Optical spectroscopy of radio galaxies in the 7C Redshift Survey
We present optical spectroscopy of all 49 radio galaxies in the 7C-I and
7C-II regions of the 7C Redshift Survey (7CRS). The low-frequency (151 MHz)
selected 7CRS sample contains all sources with flux-densities S_151 > 0.5 Jy in
three regions of the sky; 7C-I and 7C-II were chosen to overlap with the 5C6
and 5C7 surveys respectively, and cover a total sky area of 0.013 sr. The
sample has been completely identified and spectroscopy of the quasars and
broad-lined radio galaxies has been presented in Willott et al. (1998). Only
seven of the radio galaxies do not have redshift determinations from the
spectroscopy, giving a redshift completeness for the sample of >90%. The median
redshift of the 7CRS is 1.1. We present a composite 0.2<z<0.8 7CRS radio galaxy
spectrum and investigate the strengths of the 4000 Angstrom breaks in these
radio galaxies. We find an anti-correlation between the 4000 Angstrom break
strength and emission line luminosity, indicating that departures from old
elliptical galaxy continuum shapes are most likely due to non-stellar emission

Measurement of the 6S-7S transition polarizablility in atomic cesium and an improved test of the standard model
The ratio of the off-diagonal hyperfine amplitude to the tensor transition
polarizability (Mhf/beta) for the 6S-7S transition in cesium has been measured.
The value of beta=27.024(43)(expt)(67)(theory)a_0^3 is then obtained using an
accurate semi-empirical value of Mhf. This is combined with a previous
measurement of parity nonconservation in atomic cesium and previous atomic
structure calculations to determine the value of the weak charge. The
uncertainties in the atomic structure calculations are updated (and reduced) in
light of new experimental tests. The result Q_W=-72.06(28)(expt) (34)(theory)
differs from the prediction of the standard model of elementary particle

Will spin-relaxation times in molecular magnets permit quantum information processing?
Using X-band pulsed electron spin resonance, we report the intrinsic
spin-lattice () and phase coherence () relaxation times in molecular
nanomagnets for the first time. In Cr heterometallic wheels, with = Ni
and Mn, phase coherence relaxation is dominated by the coupling of the electron
spin to protons within the molecule. In deuterated samples reaches 3
s at low temperatures, which is several orders of magnitude longer than
the duration of spin manipulations, satisfying a prerequisite for the

Radio galaxy evolution: what you can learn from a Brief Encounter
We describe the pitfalls encountered in deducing from classical double radio
source observables (luminosity, spectral index, redshift and linear size) the
essential nature of how these objects evolve. We discuss the key role played by
hotspots in governing the energy distribution of the lobes they feed, and
subsequent spectral evolution. We present images obtained using the new 74 MHz
receivers on the VLA and discuss constraints which these enforce on models of

Spatially resolved spectra of 3C galaxy nuclei
We present and discuss visible-wavelength long-slit spectra of four low
redshift 3C galaxies obtained with the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space
Telescope. The slit was aligned with near-nuclear jet-like structure seen in
HST images of the galaxies, to give unprecedented spatial resolution of the
galaxy inner regions. In 3C 135 and 3C 171, the spectra reveal clumpy emission
line structures that indicate outward motions of a few hundred km s
within a centrally illuminated and ionised biconical region. There may also be
some low-ionisation high-velocity material associated with 3C 135. In 3C 264
and 3C 78, the jets have blue featureless spectra consistent with their
proposed synchrotron origin. There is weak associated line emission in the
innermost part of the jets with mild outflow velocity. These jets are bright
and highly collimated only within a circumnuclear region of lower galaxy
luminosity, which is not dusty. We discuss the origins of these central regions

The Impact of Health on Labor Supply Near Retirement
Estimates of how health affects employment vary considerably. We assess how different methods and health measures impact estimates of the impact of health on employment using a unified framework for the US and England. We find that subjective and objective health measures, and subjective measures instrumented by objective measures produce similar estimates when using sufficiently rich objective measures. Moreover, a single health index can capture the relevant health variation for employment. Health deterioration explains up to 15% of the decline in employment between ages 50 and 70.
