Liturgical Hospitality: Theological Refl ections on Sharing in Grace

    Get PDF
This essay looks at the Church\u27s liturgy using the metaphor of hospitality. The following assumptions will guide its development: (1) that the Church\u27s practice of hospitality is both a reflection and an extension of God\u27s own hospitality (Reinhard Huetter); (2) that there is a participatory identity between Christ and the Church, with this connection implying that liturgical hospitality forms the primary shape of God\u27s gracious hospitality in our world, specifically as that hospitality is mediated by the Church through the preaching of the Gospel and the administration of the sacraments; (3) that liturgical hospitality cannot function properly without regard for boundaries, and consequently, some basis for exclusion. Upon the basis of these three assumptions this essay describes four practices of liturgical hospitality: evangelical, baptismal, Eucharistic, and penitential hospitality, noting their benefits and dangers

The Real Presence of Hope and Love: The Christocentric Legacy of Pope Benedict XVI

The author notes that a media that focuses only on progressive or conservative issues can capture only the surface of Christianity. Cardinal Ratzinger delves below the social and moral issues to Christology, the place of Christ at the center of Christianity. By looking at Deus Caritas Est (his 2005 encyclical on love) and Spe Salvi(his 2007 encyclical on hope), the author notes that by focusing on Christ, we find what Ratzinger calls “an encounter, a love story, . . . an event.” It is this reality of Christianity that Catholics and Evangelicals should discuss: the visibility of God in Christ and what this means for the life of a Christian. What we find in Christ is God and God’s will for humankind. It is not the laws of matter that rule us but a Person, the Spirit revealed in Jesus as Love. Ratzinger speaks of being “touched” by Christ in ways that prove his presence in this life and the promise of eternal life. This real presence of faith, love, and hope anchor Christians to Christ and to each other. Here is the heart of Christianity that we share. The author presents stories Ratzinger told about those who have been touched by this presence and made true Christians. They are the historical testament of the central power of Christology in the lives of Christians

Thomas Aquinas on the Beatific Vision: A Christological Deficit

    Get PDF
This article argues Aquinas’s doctrine of the beatific vision suffers from a twofold christological deficit: (1) Aquinas rarely alludes to an eternally continuing link (whether as cause or as means) between Christ’s beatific vision and ours; and (2) for Aquinas the beatific vision is not theophanic, that is to say, for Aquinas, Christ is not the object of the beatific vision; instead, he maintains the divine essence constitutes the object.  Even if Aquinas were to have followed his “principle of the maximum” in the unfinished third part of the Summa and so had discussed Christ’s own beatific vision as the cause of the saints’ beatific vision, he would still have ended up with a christological deficit, inasmuch as Christ would still not be the means and the object of the saints’ beatific vision.  For a more christologically robust way forward, I draw on John Owen and several other Puritan theologians, who treat the beatific vision as the climactic theophany

JUSTIFICAÇÃO NA RECAPITULAÇÃO: IRENEU EM DIÁLOGO ECUMÉNICO

    Get PDF
Abstract: Justification has a relatively minor weight in Irenaeus' thinking. He discusses it particularly in his polemics against Gnostic approaches to Scriptures and the law. Justification is typically used by Irenaeus within a broader and more participatory framework of salvation. When we take these aspects into account, unexpected ecumenical possibilities open up among Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant followers. As such, one of the most important lessons from Irenaeus' discussion of justification is that such a concept should not be treated as an isolated doctrine. Rather, it is an aspect of participation in the recapitulation of Christ and, as such, serves to support and strengthen our deifying union of God and Christ. &nbsp

    Treatment of haemothorax

    Get PDF
SummaryHaemothorax is a problem commonly encountered in medical practice and is most frequently related to open or closed chest trauma or to invasive procedures of the chest. Spontaneous haemothorax is less common and can have various causes, such as the use of anticoagulants, neoplasia, and rupture of pleural adhesions. Identification by radiography and thoracentesis is indicated and treatment of the underlying trauma should start immediately. After insertion of a large chest tube, antibiotic prophylaxis in trauma patients should be administered for 24 h.Further treatment depends on the haemodynamic stability of the patient, the volume of evacuated blood and the occurrence of persistent blood loss. Surgical exploration by VATS or thoracotomy is necessary if >1.500 ml of blood has accumulated and/or an ongoing production of >200 ml of blood per hour is observed. If the haemorrhage is less severe, careful investigation into the underlying cause must be performed and blood should be evacuated by tube thoracostomy. If clotted blood retained in spite of tube thoracostomy, intrapleural fibrinolytic therapy can be applied to breakdown clots and adhesions. If conservative treatment is insufficient, a surgical approach with VATS or thoracotomy is indicated to prevent subsequent complications

A novel perspective on pharmaceutical R&D costs:opportunities for reductions

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: R&D costs as an element of medicines' pricing play a prominent role in the discussions regarding the affordability of medicine. This paper investigates the details of R&D costs and the potential for reductions. AREAS COVERED: The manuscript focuses on the constitution of R&D costs in relation to medicines' pricing and its potential developments. This manuscript builds on a cost-of-opportunity approach to explore the results of potential changes in drug development and its possible economic, political, and societal impacts. EXPERT OPINION: The cost of capital is the largest cost category that could be affected by authorities. Public institutions can affect these costs by increasing public investments in R&D and reducing the amount of development time that is associated with a high capital need. In order to affect the cost of failure, it is key to understand its drivers. A government taking risks as the funder of early innovation yields an opportunity to introduce an alternative model for medicine development. Next, to control pricing, it is important to adequately reward innovation in order to ensure improved quality of care, access, and affordability of systems. Innovation, high-quality care, access, and affordability require entrepreneurial and changing positions of governments, authorities, public institutions, and the pharmaceutical industry
