Remarks on Compositionality (with reference to Gennadij Zeldoviè's article “On Russian Dative Reflexive Constructions: Accidental or Compositional”)
Zeldovič’s article “On Russian Dative Reflexive Constructions: Accidental or Compositional” is very interesting. It contains a good deal of insightful observations and is painstakingly argued. Its research object is the Russian dative reflexive construction (DRC) like Ивану не работается ‘Ivan does not feel like reading’. The aim of the article is to show that the DRC is fully compositional. Like many other works by Zeldovič, the article is written from the radical-pragmatic perspective and constitutes a very good illustration of this trend in linguistic research. The language material that it analyzes has often been investigated within more traditional frameworks, especially in Russian linguistics, which makes Zeldovič’s novel approach to the old problem particularly interesting. In this short note I would like (by way of discussion) to address two problems connected not so much with the DRC itself as with methodological issues concerning compositionality. I will dwell on two aspects: on the question of how we understand the very concept of compositionality, and what instruments we employ to demonstrate it
Quantity and degree assessment in an RDF.based semantic language
This paper introduces a semantic language developed with the objective to be used in a semantic analyzer based on linguistic and world knowledge. Linguistic knowledge is provided by a Combinatorial Dictionary and several sets of rules. Extra-linguistic information is stored in an Ontology. The meaning of the text is represented by means of a series of RDF-type triples of the form predicate (subject, object). Semantic analyzer is one of the options of the multifunctional ETAP-3 linguistic processor. The analyzer can be used for Information Extraction and Question Answering. We describe semantic representation of expressions that provide an assessment of the number of objects involved and/or give a quantitative evaluation of different types of attributes. We focus on the following aspects: 1) parametric and non-parametric attributes; 2) gradable and non-gradable attributes; 3) ontological representation of different classes of attributes; 4) absolute and relative quantitative assessment; 5) punctual and interval quantitative assessment; 6) intervals with precise and fuzzy boundarie
We address two methodological issues: 1) What is compositionality? We maintain the idea that if a linguistic unit is fully compositional, then in no place of the linguistic description do we need to efer to its existence. 2) How should the compositionality be demonstrated? We suggest that this demonstration should meet higher standards of logical rigor
Universal Dictionary of Concepts
A universal dictionary of concepts, developed as a part of the ongoing effort to create a semantic intermediary language for global information exchange, is presented. The article describes basic principles and contents of the dictionary and outlines the current state of the project. The dictionary can evolve into an open and freely available language-independent resource with many potential applications. For example, the extensible dictionary of concepts can serve as a pivot to uniformly record and link meanings of words of different languages and facilitate creation of bi- and multilingual dictionaries. Another possible use is word sense markup of corpora. It could bring rich extra benefits due to the fact that the same set of concepts is going to be linked with major world languages including Russian, English, Spanish etc. and supported by multiple text analysis tools. There is a possibility of cooperation and exchange between this dictionary project and other projects, which could enhance the output and eventually spare a lot of parallel effort
Trading multiple mean reversion
How should one construct a portfolio from multiple mean-reverting assets?
Should one add an asset to portfolio even if the asset has zero mean reversion?
We consider a position management problem for an agent trading multiple
mean-reverting assets. We solve an optimal control problem for an agent with
power utility, and present a semi-explicit solution. The nearly explicit nature
of the solution allows us to study the effects of parameter mis-specification,
and derive a number of properties of the optimal solution
Parsing the SynTagRus Treebank of Russian
We present the first results on parsing the SYNTAGRUS tree bank of Russian with a data-driven dependency parser, achieving labeled attachment score of over 82%and an unlabeled attachment score of 89%.A feature analysis shows that high parsing accuracy is crucially dependent on the use of both lexical and morphological features. We conjecture that the latter result can be generalized to richly inflected languages in general, provided that sufficient amounts of training data are available
Enhancing Resource Management through Prediction-based Policies
Task-based programming models are emerging as a promising alternative to make
the most of multi-/many-core systems. These programming models rely on runtime
systems, and their goal is to improve application performance by properly
scheduling application tasks to cores. Additionally, these runtime systems
offer policies to cope with application phases that lack in parallelism to fill
all cores. However, these policies are usually static and favor either
performance or energy efficiency. In this paper, we have extended a task-based
runtime system with a lightweight monitoring and prediction infrastructure that
dynamically predicts the optimal number of cores required for each application
phase, thus improving both performance and energy efficiency. Through the
execution of several benchmarks in multi-/many-core systems, we show that our
prediction-based policies have competitive performance while improving energy
efficiency when compared to state of the art policies.Comment: Postprint submitted and published at Euro-Par2020: International

Enhancement of the upper critical field by nonmagnetic impurities in dirty two-gap superconductors
Quasiclassic Uzadel equations for two-band superconductors in the dirty limit
with the account of both intraband and interband scattering by nonmagnetic
impurities are derived for any anisotropic Fermi surface. From these equations
the Ginzburg-Landau equations, and the critical temperature are obtained.
An equation for the upper critical field, which determines both the temperature
dependence of and the orientational dependence of
as a function of the angle between and the c-axis is
obtained. It is shown that the shape of the curve essentially
depends on the ratio of the intraband electron diffusivities and ,
and can be very different from the standard one-gap dirty limit theory. In
particular, the value can considerably exceed ,
which can have important consequences for applications of . A scaling
relation is proposed which enables one to obtain the angular dependence of
from the equation for at . It is shown
that, depending on the relation between and , the ratio of the upper
critical field for and can both increase and decrease as the temperature decreases. Implications
of the obtained results for are discussed
