Results of Biological Sampling Conducted for Impact Analysis for Long-Range maintenance dredging in the Norfolk Naval Complex
Seven stations were sampled once on 24 or 25 September and once between 13 November and 5 December, 1974 using a 16 foot se~i-balloon otter trawl with a 3/8 inch stretch mesh cod inner liner. Those areas sampled were: Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River (Station 1), Elizabeth River between Deperming Station and Craney Island Oil Pier (Station 2), Elizabeth River Approach Channel (Station 3), Willoughby Bay Approach Channel (Station 4), Little Creek (Station 5), York River channel off Cheatham Annex piers (Station 6), and York River channel off the Coast Guard and Navy fuel piers (Station 7
Evaluating impacts on continental shelf environments, concepts and prospects
New and expanding activities on the continental shelf including disposal of wastes and dredged material, deepwater ports, floating nuclear power plants, mining, and oil and gas exploitation, have spawned increased interest in the ecology of continental shelf ecosystems and the environmental effects of these activities. Changing patterns of historical uses of the shelf environment, i.e., fishing and transportation, and as yet hypothetical new uses, such as tapping energy from the ocean\u27s currents and gradients, will undoubtedly further increase our concern for the coastal oceans.https://scholarworks.wm.edu/vimsbooks/1147/thumbnail.jp
