A seguir, alguns tĂłpicos importantes mereceram tratamento Ă parte: a fome, o alimento e o domĂnio religioso, as descobertas europĂ©ias e a difusĂŁo mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia. O artigo se encerra com um rĂĄpido balanço crĂtico da historiografia brasileira sobre o tema

Coastal dynamics observed from a mobile air-sea interaction platform
A mobile air-sea interaction platform has been developed in order to quantify the spatial and temporal variability of wind-wave-current coupling in coastal and estuarine environments. University of Miami's Surface Physics Experimental Catamaran (SPEC) is outfitted with both atmospheric and oceanographic instruments, as well as an on-board, realtime data acquisition system. SPEC has a custom-designed bow mounting plate that provides a rigid platform for securing sensors away from the vessel's already minimal superstructure. This versatile platform provides the high temporal resolution of conventional moorings and towers coupled with the spatial resolution necessary to capture the complex dynamics of near shore processes. The SPEC was deployed as part of a coastal field campaign that took place along Northwest Florida's Gulf Coast region during the month of December 2013. As part of this effort, the dynamics near a river plume's frontal edge were investigated using both SPEC-mounted instrumentation as well as other SPEC-deployed sensors. Observations revealed internal bores (or propagating hydraulic jumps) traveling away from the plume front. These findings have significant implications for the coastal transport of surface material (e.g., oil) across large distances far from the original source
The Effect of Furanocoumarin Derivatives on Induction of Apoptosis and Multidrug Resistance in Human Leukemic Cells
Background: The insensitivity of cancer cells to therapeutic agents is considered to be the main cause of failure of therapy and mortality of patients with cancer. A particularly important problem in these patients is the phenomenon of multidrug resistance, consisting of abnormal, elevated expression of transport proteins (ABC family). The aim of this research included determination of IC50 values of selected furanocoumarins in the presence and absence of mitoxantrone in leukemia cells and analysis of changes in apoptosis using anexinV/IP and Casp3/IP after 24 h exposure of cell lines to selected coumarins in the presence and absence of mitoxantrone in IC50 concentrations. Methods: Research was conducted on 3 cell lines derived from the human hematopoietic system: HL-60, HL-60/MX1 and HL-60/MX2. After exposure to coumarin compounds, cells were subjected to cytometric analysis to determine the induction of apoptosis by two methods: the Annexin V test with propidium iodide and the PhiPhiLux-G1D2 reagent containing caspase 3 antibodies. Results: All of the furanocoumarin derivatives studied were found to induce apoptosis in leukemia cell lines. Conclusions: Our results clearly show that the furanocoumarin derivatives are therapeutic substances with antitumor activity inducing apoptosis in human leukemia cells with phenotypes of resistance
