex offenders and 59% of community men acknowledged they had perpetrated sexual assault. Both groups used guilt and anger as the most frequent tactics to obtain unwanted sexual activity from their female victims. Consistent with the confluence model, an impersonal orientation towards sexual relationships was associated with sexual assault for both sex offenders and community men. Future directions for research on sexual assault perpetration and violence prevention efforts are discussed in light of these findings

    Prognostic Value of RV Function Before and After Lung Transplantation

    AbstractObjectivesWe investigated the effects of lung transplantation on right ventricular (RV) function as well as the prognostic value of pre- and post-transplantation RV function.BackgroundAlthough lung transplantation success has improved over recent decades, outcomes remain a challenge. Identifying predictors of mortality in lung transplant recipients may lead to improved long-term outcomes after lung transplantation.MethodsEighty-nine (age 60 ± 6 years, 58 men) consecutive patients who underwent single or double lung transplantation and had pre- and post-transplantation echocardiograms between July 2001 and August 2012 were evaluated. Echocardiographic measurements were performed before and after lung transplantation. Left ventricular (LV) and RV longitudinal strains were analyzed using velocity vector imaging. Cox proportional prognostic hazard models predicting all-cause death were built.ResultsThere were 46 all-cause (52%) and 17 cardiac (19%) deaths during 43 ± 33 months of follow-up. After lung transplantation, echocardiography showed improved systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP) (50 ± 19 mm Hg to 40 ± 13 mm Hg) and RV strain (−17 ± 5% to −18 ± 4%). No pre-transplantation RV parameter predicted all-cause mortality. After adjustment for age, sex, surgery type, and etiology of lung disease in a Cox proportional hazards model, both post-transplantation RV strain (hazard ratio: 1.13, 95% confidence interval: 1.04 to 1.23, p = 0.005), and post-transplantation SPAP (hazard ratio: 1.03, 95% confidence interval: 1.01 to 1.05, p = 0.011) were independent predictors of all-cause mortality. When post-transplantation RV strain and post-transplantation SPAP were added the clinical predictive model based on age, sex, surgery type, and etiology, the C-statistic improves from 0.60 to 0.80 (p = 0.002).ConclusionsAlterations of RV function and pulmonary artery pressure normalize, and post-transplantation RV function may provide prognostic data in patients after lung transplantation. Our study is based on a highly and retrospectively selected group. We believe that larger prospective studies are warranted to confirm this result

    The effect of a massive object on an expanding universe

    A tetrad-based procedure is presented for solving Einstein's field equations for spherically-symmetric systems; this approach was first discussed by Lasenby et al. in the language of geometric algebra. The method is used to derive metrics describing a point mass in a spatially-flat, open and closed expanding universe respectively. In the spatially-flat case, a simple coordinate transformation relates the metric to the corresponding one derived by McVittie. Nonetheless, our use of non-comoving (`physical') coordinates greatly facilitates physical interpretation. For the open and closed universes, our metrics describe different spacetimes to the corresponding McVittie metrics and we believe the latter to be incorrect. In the closed case, our metric possesses an image mass at the antipodal point of the universe. We calculate the geodesic equations for the spatially-flat metric and interpret them. For radial motion in the Newtonian limit, the force acting on a test particle consists of the usual 1/r21/r^2 inwards component due to the central mass and a cosmological component proportional to rr that is directed outwards (inwards) when the expansion of the universe is accelerating (decelerating). For the standard Λ\LambdaCDM concordance cosmology, the cosmological force reverses direction at about z0.67z\approx 0.67. We also derive an invariant fully general-relativistic expression, valid for arbitrary spherically-symmetric systems, for the force required to hold a test particle at rest relative to the central point mass.Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures; new version, to match the version published in MNRA

    A conditional form of Bruton's tyrosine kinase is sufficient to activate multiple downstream signaling pathways via PLC Gamma 2 in B cells

    BACKGROUND: Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) is essential for B cell development and function. Mutations of Btk elicit X-linked agammaglobulinemia in humans and X-linked immunodeficiency in the mouse. Btk has been proposed to participate in B cell antigen receptor-induced signaling events leading to activation of phospholipase C-γ2 (PLCγ2) and calcium mobilization. However it is unclear whether Btk activation is alone sufficient for these signaling events, and whether Btk can activate additional pathways that do not involve PLCγ2. To address such issues we have generated Btk:ER, a conditionally active form of the kinase, and expressed it in the PLCγ2-deficient DT40 B cell line. RESULTS: Activation of Btk:ER was sufficient to induce multiple B cell signaling pathways in PLCγ2-sufficient DT40 cells. These included tyrosine phosphorylation of PLCγ2, mobilization of intracellular calcium, activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and c-Jun NH(2)-terminal kinase (JNK) mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, and apoptosis. In DT40 B cells deficient for PLCγ2, Btk:ER activation failed to induce the signaling events described above with the consequence that the cells failed to undergo apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that Btk:ER regulates downstream signaling pathways primarily via PLCγ2 in B cells. While it is not known whether activated Btk:ER precisely mimics activated Btk, this conditional system will likely facilitate the dissection of the role of Btk and its family members in a variety of biological processes in many different cell types

    Extent of Thoracic Aortic Atheroma Burden and Long-Term Mortality After Cardiothoracic Surgery A Computed Tomography Study

    ObjectivesWe hypothesized that the extent of aortic atheroma of the entire thoracic aorta, determined by pre-operative multidetector-row computed tomographic angiography (MDCTA), is associated with long-term mortality following nonaortic cardiothoracic surgery.BackgroundIn patients evaluated for cardiothoracic surgery, presence of severe aortic atheroma is associated with adverse short- and long-term post-operative outcome. However, the relationship between aortic plaque burden and mortality remains unknown.MethodsWe reviewed clinical and imaging data from all patients who underwent electrocardiographic-gated contrast-enhanced MDCTA prior to coronary bypass or valvular heart surgery at our institution between 2002 and 2008. MDCTA studies were analyzed for thickness and circumferential extent of aortic atheroma in 5 segments of the thoracic aorta. A semiquantitative total plaque-burden score (TPBS) was calculated by assigning a score of 1 to 3 to plaque thickness and to circumferential plaque extent. When combined, this resulted in a score of 0 to 6 for each of the 5 segments and, hence, an overall score from 0 to 30. The primary end point was all-cause mortality during long-term follow-up.ResultsA total of 862 patients (71% men, 67.8 years) were included and followed over a mean period of 25 ± 16 months. The mean TPBS was 8.6 (SD: ±6.0). The TPBS was a statistically significant predictor of mortality (p < 0.0001) while controlling for baseline demographics, cardiovascular risk factors, and type of surgery including reoperative status. The estimated hazard ratio for TPBS was 1.08 (95% confidence interval: 1.045 to 1.12). Other independent predictors of mortality were glomerular filtration rate (p = 0.015), type of surgery (p = 0.007), and peripheral artery disease (p = 0.03).ConclusionsExtent of thoracic aortic atheroma burden is independently associated with increased long-term mortality in patients following cardiothoracic surgery. Although our data do not provide definitive evidence, they suggest a relationship to the systemic atherosclerotic disease process and, therefore, have important implications for secondary prevention in post-operative rehabilitation programs
