Ocular involvement of sars-cov-2 in a polish cohort of covid-19-positive patients
The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 responsible for the current human COVID-19 pandemic has shown tropism toward different organs with variable efficiency, eyes included. The purpose of this study has been to investigate the presence of detectable SARS-CoV-2 infection in ocular swabs in patients affected by COVID-19. A consecutive series of 74 COVID-19-positive patients (age 21–89) were enrolled at two Polish COVID-19 hospitals for 4 months and were characterized by PCR for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in nasopharyngeal (NP) and ocular swabs, while their respiratory and ocular symptoms were noted. Almost 50% of them presented with severe/crit-ical respiratory involvement, and some degree of eye disease. No tight correlation was observed between the presence of ocular and respiratory symptoms. Three male patients presenting with severe/critical lung disease tested positive in ocular swab, however with mild/moderate ocular symptoms. In conclusion, our study lends further support to the view that overt ocular infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is not such a frequent occurrence
Mephedrone and Nicotine: Oxidative Stress and Behavioral Interactions in Animal Models
Krzem w medycynie i lecznictwie
Trace elements are a very important factor affecting functions of living organisms.
Silicon, the third most abundant trace element in the human body, is present in all healthy
tissues of people. It is especially strongly associated with connective tissues, as it has
been found to participate in bone development, collagen formation and mineralization of bone
matrix. Silicon has also been suggested to be involved in mammalian hormonal control
and to protect people from heart diseases.
An average dietary intake of silicon is about 20-30 mg/person/day, with higher intakes
for men than women. Silicic acid or orthosilicic acid are the bioavailable forms of silicon,
found mainly in food rich in fibre and whole grains, in vegetables, fruit and in drinking
water. Various alcoholic beverages such as beer or wine also contain considerable amounts
of silicon. Silicon provided with food is digested in the gastrointestinal tract to silicic acid,
which is then absorbed. With blood, it is distributed into various tissues and organs, where
it can exerts its action. The highest amounts of silicon are accumulated in the kidneys,
liver, bone, skin, spleen, lungs, while free orthosilicic acid, not bounded to proteins, occurs
in blood. The amount of silicon in tissues decreases with age. Depleted levels of silicon
have also been observed in some pathological states e.g. atherosclerosis.
The aim of the paper has been to present the role of dietary silicon in living organisms.
Silicon is necessary for the growth and bone calcification and as a biological crosslinking
agent of connective-tissue-based membrane structures. This element is considered
to have beneficial effects on several human disorders, including osteoporosis, ageing of
skin, hair and nails or atherosclerosis. It has also been suggested that silicon and silicic
acid may decrease the bioavailability of aluminium by blocking the uptake of the latter by
the gastrointestinal tract and impeding its reabsorption in the kidneys, thus protecting an
organism against the toxic (especially neurotoxic) action of aluminium. Anticancer, antiatherosclerotic
and antidiabetic effects of silicon have also been suggested.
Szczególną rolę odgrywa krzem w tworzeniu i funkcjonowaniu tkanki łącznej, ponieważ
bierze on udział w rozwoju kości, tworzeniu kolagenu i mineralizacji macierzy kostnej.
rozprowadzany do wszystkich tkanek i organów.
i tkanki ulegają wówczas stopniowej degeneracji.
a wpływem, jaki wywiera on na organizmy żywe.
Orangery Past and Today
Orangery and greenhouses appeared in the sixteenth century. In addition to utilitarian feature they also served an aesthetic and recreational functions. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, new function is sought for them. The article describes the situation of these facilities in Poland. The main aim is to present the state of preservation of existing objects in Lublin region (Poland). On the background of the history of architecture, it is discussed some examples of existing orangeris in the south-east of Poland
Antioxidative properties of selected plants
Free radicals and antioxidants play an important role in almost every disease, so it is important to their determination. In the literature described many methods for determining antioxidants. Often however, the total antioxidant potential (TAP) provides more information about the system than the determination individual antioxidant concentrations. The aim of the study was to determine the total antioxidant potential of water extract of selected plants (panax ginseng, pueraria montana, guarana and “Ekoland” tea). In order to investigate the TAP we used spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods. The results were correlated with the TAPs values related to the DPPH and peroxyl radicals as well as to the total polyphenols content in the sample
Magnez u pacjentów operowanych z powodu nowotworu odbytu lub jelita cienkiego i otrzymujących Całkowite Żywienie Pozajelitowe (CŻP) w okresie pooperacyjnym
Magnesium is fundamental to the existence of life. The consequence of altered magnesium
homeostasis may be magnesium deficiency. It is well known that magnesium plays
a role in tumour biology such as carcinogenesis, angiogenesis and tumour progression. In
the field of gastrointestinal cancer surgery of the clinical importance, magnesium has not
been specifically studied. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate changes of magnesium
concentrations in patients operated due to a small intestine or colorectal cancer
parenterally nurtured in comparison with a group of patients submitted to surgical interventions
due to gastrointestinal cancer but receiving standard nutrition after the operation.
The study group involved 78 patients operated on for gastrointestinal cancer, who
were divided into 3 groups: C – patients operated due to different types of alimentary tract
cancers who were provided with normal feeding after the operation, I – patients operated
due to colorectal cancer who were given TPN after the operation, II – patients operated
due to small intestine cancer who were given TPN after the operation. Three measurements
were performed in control group (C): the 1st measurement – a day before operation,
the 2nd measurement – on the third day after the operation and the 3rd measurement
– on the fifth day after the operation. In the group of patients receiving TPN, three
measurements were performed as well: the 1st measurement – a day before operation,
the 2nd measurement – on the third day after applying TPN and the 3rd measurement –
on the fifth day after applying TPN. Our studies revealed that application of TPN, containing magnesium, in patients operated both due to colorectal cancer and small intestine
cancer prevented decrease in the blood serum concentration of that element below the
reference norm, which occurred in patients receiving standard diet.
W grupie K dokonywano trzech pomiarów w kolejnych okresach:
8-Oxo-7,8-Dihydro-2′-Deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) and 8-Hydroxy-2′-Deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as a Potential Biomarker for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) Development
The growing clinical and epidemiological significance of gestational diabetes mellitus results from its constantly increasing worldwide prevalence, obesity, and overall unhealthy lifestyle among women of childbearing age. Oxidative stress seems to be the most important predictor of gestational diabetes mellitus development. Disturbances in the cell caused by oxidative stress lead to different changes in biomolecules, including DNA. The nucleobase which is most susceptible to oxidative stress is guanine. Its damage results in two main modifications: 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosineor 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine. Their significant level can indicate pathological processes during pregnancy, like gestational diabetes mellitus and probably, type 2 diabetes mellitus after pregnancy. This review provides an overview of current knowledge on the use of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosineand/or 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine as a biomarker in gestational diabetes mellitus and allows us to understand the mechanism of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosineand/or 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine generation during this disease
