Immunocytochemical localization of the main intrinsic polypeptide (MIP) in ultrathin frozen sections of rat lens.
The in situ distribution of the 26-kdalton Main Intrinsic Polypeptide (MIP or MP 26), a putative gap junction protein in ocular lens fibers, was defined at the electron microscope level using indirect immunoferritin labeling of ultrathin frozen sections of rat lens. MIP was found distributed throughout the plasma membrane of the lens fiber cell, with no apparent distinction between junctional and nonjunctional membrane. MIP was not detectable in the basal or lateral plasma membrane of the lens epithelial cell, including the interepithelial cell gap junctions; nor was MIP detectable in the plasma membrane or gap junctions of the hepatocyte. Previous reports have indicated that the protein composition of the lens fiber cell junction differs from that of the hepatocyte gap junction. The evidence presented here suggests that the composition of the fiber cell junction and plasma membrane is also immunocytochemically distinct from that of its progenitor, the lens epithelial cell
Phase transition between d-wave and anisotropic s-wave gaps in high temperature oxides superconductors
We study models for superconductivity with two interactions: due to
antiferromagnetic(AF) fluctuations and due to phonons, in a weak coupling
approach to the high temperature superconductivity. The nature of the two
interactions are considerably different; is positive and sharply peaked
at (,) while is negative and peaked at () due to
weak phonon screening. We numerically find (a) weak BCS attraction is enough to
have high critical temperature if a van Hove anomaly is at work, (b) (AF)
is important to give d-wave superconductivity, (c) the gap order parameter
is constant(s-wave) at extremely overdope region and it
changes to anisotropic s-wave as doping is reduced, (d) there exists a first
order phase transition between d-wave and anisotropic s-wave gaps. These
results are qualitatively in agreement with preceding works; they should be
modified in the strongly underdope region by the presence of antiferromagnetic

Secondary Metabolic Gene Cluster Silencing in Aspergillus Nidulans
In contrast to most primary metabolism genes, the genes involved in secondary metabolism and certain nutrient utilization pathways are clustered in fungi. Recently a nuclear protein, LaeA, was found to be required for the transcription of several secondary metabolite gene clusters in Aspergillus nidulans. Here we show that LaeA regulation does not extend to nutrient utilization or the spoC1 sporulation clusters. One of the secondary metabolite clusters regulated by LaeA contains the positive regulatory (i.e. aflR) and biosynthetic genes required for biosynthesis of sterigmatocystin (ST), a carcinogenic toxin. Analysis of ST gene cluster expression indicates LaeA regulation of the cluster is location specific as transcription of genes bordering the ST cluster are unaffected in a ΔlaeA mutant and placement of a primary metabolic gene, argB, in the ST cluster resulted in argB silencing in the ΔlaeA background. ST cluster gene expression was remediated when an additional copy of aflR was placed outside of the cluster but not when placed in the cluster. Site-specific mutation of an s-adenosyl methionine (AdoMet) binding site in LaeA generated a ΔlaeA phenotype suggesting the protein to be a methyltransferase
And in the Darkness Bind Them: Equatorial Rings, B[e] Supergiants, and the Waists of Bipolar Nebulae
We report the discovery of two new circumstellar ring nebulae in the western
Carina Nebula. The brighter object, SBW1, resembles a lidless staring eye and
encircles a B1.5 Iab supergiant. Its size is identical to the inner ring around
SN1987A, but SBW1's low N abundance indicates that the star didn't pass through
a RSG phase. The fainter object, SBW2, is a more distorted ring, is N-rich, and
has a central star that seems to be invisible. We discuss these two new nebulae
in context with rings around SN1987A, Sher25, HD168625, RY Scuti, WeBo1, SuWt2,
and others. The ring bearers fall into two groups: Five rings surround hot
supergiants, and all except for the one known binary are carbon copies of the
ring around SN1987A. We propose a link between these rings and B[e]
supergiants, where the rings derive from the same material in an earlier B[e]
phase. The remaining four rings surround evolved intermediate-mass stars; all
members of this ring fellowship are close binaries, hinting that binary
interactions govern the forging of such rings. We estimate that there may be
several thousand more dark rings in the Galaxy, but we are scarcely aware of
their existence due to selection effects. The lower-mass objects might be the
equatorial density enhancements often invoked to bind the waists of bipolar

Shifts of the nuclear resonance in the vortex lattice in YBaCuO
The NMR and NQR spectra of Cu in the CuO plane of
YBaCuO in the superconducting state are discussed in terms of the
phenomenological theory of Ginzburg-Landau type extended to lower temperatures.
We show that the observed spectra, Kumagai {\em et al.}, PRB {\bf 63}, 144502
(2001), can be explained by a standard theory of the Bernoulli potential with

Differences in signal contrast and camouflage among different colour variations of a stomatopod crustacean, Neogonodactylus oerstedii
Animal colouration is often a trade-off between background matching for camouflage from predators, and conspicuousness for communication with con- or heterospecifics. Stomatopods are marine crustaceans known to use colour signals during courtship and contests, while their overall body colouration may provide camouflage. However, we have little understanding of how stomatopods perceive these signals in their environment or whether overall body coloration does provide camouflage from predators. Neogonodactylus oerstedii assess meral spot colour during contests, and meral spot colour varies depending on local habitat. By calculating quantum catch for N. oerstedii’s 12 photoreceptors associated with chromatic vision, we found that variation in meral spot total reflectance does not function to increase signal contrast in the local habitat. Neogonodactylus oerstedii also show between-habitat variation in dorsal body colouration. We used visual models to predict a trichromatic fish predator’s perception of these colour variations. Our results suggest that sandy and green stomatopods are camouflaged from a typical fish predator in rubble fields and seagrass beds, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate signal contrast and camouflage in a stomatopod. These results provide new insight into the function and evolution of colouration in a species with a complex visual system
Spin-triplet superconductivity in quasi-one dimension
We consider a system with electron-phonon interaction, antiferromagnetic
fluctuations and disconnected open Fermi surfaces. The existence of odd-parity
superconductivity in this circumstance is shown for the first time. If it is
applied to the quasi-one-dimensional systems like the organic conductors
(TMTSF)_2X we obtain spin-triplet superconductivity with nodeless gap. Our
result is also valid in higher dimensions(2d and 3d).Comment: 2 page
Managing the complexity of doing it all : an exploratory study on students' experiences when trained stepwise in conducting consultations
Background: At most medical schools the components required to conduct a consultation, medical knowledge, communication, clinical reasoning and physical examination skills, are trained separately. Afterwards, all the knowledge and skills students acquired must be integrated into complete consultations, an art that lies at the heart of the medical profession. Inevitably, students experience conducting consultations as complex and challenging. Literature emphasizes the importance of three didactic course principles: moving from partial tasks to whole task learning, diminishing supervisors' support and gradually increasing students' responsibility. This study explores students' experiences of an integrated consultation course using these three didactic principles to support them in this difficult task.
Methods: Six focus groups were conducted with 20 pre-clerkship and 19 clerkship students in total. Discussions were audiotaped, transcribed and analysed by Nvivo using the constant comparative strategy within a thematic analysis.
Results: Conducting complete consultations motivated students in their learning process as future physician. Initially, students were very much focused on medical problem solving. Completing the whole task of a consultation obligated them to transfer their theoretical medical knowledge into applicable clinical knowledge on the spot. Furthermore, diminishing the support of a supervisor triggered students to reflect on their own actions but contrasted with their increased appreciation of critical feedback. Increasing students' responsibility stimulated their active learning but made some students feel overloaded. These students were anxious to miss patient information or not being able to take the right decisions or to answer patients' questions, which sometimes resulted in evasive coping techniques, such as talking faster to prevent the patient asking questions.
Conclusion: The complex task of conducting complete consultations should be implemented early within medical curricula because students need time to organize their medical knowledge into applicable clinical knowledge. An integrated consultation course should comprise a step-by-step teaching strategy with a variety of supervisors' feedback modi, adapted to students' competence. Finally, students should be guided in formulating achievable standards to prevent them from feeling overloaded in practicing complete consultations with simulated or real patients
