Socratic Pedagogy, Race and Power
Rud (1997) wrote in this journal: " Leaving aside the blatant (to my eyes at least) problems of power and dominance of an elderly Greek citizen teaching a slave boy, this example [the Meno] of teaching has always left me cold." Garlikov (1998) addressed Rud's criticism of the Socratic dialogue. The present article addresses and extends Garlikov's response to cover general notions of power, and shows how these may affect Socratic discourse. Socratic pedagogy is not merely an illusory exercise where participants acquiesce to notions of truth because of power differentials. But power relations play a role in all communicative contexts. However, in Socractic pedagogy the adverse effects of power are greatly reduced and the focus is shifted from people to propositions
Quantile contours and allometric modelling for risk classification of abnormal ratios with an application to asymmetric growth-restriction in preterm infants
We develop an approach to risk classification based on quantile contours and
allometric modelling of multivariate anthropometric measurements. We propose
the definition of allometric direction tangent to the directional quantile
envelope, which divides ratios of measurements into half-spaces. This in turn
provides an operational definition of directional quantile that can be used as
cutoff for risk assessment. We show the application of the proposed approach
using a large dataset from the Vermont Oxford Network containing observations
of birthweight (BW) and head circumference (HC) for more than 150,000 preterm
infants. Our analysis suggests that disproportionately growth-restricted
infants with a larger HC-to-BW ratio are at increased mortality risk as
compared to proportionately growth-restricted infants. The role of maternal
hypertension is also investigated.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures, 8 table

Development of a Network of Accurate Ozone Sensing Nodes for Parallel Monitoring in a Site Relocation Study
Recent technological advances in both air sensing technology and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity have enabled the development and deployment of remote monitoring networks of air quality sensors. The compact size and low power requirements of both sensors and IoT data loggers allow for the development of remote sensing nodes with power and connectivity versatility. With these technological advancements, sensor networks can be developed and deployed for various ambient air monitoring applications. This paper describes the development and deployment of a monitoring network of accurate ozone (O3) sensor nodes to provide parallel monitoring in an air monitoring site relocation study. The reference O3 analyzer at the station along with a network of three O3 sensing nodes was used to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of O3 across four Southern California communities in the San Bernardino Mountains which are currently represented by a single reference station in Crestline, CA. The motivation for developing and deploying the sensor network in the region was that the single reference station potentially needed to be relocated due to uncertainty that the lease agreement would be renewed. With the implication of siting a new reference station that is also a high O3 site, the project required the development of an accurate and precise sensing node for establishing a parallel monitoring network at potential relocation sites. The deployment methodology included a pre-deployment co-location calibration to the reference analyzer at the air monitoring station with post-deployment co-location results indicating a mean absolute error (MAE) < 2 ppb for 1-h mean O3 concentrations. Ordinary least squares regression statistics between reference and sensor nodes during post-deployment co-location testing indicate that the nodes are accurate and highly correlated to reference instrumentation with R2 values > 0.98, slope offsets < 0.02, and intercept offsets < 0.6 for hourly O3 concentrations with a mean concentration value of 39.7 ± 16.5 ppb and a maximum 1-h value of 94 ppb. Spatial variability for diurnal O3 trends was found between locations within 5 km of each other with spatial variability between sites more pronounced during nighttime hours. The parallel monitoring was successful in providing the data to develop a relocation strategy with only one relocation site providing a 95% confidence that concentrations would be higher there than at the current site

Is meaning fraught with ought?
According to Normativism, what an expression means has immediate implications for how a subject should or may (not) employ that expression. Many view this thesis as imposing substantive constraints upon theories of linguistic meaning. In this paper, I shall not consider that view; instead, I shall address the prior issue of whether or not one should accept Normativism. Against certain recent prominent lines of attack common to a number of different anti-Normativist discussions, I shall defend both the Normativist thesis and an attempt to appeal to a certain platitude in its support
Meaning and Understanding
Explores the central role in Wittgenstein's later work of his opposition to a 'mechanistic' conception of understanding. Offers a diagnosis of Kripke's skeptical paradox on this basis
Pluralism in organizations : learning from unconventional forms of organizations
The bureaucratic organization is still regarded as the conventional
organizational form, but is ill-suited to an increasingly pluralistic world.
Research on the variety of organizational forms has increased dramatically
over the past three decades and offers the potential to understand better
how pluralism is manifested and managed within organizations. However,
this research remains fragmented. The purpose of this paper is to review
and synthesize research on unconventional organizations to explore how
organizations resolve or attenuate the tensions related to pluralism.
Drawing from research in leading management journals, it covers seven
distinct literatures: ‘referent organization’, ‘temporary organization’,
‘pluralistic organization’, ‘meta-organization’, ‘bridging organization’,
‘hybrid organization’, and ‘field-configuring event’. For each literature,
we trace the genealogy of the key concepts and review their distinct
insights regarding organizational pluralism. We then synthesize and
discuss their collective contributions and conclude with avenues of
research for pluralism in organizations
The Influence Of Ethics Instructions On Ethical Judgment Of Minority Students
Recent ethical scandals in corporate America have brought to the fore the issue of ethics in business. Many have questioned the role of the American educational system in general and the business school curriculum in particular for failing to inculcate in students and future business leaders good ethical standards. This exploratory study examines the influence of ethics instruction on the ethical judgment of students. Business students in an accredited (AACSB International) business program who have taken at least two formal courses in business ethics were compared to engineering seniors and freshmen business students who had not been introduced to formal instructions in ethics. Respondents were exposed to realistic ethical business scenarios dealing with conflict of interest transactions and personal integrity. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups of respondents on conflict of interest scenarios but no difference on personal integrity scenarios. Implications are considered for ethics education
