    Risk taking under transition: an empiricial compaison between chinese, western-, and eastern-german managers

    Even after 10 years, countries under transition are still on their way to becoming developed, internationally competitive countries. At this stage it is helpful for business cooperation to know whether managers in countries undergoing transition are behaving like socialists or Western managers, or somewhere in between. Many joint ventures and other alliances between Western companies and companies in countries in transition are seeking to establish new markets with new products or new technologies (i.e., new processes). They are risky because the returns are uncertain. Understanding the risk attitudes of managers in countries in transition can explain different investment behavior and provide vital information for installing the right incentives. This study compares the risk attitudes of Chinese, eastern, and western German managers. Chinese managers'' risk attitudes seem to be more similar to the attitudes of western German managers than to those of their counterparts in eastern Germany. Some of the reasons and consequences are discussed in this article

    Cross-border E-commerce Trade between China and Africa: Review of the Literature

    This article explores the opportunities, challenges, as well as the activities of the Chinese governmental and commercial stakeholders to promote cross-border e-commerce trade between China and Africa, based on the classification and correlation analysis of the literature from 2011 to 2019. The results show that the biggest driver for the development of China-Africa cross-border e-commerce trade is the gap between the rapid growth of the African population, especially the middle class, and the limited local capability to satisfy their demand. The rapid development of the internet and mobile internet is another driving factor. The biggest challenge is the last mile delivery of logistics, and online payment issues in Africa. At the macro-level the Chinese government has promoted measures such as infrastructure investment, e-commerce test zones and the establishment of pilot projects. At the firm level, Chinese companies have focused on solving practical micro-level local operational problems such as logistics, online payment, and talent training. The results also show that the referred literature is still in its infancy, mostly theoretical and less practical, and requires more in-depth domain specific analysis in the future

    We present a patient with massive posttraumatic ectopic calcification in the lower extremity. The patient complained of an increasing tender soft tissue mass with signs of acute inflammation and foot dorsiflexion weakness following a tibial fracture for 34years. A large radiopaque mass was resected and reconstructed using a free functional gracilis muscle transfer, resulting in recovery of stable soft tissue and foot dorsiflexion. The resected material showed highly fibrosed soft tissue with extensive dystrophic calcifications. There were no sign of recurrence at 18-month follow-u

    Intracardiac Echocardiography during Catheter-Based Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation

    Accurate delineation of the variable left atrial anatomy is of utmost importance during anatomically based ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation targeting the pulmonary veins and possibly other structures of the atria. Intracardiac echocardiography allows real-time visualisation of the left atrium and adjacent structures and thus facilitates precise guidance of catheter-based ablation of atrial fibrillation. In patients with abnormal anatomy of the atria and/or the interatrial septum, intracardiac ultrasound might be especially valuable to guide transseptal access. Software algorithms like CARTOSound (Biosense Webster, Diamond Bar, USA) offer the opportunity to reconstruct multiple two-dimensional ultrasound fans generated by intracardiac echocardiography to a three-dimensional object which can be merged to a computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging reconstruction of the left atrium. Intracardiac ultrasound reduces dwell time of catheters in the left atrium, fluoroscopy, and procedural time and is invaluable concerning early identification of potential adverse events. The application of intracardiac echocardiography has the great capability to improve success rates of catheter-based ablation procedures

    Superhelical Destabilization in Regulatory Regions of Stress Response Genes

    Stress-induced DNA duplex destabilization (SIDD) analysis exploits the known structural and energetic properties of DNA to predict sites that are susceptible to strand separation under negative superhelical stress. When this approach was used to calculate the SIDD profile of the entire Escherichia coli K12 genome, it was found that strongly destabilized sites occur preferentially in intergenic regions that are either known or inferred to contain promoters, but rarely occur in coding regions. Here, we investigate whether the genes grouped in different functional categories have characteristic SIDD properties in their upstream flanks. We report that strong SIDD sites in the E. coli K12 genome are statistically significantly overrepresented in the upstream regions of genes encoding transcriptional regulators. In particular, the upstream regions of genes that directly respond to physiological and environmental stimuli are more destabilized than are those regions of genes that are not involved in these responses. Moreover, if a pathway is controlled by a transcriptional regulator whose gene has a destabilized 5′ flank, then the genes (operons) in that pathway also usually contain strongly destabilized SIDD sites in their 5′ flanks. We observe this statistically significant association of SIDD sites with upstream regions of genes functioning in transcription in 38 of 43 genomes of free-living bacteria, but in only four of 18 genomes of endosymbionts or obligate parasitic bacteria. These results suggest that strong SIDD sites 5′ to participating genes may be involved in transcriptional responses to environmental changes, which are known to transiently alter superhelicity. We propose that these SIDD sites are active and necessary participants in superhelically mediated regulatory mechanisms governing changes in the global pattern of gene expression in prokaryotes in response to physiological or environmental changes

    Early Heparin Administration Reduces Risk for Left Atrial Thrombus Formation during Atrial Fibrillation Ablation Procedures

    Objective. Despite the use of anticoagulation during left atrial (LA) ablation procedures, ischemic cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs) are recognized as a serious complication. Heparin is usually given after safe transseptal access has been obtained, resulting in a short unprotected dwell time of catheters within the LA, which may account for CVAs. We investigated the frequency of CVAs and LA thrombus formation as detected by intracardiac ultrasound (ICE) depending on the timing of heparin administration. Methods and Results. Sixty LA ablation procedures with the use of ICE were performed in 55 patients. Patients were grouped by heparin administration after (Group I, n = 13) and before (Group II, n = 47) transseptal access. Group I patients were younger (56.6 ± 13.7 versus 65.9 ± 9.9 years, P = .01); other clinical and echocardiographic characteristics did not differ between groups. Early thrombus formation was observed in 2 (15.4%) of group I patients as compared to 0% of group II patients (P = .04). One CVA (2.1%) occurred in one group II patient without prior thrombus detection, and none occurred in group I patients (P = ns). Conclusion. Early administration of heparin reduces the risk of early intracardiac thrombus formation during LA ablation procedures. This did not result in reduced rate of CVAs

    713-4 Inhibition of Vascular Superoxide Production in Hypercholesterolemic Rabbit Aorta by L-Arginine Contributes to Restored Endothelium-dependent Relaxation

    Chronic oral administration of L-arginine (L-ARG) has been shown to enhance endothelial function in cholesterol (CHOL)-fed rabbits and to reduce atherogenesis. We investigated whether modulation of endogenous NO production (as assessed by urinary NO3-excretion) by L-ARG and the inhibitor of NO synthesis, L-NAME, affects vascular superoxide (O2-) production in hypercholesterolemic rabbits. Phorbol-myristate-acetate (PMA)-stimulated O2-production from isolated aortic rings was increased in rabbits given CHOL (+159±28%) or CHOL + L-NAME (+149±37%) as compared to controls (-22±7%), and endothelium-dependent relaxations by acetylcholine were diminished in both groups. In aortic rings from rabbits given CHOL + L-ARG, PMA-induced O2-production was restored to control levels (+14±17%; p<0.05), and endothelium-dependent cholinergic relaxations were also partly restored. Urinary NO3-excretion decreased in all animals fed a CHOL-enriched diet (p<0.01). As NO inactivated by O2-is also oxidized to NO3-, this indicates a decreased endothelial production of NO. NO3-excretion was further decreased by L-NAME (p<0.05 vs. CHOL), and partly restored by L-ARG (p<0.05). We conclude that both a decreased production of NO and an enhanced breakdown of NO by O2-contribute to the diminished biological activity of endothelial NO in hypercholesterolemia.     Restoring vascular nitric oxide formation by l-arginine improves the symptoms of intermittent claudication in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease

    AbstractBackground. Administration of l-arginine improves nitric oxide (NO) formation and endothelium-dependent vasodilation in atherosclerotic patients.Objectives. We investigated in this double-blind, controlled study whether prolonged intermittent infusion therapy with l-arginine improves the clinical symptoms of patients with intermittent claudication, as compared with the endothelium-independent vasodilator prostaglandin E1, and control patients.Methods. Thirty-nine patients with intermittent claudication were randomly assigned to receive 2 × 8 g l-arginine/day, or 2 × 40 μg prostaglandin E1(PGE1)/day or no hemodynamically active treatment, for 3 weeks. The pain-free and absolute walking distances were assessed on a walking treadmill at 3 km/h, 12% slope, and NO-mediated, flow-induced vasodilation of the femoral artery was assessed by ultrasonography at baseline, at 1, 2 and 3 weeks of therapy and 6 weeks after the end of treatment. Urinary nitrate and cyclic guanosine-3′, 5′-monophosphate (GMP) were assessed as indices of endogenous NO production.Results. l-Arginine improved the pain-free walking distance by 230 ± 63% and the absolute walking distance by 155 ± 48% (each p < 0.05). Prostaglandin E1improved both parameters by 209 ± 63% and 144 ± 28%, respectively (each p < 0.05), whereas control patients experienced no significant change. l-Arginine therapy also improved endothelium-dependent vasodilation in the femoral artery, whereas PGE1had no such effect. There was a significant linear correlation between the l-arginine/asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) ratio and the pain-free walking distance at baseline (r = 0.359, p < 0.03). l-Arginine treatment elevated the plasma l-arginine/ADMA ratio and increased urinary nitrate and cyclic GMP excretion rates, indicating normalized endogenous NO formation. Prostaglandin E1therapy had no significant effect on any of these parameters. Symptom scores assessed on a visual analog scale increased from 3.51 ± 0.18 to 8.3 ± 0.4 (l-arginine) and 7.0 ± 0.5 (PGE1; each p < 0.05), but did not significantly change in the control group (4.3 ± 0.4).Conclusions. Restoring NO formation and endothelium-dependent vasodilation by l-arginine improves the clinical symptoms of intermittent claudication in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease
