A comment on BCC crystalization in higher dimensions

Grover's Quantum Search Algorithm and Diophantine Approximation
In a fundamental paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 325 (1997)] Grover showed how a
quantum computer can find a single marked object in a database of size N by
using only O(N^{1/2}) queries of the oracle that identifies the object. His
result was generalized to the case of finding one object in a subset of marked
elements. We consider the following computational problem: A subset of marked
elements is given whose number of elements is either M or K, M<K, our task is
to determine which is the case. We show how to solve this problem with a high
probability of success using only iterations of Grover's basic step (and no
other algorithm). Let m be the required number of iterations; we prove that
under certain restrictions on the sizes of M and K the estimation m <
(2N^{1/2})/(K^{1/2}-M^{1/2}) obtains. This bound sharpens previous results and
is known to be optimal up to a constant factor. Our method involves
simultaneous Diophantine approximations, so that Grover's algorithm is
conceptualized as an orbit of an ergodic automorphism of the torus. We comment
on situations where the algorithm may be slow, and note the similarity between

Craniomaxillofacial Trauma in Dogs-Part II: Association Between Fracture Location, Morphology and Etiology.
Treatment of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma in dogs requires a thorough understanding of the CMF skeletal structures involved. The human medical literature has several examples of CMF trauma and fracture classification, including the classically described Le Fort fractures. The recent classification schemes require large studies using computed tomography (CT). In the veterinary medical literature, such studies are lacking. The aims of part II of this retrospective study were to use a large number of CT studies of dogs evaluated for CMF trauma to determine whether specific fracture locations in the CMF region occur concurrently, and whether trauma etiology influences fracture morphology. This information may then be used to form a fracture classification scheme in the future. The medical records and CT studies of 165 dogs over a 10-year period were evaluated. The skeletal location of CMF fractures as well as the severity of displacement and fragmentation of each fracture was recorded. Dogs' demographic data and trauma etiology were also recorded. Fractured portions of the mandible tended to occur with fractures of adjacent bones, with the major exception of symphyseal separation, which occurred simultaneously with fractures of the cribriform plate. Fractures of the maxillary bone were accompanied by many concurrent fractures affecting the majority of the midface, skull base, and cranial vault. When the zygomatic bone was fractured, the other bones comprising the orbit also tended to fracture. Fractures of the relatively superficially located frontal and nasal bones were often accompanied by fractures of the skull base. Fracture etiology influenced fracture morphology such that vehicular trauma resulted in a relatively higher number of severely displaced and comminuted fractures than did other trauma etiologies. This study provides examples of fractures that, when found, should prompt veterinarians to look for additional injuries in specific locations. In addition, it further highlights the need for thorough CT evaluation of the entire CMF region, even when clinically apparent fractures appear relatively superficial

Treatment of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma in dogs often requires a multidisciplinary approach and a thorough understanding of the CMF skeletal structures involved. The aim of this retrospective study was to use a large number of CT studies of dogs evaluated for CMF trauma and to describe fracture location and morphology in relation to demographic data and trauma etiology. The medical records and CT studies of 165 dogs over a 10-year period were evaluated. The skeletal location of CMF fractures as well as the severity of displacement and fragmentation of each fracture was recorded. Patient demographic data and trauma etiology were also recorded. Animal bites accounted for the majority of trauma (50%), followed by unknown trauma (15%), vehicular accidents (13%), and blunt force trauma (13%). Small dogs, <10 kg, and juveniles accounted for the majority of patients (41.8 and 25.5%, respectively). The most likely bone or region to be fractured was the maxillary bone, followed by the premolar and molar regions of the mandible. Up to 37 bones or regions were fractured in any given patient, with an average of 8.2 fractured bones or regions per dog. The most commonly fractured location varied according to trauma etiology. Specifically, vehicular accidents tended to result in more locations with a higher probability of fracture than other trauma types. A major conclusion from this study is that every bone of the CMF region was fractured in at least one case and many cases had a large number of fractured regions. Thus, the need for comprehensive assessment of the entire CMF region, preferably using CT, is underscored
XBP-1 specifically promotes IgM synthesis and secretion, but is dispensable for degradation of glycoproteins in primary B cells
Differentiation of B cells into plasma cells requires X-box binding protein–1 (XBP-1). In the absence of XBP-1, B cells develop normally, but very little immunoglobulin is secreted. XBP-1 controls the expression of a large set of genes whose products participate in expansion of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and in protein trafficking. We define a new role for XBP-1 in exerting selective translational control over high and sustained levels of immunoglobulin M (IgM) synthesis. XBP-1−/− and XBP-1+/+ primary B cells synthesize IgM at comparable levels at the onset of stimulation with lipopolysaccharide or CpG. However, later there is a profound depression in synthesis of IgM in XBP-1−/− B cells, notwithstanding similar levels of μmRNA. In marked contrast, lack of XBP-1 does not affect synthesis and trafficking of other glycoproteins, or of immunoglobulin light chains. Contrary to expectation, degradation of proteins from the ER, using TCRα or US11-mediated degradation of class I major histocompatibility complex molecules as substrates, is normal in XBP-1−/− B cells. Furthermore, degradation of membrane μ was unaffected by enforced expression of XBP-1. We conclude that in primary B cells, the XBP-1 pathway promotes synthesis and secretion of IgM, but does not seem to be involved in the degradation of ER proteins, including that of μ chains themselves
SAHABI EURYGNATHOHIPPUS FEIBELI: ITS SYSTEMATIC, STRATIGRAPHIC, CHRONOLOGIC AND BIOGEOGRAPHIC CONTEXTS
Sahabi, Libya is an important latest Miocene locality having yielded an extensive paleobotanical and vertebrate fauna. Amongst the fossil mammals there occurs an extensive, species diverse record of hipparionine horses. We develop here a complete record of Sahabi Eurygnathohippus feibeli now based on dental and postcranial material, in comparison to other equids from late Miocene equids from Europe, West Asia and Africa. We find that E. feibeli is the earliest recognized species of the predominantly African clade Eurygnathohippus, that its biogeographic range was Kenya, Ethiopia, Libya and Morocco, it ranged between 7.0 and 5.7 Ma and that it had deep-time evolutionary roots extending back to first occurring Old World hipparions. We further find that Eurygnathohippus was restricted to Africa until a more advanced member of the clade extended its range into the Indian Subcontinent during the late Pliocene, ca. 3.6-2.6 Ma
Diffusion limited aggregation as a Markovian process. Part I: bond-sticking conditions
Cylindrical lattice Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA), with a narrow width
N, is solved using a Markovian matrix method. This matrix contains the
probabilities that the front moves from one configuration to another at each
growth step, calculated exactly by solving the Laplace equation and using the
proper normalization. The method is applied for a series of approximations,
which include only a finite number of rows near the front. The matrix is then
used to find the weights of the steady state growing configurations and the
rate of approaching this steady state stage. The former are then used to find
the average upward growth probability, the average steady-state density and the
fractal dimensionality of the aggregate, which is extrapolated to a value near

In which shell-type SNRs should we look for gamma-rays and neutrinos from p-p collisions?
We present a simple analytic model for the various contributions to the
non-thermal emission from shell type SNRs, and show that this model's results
reproduce well the results of previous detailed calculations. We show that the
\geq 1 TeV gamma ray emission from the shell type SNRs RX J1713.7-3946 and RX
J0852.0-4622 is dominated by inverse-Compton scattering of CMB photons (and
possibly infra-red ambient photons) by accelerated electrons. Pion decay (due
to proton-proton collisions) is shown to account for only a small fraction,
\lesssim10^-2, of the observed flux, as assuming a larger fractional
contribution would imply nonthermal radio and X-ray synchrotron emission and
thermal X-ray Bremsstrahlung emission that far exceed the observed radio and
X-ray fluxes. Models where pion decay dominates the \geq 1 TeV flux avoid the
implied excessive synchrotron emission (but not the implied excessive thermal
X-ray Bremsstrahlung emission) by assuming an extremely low efficiency of
electron acceleration, K_ep \lesssim 10^-4 (K_ep is the ratio of the number of
accelerated electrons and the number of accelerated protons at a given energy).
We argue that observations of SNRs in nearby galaxies imply a lower limit of
K_ep \gtrsim 10^-3, and thus rule out K_ep values \lesssim 10^-4 (assuming that
SNRs share a common typical value of K_ep). It is suggested that SNRs with
strong thermal X-ray emission, rather than strong non-thermal X-ray emission,
are more suitable candidates for searches of gamma rays and neutrinos resulting
from proton-proton collisions. In particular, it is shown that the neutrino
flux from the SNRs above is probably too low to be detected by current and

Constraining evaporation rates based on large-scale sea surface transects of salinity or isotopic compositions

It is shown that these parameters combine to form an evaporation length, L = uh(0)/q, which provides an estimate for the distance the column must travel before evaporating completely. While these changes in the surface water level due to evaporation are compensated by entrainment of water into the overall column, the changes in either near‐surface salinity or isotopic compositions are retained and can be measured. Observations of surface salinity and isotopic compositions of δ18O and δD along 1,000‐ to 3,500‐km long transects are used to estimate values of L in the Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean, and Gulf Stream. The variations of salinity, δ18O and δD in all four basins are linear. As anticipated, the estimated value of L is smallest in the slowly moving and arid Red Sea and is greatest in the fast‐moving Gulf Stream.The salinity and δ18O data collected aboard the Indian Ocean cruise described in Srivastava et al.
