Endomorphisms of abelian varieties, cyclotomic extensions and Lie algebras
We prove an analogue of the Tate conjecture on homomorphisms of abelian
varieties over infinite cyclotomic extensions of finitely generated fields of
characteristic zero.Comment: 9 page
On the physics and technology of gaseous particle detectors
Despite an already long and fruitful history, gaseous elementary-particle
detectors remain today an important mainstay of high-energy and nuclear physics
experiments and of radiation detection in general. In here we briefly describe
some of the gaseous detector's main technologies and applications, along with
some unsolved gas-discharge physics aspects of practical relevance.Comment: Submitted to Plasma Sources in Science and Technolog
Metallic Xenon, Molecular Condensates, and Superconductivity
A possibility of explaining the light absorption observed to occur under
pressure-induced xenon metallization as due to the transition to the
superconducting state is analyzed. The mechanism of the van der Waals bonding
is discussed.Comment: LaTeX 2.09 (RevTeX), 4 pages, 4 PostScript figures included in tex
Perturbed Three Vortex Dynamics
It is well known that the dynamics of three point vortices moving in an ideal
fluid in the plane can be expressed in Hamiltonian form, where the resulting
equations of motion are completely integrable in the sense of Liouville and
Arnold. The focus of this investigation is on the persistence of regular
behavior (especially periodic motion) associated to completely integrable
systems for certain (admissible) kinds of Hamiltonian perturbations of the
three vortex system in a plane. After a brief survey of the dynamics of the
integrable planar three vortex system, it is shown that the admissible class of
perturbed systems is broad enough to include three vortices in a half-plane,
three coaxial slender vortex rings in three-space, and `restricted' four vortex
dynamics in a plane. Included are two basic categories of results for
admissible perturbations: (i) general theorems for the persistence of invariant
tori and periodic orbits using Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser and Poincare-Birkhoff
type arguments; and (ii) more specific and quantitative conclusions of a
classical perturbation theory nature guaranteeing the existence of periodic
orbits of the perturbed system close to cycles of the unperturbed system, which
occur in abundance near centers. In addition, several numerical simulations are
provided to illustrate the validity of the theorems as well as indicating their
limitations as manifested by transitions to chaotic dynamics.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, submitted to the Journal of Mathematical Physic
Signatures of polaronic excitations in quasi-one-dimensional LaTiO
The optical properties of quasi-one-dimensional metallic LaTiO are
studied for the polarization along the and axes. With decreasing
temperature modes appear along both directions suggestive for a phase
transition. The broadness of these modes along the conducting axis might be due
to the coupling of the phonons to low-energy electronic excitations across an
energy gap. We observe a pronounced midinfrared band with a temperature
dependence consistent with (interacting) polaron models. The polaronic picture
is corroborated by the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling and the
temperature dependence of the dc conductivity.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Stability conditions and positivity of invariants of fibrations
We study three methods that prove the positivity of a natural numerical
invariant associated to parameter families of polarized varieties. All
these methods involve different stability conditions. In dimension 2 we prove
that there is a natural connection between them, related to a yet another
stability condition, the linear stability. Finally we make some speculations
and prove new results in higher dimension.Comment: Final version, to appear in the Springer volume dedicated to Klaus

Two years of flight of the Pamela experiment: results and perspectives
PAMELA is a satellite borne experiment designed to study with great accuracy
cosmic rays of galactic, solar, and trapped nature in a wide energy range
(protons: 80 MeV-700 GeV, electrons 50 MeV-400 GeV). Main objective is the
study of the antimatter component: antiprotons (80 MeV-190 GeV), positrons (50
MeV-270 GeV) and search for antinuclei with a precision of the order of
). The experiment, housed on board the Russian Resurs-DK1 satellite,
was launched on June, 2006 in a orbit with an
inclination of 70 degrees. In this work we describe the scientific objectives
and the performance of PAMELA in its first two years of operation. Data on
protons of trapped, secondary and galactic nature - as well as measurements of
the December 2006 Solar Particle Event - are also provided.Comment: To appear on J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. as part of the proceedings of the
