Connections Between Fluvial To Shallow Marine Environments and Submarine Canyons: Implications For Sediment Transfer To Deep Water
The heads of submarine canyons represent a critical link in the transfer of sediment from terrestrial sources to deep basin sinks. Here we report data on grain size, bathymetry, and geochronology from twenty-five modern submarine canyons that suggest this link to be very sensitive to the distance between the canyon head and the shoreline, and, to a lesser extent, wave energy. These data show the width of this zone filters the caliber of sediment delivered into deep water, which has significant implications for understanding sediment budgets and the distribution of reservoir and seal facies
Berry-phase blockade in single-molecule magnets
We formulate the problem of electron transport through a single-molecule
magnet (SMM) in the Coulomb blockade regime taking into account topological
interference effects for the tunneling of the large spin of a SMM. The
interference originates from spin Berry phases associated with different
tunneling paths. We show that in the case of incoherent spin states it is
essential to place the SMM between oppositely spin-polarized source and drain
leads in order to detect the spin tunneling in the stationary current, which
exhibits topological zeros as a function of the transverse magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex 4, 4 EPS figure
Implementation of higher-order absorbing boundary conditions for the Einstein equations
We present an implementation of absorbing boundary conditions for the
Einstein equations based on the recent work of Buchman and Sarbach. In this
paper, we assume that spacetime may be linearized about Minkowski space close
to the outer boundary, which is taken to be a coordinate sphere. We reformulate
the boundary conditions as conditions on the gauge-invariant
Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli scalars. Higher-order radial derivatives are eliminated
by rewriting the boundary conditions as a system of ODEs for a set of auxiliary
variables intrinsic to the boundary. From these we construct boundary data for
a set of well-posed constraint-preserving boundary conditions for the Einstein
equations in a first-order generalized harmonic formulation. This construction
has direct applications to outer boundary conditions in simulations of isolated
systems (e.g., binary black holes) as well as to the problem of
Cauchy-perturbative matching. As a test problem for our numerical
implementation, we consider linearized multipolar gravitational waves in TT
gauge, with angular momentum numbers l=2 (Teukolsky waves), 3 and 4. We
demonstrate that the perfectly absorbing boundary condition B_L of order L=l
yields no spurious reflections to linear order in perturbation theory. This is
in contrast to the lower-order absorbing boundary conditions B_L with L<l,
which include the widely used freezing-Psi_0 boundary condition that imposes

I-Brane Inflow and Anomalous Couplings on D-Branes
We show that the anomalous couplings of -brane gauge and gravitational
fields to Ramond-Ramond tensor potentials can be deduced by a simple anomaly
inflow argument applied to intersecting -branes and use this to determine

Projected free energies for polydisperse phase equilibria
A `polydisperse' system has an infinite number of conserved densities. We
give a rational procedure for projecting its infinite-dimensional free energy
surface onto a subspace comprising a finite number of linear combinations of
densities (`moments'), in which the phase behavior is then found as usual. If
the excess free energy of the system depends only on the moments used, exact
cloud, shadow and spinodal curves result; two- and multi-phase regions are
approximate, but refinable indefinitely by adding extra moments. The approach
is computationally robust and gives new geometrical insights into the

Test of variables of attention (TOVA) as a predictor of early attention complaints, an antecedent to dementia
The goal of this study was to determine if impairments detected by the test of variables of attention (TOVA) may be used to predict early attention complaints and memory impairments accurately in a clinical setting. We performed a statistical analysis of outcomes in a patient population screened for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or attention complaints, processing errors as measured by TOVA and the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS-III) results. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) checklists, constructed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th Edition criteria, which were completed by patients at PATH Medical, revealed that 72.8% of the patients had more than one attention complaint out of a total of 16 complaints, and 41.5% had more than five complaints. For the 128 males with a significant number of ADD complaints, individuals whose scores were significantly deviant or borderline (SDB) on TOVA, had a significantly greater number of attention complaints compared with normals for omissions (P < 0.02), response time (P < 0.015), and variability (P < 0.005), but not commissions (P > 0.50). For males, the mean scores for auditory, visual, immediate, and working memory scores as measured by the WMS-III were significantly greater for normals versus SDBs on the TOVA subtest, ie, omission (P < 0.01) and response time (P < 0.05), but not variability or commissions. The means for auditory, visual, and immediate memory scores were significantly greater for normals versus SDBs for variability (P < 0.045) only. In females, the mean scores for visual and working memory scores were significantly greater for normals versus SDBs for omissions (P < 0.025). The number of SDB TOVA quarters was a significant predictor for “impaired” or “normal” group membership for visual memory (P < 0.015), but not for the other three WMS-III components. For males, the partial correlation between the number of attention complaints and the number of SDB TOVA quarters was also significant (r = 0.251, P < 0.005). For the 152 females with a significant number of attention complaints, no significant differences between SDBs and normals were observed (P > 0.15). This is the first report, to our knowledge, which provides evidence that TOVA is an accurate predictor of early attention complaints and memory impairments in a clinical setting. This finding is more robust for males than for females between the ages of 40 and 90 years
Spin Tunneling and Phonon-assisted Relaxation in Mn12-acetate
We present a comprehensive theory of the magnetization relaxation in a
Mn12-acetate crystal in the high-temperature regime (T>1 K), which is based on
phonon-assisted spin tunneling induced by quartic magnetic anisotropy and weak
transverse magnetic fields. The overall relaxation rate as function of the
longitudinal magnetic field is calculated and shown to agree well with
experimental data including all resonance peaks measured so far. The Lorentzian
shape of the resonances, which we obtain via a generalized master equation that
includes spin tunneling, is also in good agreement with recent data. We derive
a general formula for the tunnel splitting energy of these resonances. We show
that fourth-order diagonal terms in the Hamiltonian lead to satellite peaks. A
derivation of the effective linewidth of a resonance peak is given and shown to
agree well with experimental data. In addition, previously unknown spin-phonon
coupling constants are calculated explicitly. The values obtained for these
constants and for the sound velocity are also in good agreement with recent
data. We show that the spin relaxation in Mn12-acetate takes place via several
transition paths of comparable weight. These transition paths are expressed in
terms of intermediate relaxation times, which are calculated and which can be

Accounting for variability when resurrecting dormant propagules substantiates their use in eco-evolutionary studies
There has been a steady rise in the use of dormant propagules to study biotic responses to environmental change over time. This is particularly important for organisms that strongly mediate ecosystem processes, as changes in their traits over time can provide a unique snapshot into the structure and function of ecosystems from decades to millennia in the past. Understanding sources of bias and variation is a challenge in the field of resurrection ecology, including those that arise because often-used measurements like seed germination success are imperfect indicators of propagule viability. Using a Bayesian statistical framework, we evaluated sources of variability and tested for zero-inflation and overdispersion in data from 13 germination trials of soil-stored seeds of Schoenoplectus americanus, an ecosystem engineer in coastal salt marshes in the Chesapeake Bay. We hypothesized that these two model structures align with an ecological understanding of dormancy and revival: zero-inflation could arise due to failed germinations resulting from inviability or failed attempts to break dormancy, and overdispersion could arise by failing to measure important seed traits. A model that accounted for overdispersion, but not zero-inflation, was the best fit to our data. Tetrazolium viability tests corroborated this result: most seeds that failed to germinate did so because they were inviable, not because experimental methods failed to break their dormancy. Seed viability declined exponentially with seed age and was mediated by seed provenance and experimental conditions. Our results provide a framework for accounting for and explaining variability when estimating propagule viability from soil-stored natural archives which is a key aspect of using dormant propagules in eco-evolutionary studies
The effects of supplementing growing-finishing pig diets with carnitine and(or) chromium on growth and carcass characteristics
Eighty crossbred gilts (initially 83 lb) were used to examine the effects of 50 ppm carnitine and(or) 200 ppb chromium from chromium nicotinate on growth performance and carcass characteristics. In this trial, adding carnitine and(or) chromiunm to the diets of high-lean growth finishing gilts did not increase carcass leanness.
