This essay critically examines the Kai Ba Lidai Shiji (Annals of Batavia), a Chinese history of Batavia which was written by an anonymous Chinese author around 1794 as part of the rather large corpus of Chinese archival sources about the history of the Chinese community of Batavia/Jakarta. A short introduction about earlier authors who have dealt with the text is followed by comments on the composition, structure and historical value of this unique urban history

Land Reclamation in the Rhine and Yangzi Deltas: An Explorative Comparison, 1600–1800

In the early sixteenth century, the deltas of Rhine and Yangzi faced comparable ecological crises, but neither of these riverine societies was deterred by the mounting challenges. They independently developed divergent ways to not only defend against the encroaching water, but also reclaim new land from the water. This paper aims to examine the factors in the making of that transformation in these two riverine societies and to ask how they took different paths, why, and what were the implications of that divergence. In asking these questions, particular attention will be paid to the significance of technological and institutional breakthroughs in the Dutch case, such as highly efficient windmills for pumping water, the mapping of cadastral surveys with triangulation, the centralization of power in the local water boards (heemraden), and the involvement of the financial market. In the Chinese case, we focus on the importance of the developing domestic market, the relationship between state and society in local water management, and the formation of unique local land reclamation organizations

The association of polypharmacy with functional decline in elderly patients undergoing cardiac surgery

Aims: Identifying preoperative risk factors in older patients becomes more important to reduce adverse functional outcome. This study investigated the association between preoperative medication use and functional decline in elderly cardiac surgery patients and compared polypharmacy as a preoperative screening tool to a clinical frailty assessment.Methods: This sub-study of the Anaesthesia Geriatric Evaluation study included 518 patients aged ≥70 years undergoing elective cardiac surgery. The primary outcome was functional decline, defined as a worse health-related quality of life or disability 1 year after surgery. The association between polypharmacy (i.e. ≥5 prescriptions and Results: Functional decline was reported in 284 patients (55%) and preoperative polypharmacy and excessive polypharmacy showed higher risks (adjusted relative risk 1.57, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23-1.98 and 1.93, 95% CI 1.48-2.50, respectively). Besides cardiovascular medication, proton-pump inhibitors and central nervous system medication were significantly associated with functional decline. Discrimination between models with polypharmacy or frailty was similar (area under the curve 0.67, 95% CI 0.61-0.72). The net reclassification index improved when including polypharmacy to the basic model (17%, 95% CI 0.06-0.27).Conclusion: Polypharmacy is associated with functional decline in elderly cardiac surgery patients. A preoperative medication review is easily performed and could be used as screening tool to identify patients at risk for adverse outcome after cardiac surgery.Pharmacolog

Private trade and monopoly structures : the East India Companies and the commodity trade to Europe in the eighteenth century

Our research is about the trade in material goods from Asia to Europe over this period, and its impact on Europe’s consumer and industrial cultures. It entails a comparative study of Europe’s East India Companies and the private trade from Asia over the period. The commodities trade was heavily dependent on private trade. The historiography to date has left a blind spot in this area, concentrating instead on corruption and malfeasance. Taking a global history approach we investigate the trade in specific consumer goods in many qualities and varieties that linked merchant communities and stimulated information flows. We set out how private trade functioned alongside and in connection with the various European East India companies; we investigate how this changed over time, how it drew on the Company infrastructure, and how it took the risks and developed new and niche markets for specific Asian commodities that the Companies could not sustain
