Realization and protection of deep flysch excavations in complex geotechnical conditions
The excavation technology, and the type and scope of slope protection measures, were selected based on preliminary analyses and investigation results, in specific construction conditions, immediately below some major road facilities, in partly degraded thinly layered volcanogenic sedimentary rocks. The realization and protection of a deep and wide foundation pit was made according to the method presented in this paper, which effectively ensured stability of the existing structures and full safety of work in every phase of excavation, all this under a very tight schedule and at low cost of construction work

Helicobacter heilmannii associated gastritis: Case report
Helicobacter heilmannii (Gastrospirillum hominis) is a small, gram-negative bacterium from Helicobacter family. Its incidence is significantly lower than for Helicobacter pylori and it accounts for about 1% of cases, mainly in countries with lower socioeconomic conditions. Helicobacter heilmannii may be a causative agent for gastritis, gastric ulcer but it can also trigger malignant diseases such as gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. This paper presents our first case of gastritis caused by Helicobacter heilmannii

Uncommon metastatic site from breast cancer
Introduction. Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women and the main leading cause of cancer death. The most frequent sites of metastases from breast cancer are bones, lungs, the central nervous system, the liver and soft tissue. Colonic metastases from breast cancer are rare. Case report. We presented a 70-year-old woman with bulky obstructing lesion of sigmoid colon. A physician in charge on our department examined the patient and past history of breast cancer was found up. Surgery was performed with removal of sigmoid colon and three of six lymph nodes were positive. Pathological examination, including immunohistochemical stains, confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer to sigmoid colon. The multidisciplinary oncology team suggested postoperative chemotherapy. The patient received four cycles of chemotherapy with paclitaxel followed by anastrozole. On the first control visit no disease activity was detected. Conclusion. In patients with the past history of breast cancer the symptoms of hematochezia or anemia may indicate colonic metastases
Preparation, crystal structure and antibacterial activity of condensation products of usnic acid and acyl hydrazides
Three condensation products of usnic acid with the hydrazides of alpha-naphthoic, caprylic, and oxamic acids, respectively, have been prepared and characterized by spectrometric methods. A reassignment of the C-13-NMR spectral data of usnic acid has been done. The crystal structure of usnic acid 11-[(1-naphthoyl)hydrazone] ethanol solvate (1:1) has been determined. This substance crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, the space group P2(1), with the unit cell dimensiones a=7.7365(7) Angstrom, b = 19.632(2) Angstrom, c = 9.4150(15) Angstrom, beta = 108.830(11)degrees, V = 1405.0(4) Angstrom(3), and Z=2. At the end of the structure analysis R = 0.055, R-w = 0.052 and S = 0.89. The antibacterial activities of the compounds have been evaluated. The greatest activity against Staphylococcus aureus was found for usnic acid, somewhat lower for the derivatives with hydrazides of alpha-naphthoic and caprylic acid, and much lower for the derivative with semioxamazide. The activities of these compounds probably depend on their lipophilicity

Bevacizumab in neoadjuvant treatment of patients with liver metastases from colorectal carcinoma
Background: Liver metastases are the leading cause of death in patients with colorectal cancer. Despite advances in chemotherapy, surgical resection of hepatic metastases is still considered the only curative options. However, the majority of patients have inoperable disease at presentation. Perioperative chemotherapy is the most successful way for improved selection of patients for resection. The aim of the study was to demonstrate if and to what extent does bevacizumab, introduced in chemotherapy, increase response rates, and development of liver metastases. Methods: Our study included 50 patients who were divided in two groups. The experimental group included patients who were treated with bevacizumab plus chemotherapy, and the control group included patients who were treated with chemotherapy only. Results: The comparison showed that the patients who were treated with bevacizumab became candidates for resection of liver metastases in higher percentage (85%:52%). In addition, distribution of patients regarding the development of metastases resulted in statistically significant difference. Ratio between the patients with good response from the experimental and the control group was 67%:39%. Ratio of patients with stable disease was 26%:48%, and of patients with progressive disease, it was 7%:3%. The estimate of margin after resection was statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Bevacizumab in combination with chemotherapy in therapy of liver metastases from primary colorectal cancer improves and increases response rates and development of liver metastases
