A Conversation with Professor Tadeusz Cali\'{n}ski
Tadeusz Cali\'{n}ski was born in Pozna\'{n}, Poland in 1928. Despite the
absence of formal secondary eduction for Poles during the Second World War, he
entered the University of Pozna\'{n} in 1948, initially studying agronomy and
in later years mathematics. From 1953 to 1988 he taught statistics, biometry
and experimental design at the Agricultural University of Pozna\'{n}. During
this period he founded and developed the Pozna\'{n} inter-university school of
mathematical statistics and biometry, which has become one of the most
important schools of this type in Poland and beyond. He has supervised 24 Ph.D.
students, many of whom are currently professors at a variety of universities.
He is now Professor Emeritus. Among many awards, in 1995 Professor Cali\'{n}ski
received the Order of Polonia Restituta for his outstanding achievements in the
fields of Education and Science. In 2012 the Polish Statistical Society awarded
him The Jerzy Sp{\l}awa-Neyman Medal for his contribution to the development of
research in statistics in Poland. Professor Cali\'{n}ski in addition has
Doctoral Degrees honoris causa from the Agricultural University of Pozna\'{n}
and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. His research interests include
mathematical statistics and biometry, with applications to agriculture, natural
sciences, biology and genetics. He has published over 140 articles in
scientific journals as well as, with Sanpei Kageyama, two important books on
the randomization approach to the design and analysis of experiments. He has
been extremely active and successful in initiating and contributing to fruitful
international research cooperation between Polish statisticians and
biometricians and their colleagues in various countries, particularly in the
Netherlands, France, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Japan and Portugal. The

Problematyka gender w mediach społecznościowych - studium przypadku
The article describes the role of social media in the presentation of gender issues on the basis of the example of Caitlyn Jenner. It is not only the story of a public figure, in addition a transgender one, who underwent a successful transformation into a woman. It is also the story of an extraordinary media campaign that makes use of the most of the available tools of the traditional media and Web 2.0 tools, in order to reach the widest possible audience and build a completely new image of a forgotten American hero and a supporting star of the worldwide popular reality show
Medialny obraz rodziny w postpatriarchalnym świecie : nowe modele, role i tożsamości
The object of study in this article is modern family and its image presented in mass
media communication.
The first part of the work characterizes the image of the modern family and the changes
which it has undergone in recent decades ― from the traditional patriarchal family
model to the modern family in which there is no single dominant model and which is
characterized by the adoption of its various forms. Changes were also made in the gender
roles traditionally assigned to each generic family members because of their sex, which
had an impact on the formation of new individual identities. In the next part of the article, there were presented figures on the condition of the
family in Poland ― to characterize the real picture and verify the authenticity of the argument
set at the beginning of the article. The presented data clearly confirm a number
of changes which the family has went through in recent years, which led to the process
of its “shrinking”. And in consequence to the departure from the traditional model of the
patriarchal family and the need to replace it with new family forms.
The last part of the article , characterizes the media image of a family by the example
of the most popular Polish television series in which still dominates the image of the
patriarchal and multigenerational family, that is professing traditional values.
The results of the final analysis are to establish whether the image of the modern family
presented in the modern media is true or false. The results clearly confirm that the media
family picture is a fake and does not reflect its actual condition

Changes in inflammatory biomarkers after successful lifestyle intervention in obese children
Background: Obesity has been associated with low-grade systemic inflammation, potentially leading to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes,
dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases. Even moderate weight loss through dietary changes and physical exercise is effective in
preventing and managing obesity-associated disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of weight loss in response to
a lifestyle modification on the serum levels of inflammatory markers in obese children and adolescents.
Material and methods: Fifty obese subjects completed a six-month programme consisting of combined hypocaloric diet and moderate
physical activity. High-sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), fibrinogen (FB), white blood count (WBC), glucose, insulin,
insulin resistance index (HOMA IR), glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), lipids as well as systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP)
were measured before and after intervention.
Results: Patients had a 5.3 ± 3.4 kg average weight loss, with significant decreases of SDS-BMI, percentage of body fat, SDS-waist, SBP
and DBP, HOMA-IR, HbA1c and reductions in serum IL-6, CRP, WBC, FB. In the multivariable linear models, changes in percentage of
body fat and HOMA-IR were positively associated with favourable changes in inflammatory parameters.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that weight reduction after successful lifestyle intervention results in improvements of blood inflammatory
markers in obese children and adolescents. (Pol J Endocrinol 2011; 62 (6): 499–505)Wstęp: Otyłość wiąże się z obecnością niewielkiego stopnia stanu zapalnego, potencjalnie prowadzącego do insulinooporności, cukrzycy
typu 2, dyslipidemii i chorób sercowo-naczyniowych. Nawet umiarkowane obniżenie masy ciała dzięki zmianie diety i zwiększonej
aktywności fizycznej zapobiega występowaniu zaburzeń związanych z otyłością. Celem pracy była ocena wpływu obniżenia masy ciała
(w wyniku modyfikacji stylu życia) na stężenie wskaźników stanu zapalnego w surowicy otyłych dzieci i młodzieży.
Materiał i metody: W 6-miesięcznym programie polegającym na stosowaniu ubogokalorycznej diety i umiarkowanej aktywności fizycznej
uczestniczyło 50 otyłych pacjentów. W warunkach podstawowych i po 6 miesiącach oznaczano: białko C-reaktywne (CRP), interleukinę 6
(IL-6), fibrynogen (FB), leukocyty (WBC), glukozę, insulinę, wskaźnik insulinooporności (HOMA-IR), hemoglobinę glikozylową (HbA1c),
lipidy, ciśnienie tętnicze krwi skurczowe (SBD) i rozkurczowe (DBD).
Wyniki: Średni spadek masy ciała u pacjentów wynosił 5,3 ± 3,4 kg, ze znaczącą redukcją wartości SDS-BMI, procentowej zawartości
tłuszczu, SDS-obwodu pasa, SBP i DBP, HOMA-IR, HbA1c oraz obniżeniem stężeń IL-6, CRP, WBC, FB w surowicy. W wieloczynnikowej
analizie regresji zmiany w procentowej zawartości tłuszczu i HOMA-IR były pozytywnie skorelowane z podobnymi zmianami wskaźników
stanu zapalnego.
Wnioski: Redukcja masy ciała w efekcie zmiany stylu życia wpływa na poprawę wskaźników stanu zapalnego u otyłych dzieci i młodzieży.

Stężenie 25-hydroksywitaminy D (25-OH-D) u otyłych nastolatków
Background: There is increasing evidence that vitamin D deficiency is common and has been associated with several non-bone related
outcomes, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The influences of gender, puberty, and adiposity on
serum hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) levels and the relationship between 25-OH-D and insulin resistance in obese children were studied.
Material and methods: Age, gender, pubertal stage, weight status (standard deviation score of body mass index: BMI-SDS, percentage
body fat, waist circumference), 25-OH-D levels, and insulin resistance index calculated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR)
were evaluated in 64 obese adolescents. Multivariable linear regression was used to determine factors associated with decreased serum
25-OH-D levels and to study the relationship between 25-OH-D and HOMA-IR.
Results: Median serum 25-OH-D level was 10.1 ng/mL (25.2 nmol/L). 14% of patients were vitamin D-sufficient (25-OH-D ≥ 20 ng/mL),
36% had intermediate values (11–19 ng/mL), and 50% were deficient (25-OH-D ≤ 10 ng/mL). In the multivariable model, older age, puberty,
higher value of percentage of body fat, and the presence of acanthosis nigricans (AN) were all negatively associated with 25-OH-D.
Lower 25-OH-D levels were also associated with higher blood glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR after adjustment for puberty and SDS-BMI.
Summer positively correlated with 25-OH-D level.
Conclusion: Our study confirms that obesity is a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency. Hypovitaminosis D, common in obese adolescents
at risk for type 2 diabetes (older age, puberty, acanthosis nigricans) is associated with worse insulin resistance.
Materiał i metody: U 64 otyłych nastolatków oceniano wiek, płeć, stadium pokwitania, stopień otyłości i wskaźnik insulinooporności
(HOMA-IR). Do określenia czynników wpływających na obniżenie stężenia 25-OH-D w surowicy oraz do oceny zależności między
25-OH-D a HOMA-IR wykorzystano wielowymiarową analizę regresji.
(Endokrynol Pol 2011; 62 (6): 506–511
Atypical forms of hyperthyroidism
Oprócz powszechnie znanych najczęstszych przyczyn nadczynności
tarczycy, do których należy zaliczyć chorobę Graves-Basedowa, wole wieloguzkowe i gruczolaka autonomicznego,
należy także pamiętać o innych, rzadszych chorobach
prowadzących do nadmiaru hormonów tarczycy w surowicy.
Autorzy przedstawili problem nietypowych postaci tyreotoksykozy
przebiegających bez nadmiernej produkcji hormonów
tarczycy i charakteryzujących się niskim 24-godzinnym
wychwytem 131J przez gruczoł tarczowy. Ponadto w artykule
omówiono tak zwane maski hipertyreozy, do których
zalicza się postać apatyczną, nerwowo-mięśniową, żołądkowo-
jelitową i sercowo-naczyniową.Except from well-known the most frequent reasons of the
hyperthyroidism such as the Graves-Basedow disease, multinodular
goitre and the autonomous adenoma we should
also remember the other rarer illnesses leading to the excess
of thyroid hormones in the serum. Authors presented the
problem of atypical forms of thyrotoxicosis which run without
the overproduction of thyroid hormones and are characterized
by low 24 h 131 J uptake by the thyroid gland. So
called masks of hyperthyroidism such as apathetic, neuromuscular,
gastrointestinal and cardiovascular forms were
also discussed in the article
Maternal active or passive smoking in relation to some neonatal morphological parameters and complications
Abstract Objective: To determine the relationship between maternal active and passive smoking and neonatal morphological parameters, as well as some neonatal complications in full-term newborns. Methods: 150 women with uncomplicated, singleton pregnancies were assessed by means of a patient questionnaire. Neonates were divided into 3 groups according to obtained information on maternal smoking status - active smoking: n=51, passive smoking: n=49, non-smoking: n=50. Immediately after birth morphological parameters such as: birthweight, body length, head and chest circumference were assessed. Results: Values of birthweight, body length, head and chest circumference in newborns born to active smoking mothers were significantly lower than in newborns of passive smoking and non-smoking mothers. No significant differences in values of RBC, WBC, PLT, Hemoglobin and Hematocrit between the studied groups have been detected. Oxygen hood was applied significantly more often in case of newborns from active smoking mothers than in the control subjects. In groups of newborns from active and passive smoking mothers, hyperbilirubinemia and signs of early onset infection were diagnosed significantly more frequently than in the control subjects. Conclusions: Active maternal smoking, as opposed to passive maternal smoking, leads to decreased birthweight, body length, head and chest circumference. Full-term newborns born to active smoking mothers often need to be treated with oxygen hood during the first hours after birth. Maternal smoking, both active and passive, leads to an increased risk of hyperbilirubinemia and early onset infection in neonates
Związek pomiędzy surowiczym stężeniem osteokalcyny, otłuszczeniem ciała i zaburzeniami metabolicznymi u dzieci i młodzieży z otyłością
Introduction: Childhood obesity has been associated with the development of insulin resistance, potentially leading to several metabolicdisorders. Osteocalcin has been reported to contribute to the regulation of glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between serum osteocalcin and metabolic risk factors in obese children andadolescents.Material and methods: Age, gender, pubertal stage, adiposity markers (standard deviation score of body mass index: BMI-SDS, percentageof body fat, waist circumference), blood pressure, serum osteocalcin (OC), fasting plasma glucose and insulin, glycated haemoglobin level(HbA1c), insulin resistance estimated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR), lipid profile, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen(FB), white blood cell count (WBC) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) were evaluated in 142 obese children and adolescents. Stepwisemultiple regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between serum osteocalcin and metabolic risk parameters. Results: Mean serum osteocalcin level was 72.0 ± 20.5 μg/L (range: 16.8–181.5 µg/L). After adjustment for multiple potential confounders, serum osteocalcin concentration was inversely associated with adiposity markers as well as HOMA-IR, HbA1c, triglycerides, CRP, FBand positively with 25-OH-D and HDL-cholesterol. In stepwise multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for age, gender and pubertalstage, osteocalcin was significantly negatively related to HOMA-IR, triglycerides and waist circumference. Conclusions: Serum osteocalcin concentration is associated with blood markers of dysmetabolic phenotype and measures of adiposity, suggesting that osteocalcin is important not only for bones but also for glucose and fat metabolism as early as during childhood.(Endokrynol Pol 2013; 64 (5): 346–352)Wstęp: Otyłość u dzieci wiąże się z rozwojem insulinooporności i ryzykiem wielu zaburzeń metabolicznych.
