A sum-product theorem in function fields

Let $A$ be a finite subset of \ffield, the field of Laurent series in $1/t$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We show that for any $\epsilon>0$ there exists a constant $C$ dependent only on $\epsilon$ and $q$ such that $\max\{|A+A|,|AA|\}\geq C |A|^{6/5-\epsilon}$. In particular such a result is obtained for the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. Identical results are also obtained for finite subsets of the $p$-adic field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for any prime $p$.Comment: Simplification of argument and note that methods also work for the p-adic

The Reality and Measurement of the Wavefunction

Using a simple version of the model for the quantum measurement of a two level system, the contention of Aharonov, Anandan, and Vaidman that one must in certain circumstances give the wavefunction an ontological as well as an epistemological significance is examined. I decide that their argument that the wave function of a system can be measured on a single system fails to establish the key point and that what they demonstrate is the ontological significance of certain operators in the theory, with the wave function playing its usual epistemological role.Comment: 10p

Marriage Patterns in the United States

This paper analyzes cohort marriage patterns in the United States in order to determine whether declining rates of first marriage are due to changes in the timing of marriage, the incidence of marriage, or both. Parametric models, which are well-suited to the analysis of censored or truncated data, are fit separately to information on age at first marriage derived from three data sets which were collected independently and at different points in time. Extended versions of the models are also estimated in which the parameters of the model distributions are allowed to depend on social and, economic variables.The results provide evidence that the incidence of first marriage is declining and that there is only a slight tendency for women to delay marriage. In addition, education is the most important correlate of decisions about the timing of first marriage whereas race is the most important correlate of decisions about its incidence.

Commitment and the Modern Union: Assessing the Link Between Premarital Cohabitation and Subsequent Marital Stability

In recent years, the incidence of premarital cohabitation has increased dramatically in many countries of Western Europe and in the United States. As cohabitation becomes a more common experience, it is increasingly important to understand the links between cohabitation and other steps in the process of family formation and dissolution. We focus on the relationship between pre- marital cohabitation and subsequent marital stability, and analyze data from the 1981 Women in Sweden survey using a hazards model approach. Our results indicate that women who premaritally cohabit have almost 80 percent higher marital dissolution rates than those who do not cohabit. Women who cohabit for over three years prior to marriage have over 50 percent higher dissolution rates than women who cohabit for shorter durations. Last, cohabitors and non-cohabitors whose marriages have remained intact for eight years appear to have identical dissolution rates after that time. In addition, we provide evidence that strongly suggests a weaker commitment, on the part of those who cohabit premaritally, to the institution of marriage.

Deposition of general ellipsoidal particles

We present a systematic overview of granular deposits composed of ellipsoidal particles with different particle shapes and size polydispersities. We study the density and anisotropy of such deposits as functions of size polydispersity and two shape parameters that fully describe the shape of a general ellipsoid. Our results show that, while shape influences significantly the macroscopic properties of the deposits, polydispersity plays apparently a secondary role. The density attains a maximum for a particular family of non-symmetrical ellipsoids, larger than the density observed for prolate or oblate ellipsoids. As for anisotropy measures, the contact forces show are increasingly preferred along the vertical direction as the shape of the particles deviates for a sphere. The deposits are constructed by means of an efficient molecular dynamics method, where the contact forces are efficiently and accurately computed. The main results are discussed in the light of applications for porous media models and sedimentation processes.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
