Spor efter Kierkegaard i den moderne fysik

Max Jammer claimed that, "There can be no doubt that the Danish precursor of modern existentialism and neo-orthodox theology, Soren Kierkegaard, through his influence on Bohr, affected also the course of modern physics to some extent." Despite Jammer's failure to supply sufficient evidence for this claim, I argue that it is not completely off base. In particular, I argue that Kierkegaard and Bohr belong to a common philosophical tradition, and I begin to investigate some of the themes that characterize this tradition

Towards a Jurisprudence of the Embodied mind – Sarah Lund, Forbrydelsen and the Mindful Body

As Erika Fischer-Lichte remarked, the great Polish theatre theorist Jerzy Grotowski redefined the notion of the body of the actor as an embodied mind, as a responsive and responding self. Conversely, law abjures the body, its interpreters – lawyers and scholars – inured in practices of rationality, reason and logic, or mindful disembodiment. Travelling through the Danish capital, encountering Danes real and fictitious to illustrate how much we function through our bodies, this essay suggests that we are better and more effective legal interpreters as embodied minds, rather than disembodied minds. But this is not mindless embodiment, a mere reflex or bodily outburst. The embodied mind is self-aware (physically, socially, intellectually) and possesses the same embodied virtuous morality held by Grotowski’s actors. Reminiscent of Kierkegaard’s uniting of the mind-body divide, this connected mind and body challenges the Augustinian negation of the body and associated interpretative assumptions inherited over centuries of legal thought

Norbert Elias and the Frankfurter Traditions

In 1977 Norbert Elias returned to Frankfurt am Main after 43 years in exile. I was a student then, having just arrived from Denmark to study philosophy and the Frankfurt tradition. It is my thesis that this particular seminar and interpretation culture from the 30’s had a decisive influence on Norbert Elias’ process-oriented sociology and civilisation theory. The way in which psychoanalytical experiences were combined with sociological themes, where the categories are reflected on a background of a fundamental philosophical knowledge, is a unique civilising interplay with roots in the city of Frankfurt

Governing Uranium in the Danish realm

When the 2009 Act granting Greenland self-government was passed, giving the territory full authority over its natural resources, a complex and mixed legal system was introduced within the "Commonwealth of the Realm", which includes Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. This system has been further complicated by Denmark´s membership and Greenland´s non-membership of the European Union. Much of the debate today on Greenland´s uranium potential is focused on clarifying issues of competence and authority between Greenland and Denmark, the aim being to move beyond the notion of "zero tolerance" to developing concrete legislative and regulatory measures
